Javascript is becoming an increasingly important tool for websites.

Elsewhere on the blog this week we covered the launch of Ghost, a blogging platform built in Javascript. Even large features on WordPress and other CMSs are being rebuilt in Javascript.

Our latest course is an introduction to Javascript.

Day 1 Review of the Ghost Blogging Platform

We've covered Ghost before on this site.

Ghost is designed to be nothing but a blog. It was built to be a simpler, lightweight alternative to WordPress.

A month ago, the first version of Ghost launched to people who had sponsored the project's development on Github.

Today, Ghost was released to the public. In this review, I'm going to download and test Ghost for the first time.

How We Wrote the Best-Selling Drupal Book

We've been fortunate over the last couple of years to have great success with our CMS books.

Drupal 7 Explained launched in May and over the last few months it has become the best-selling Drupal book.

That book was the follow-up to Joomla! Explained which has been the best-selling Joomla book for over 2 years now.

How did we do it? Workflows.

We've taught hundreds of live classes over the last few years and based on student feedback, workflows are by the fast most popular teaching tool we've used.

Here's an introduction to how they help us teach and how they can help you too.

The Police Are Better at Copywriting Than You

A seemingly insignificant story in the news made an unusually profound impact on me.  This is what I learned.
My days begin by perusing newspapers and online resources to feed my addiction to current events.  Local, state, regional, national, international, human interest, technology … it doesn’t matter.  I’ll read almost anything.
That’s how I came across the standard details of a common police operation that were run together in a story written by a nameless person whose mind was probably wandering onto his or her next story before lunch.

Remove Extra jQuery files in Joomla With ReReplacer

If you have a Joomla site with many extensions and a sophisticated template, you may find yourself with a common problem: too many Javascript files.

It's not unusual for various templates and extensions to load their own libraries or even two different version of the same library.

The impact of this problem is that either the template or the extension may cease to work properly.

One solution is the jQuery Easy plugin. However, you can also solve this issue with Rereplacer by NoNumber. Both of the solutions will allow you fix duplicate Javascript problems without modifying any code.

In this course, Rod provides an introduction to the complex theming process for Drupal.

We'll take you step-by-step through the basics of Drupal themes.

You'll see how to download and configure contributed themes, build your own and using "starter" or "base" themes as a launching point.

This week we release the first 12 video. The complete class will end up being around 35 videos.

Did Open Source Software Bring Down Healthcare.gov?

No, almost certainly not.

A lot of news articles about Healthcare.gov have mentioned Jekyll, a open source tool for generating database-free websites.

I've asked around people who know Jekyll well and the consensus is that the problems lie elsewhere.

Are Jekyll and Static Site Generators Easier to Use?

While researching my article on Healthcare.gov, I had the chance dig deeper into the open source technology behind the site.

I test Jekyll, which created most of the pages for the site. Jekyll creates "flat sites" that don't use a database.

Easily Test Joomla 3 Patches

Joomla 3.2 is coming soon and it's time for developers to start testing.

The Joomla team say that, "the amount of contributions for this release is amazingly high and we are most likely looking at the largest release of the CMS ever."

To make testing the change much easier, the Joomla team have released a component called "Patch Tester".
