A Presidential Anniversary

On September 15th, 1794, James Madison married my favorite first lady, Dolley Payne Todd (Madison.)  The History Channel has described Dolley as "vivacious", "voluptuous", AND "robust", which is quite the trifecta of adjectives.  Most people remember Dolley Madison because she smuggled a really big painting of George Washington out of the White House to save it from the British during the War of 1812.  She loved turbans and parties, and also her husband, even though he sounds k...

Bloody Ban's Birthday

There are times when a name will reach out and grab you, and when I saw "Bloody Ban Tarleton" on This Day in History, I had to click to read more.  The only Tartletons I knew were these two tall drinks of ginger water from Gone With the Wind.

not these Tarletons
But today in 1754, Banastre Tarleton (BANASTRE. TARLETON.) was born in London.  Baby Banastre would grow up to be known as Bloody Ban Tarleton, the most brutal British officer in the American Revolution.  Bloo...

Fashion Friday: My Favorite Frock

"Matronly," says one reviewer.  "Just right," says me.  Here is an ode to my favorite frock of 2015 (so far!), which is currently on sale at Boden USA.

If you aspire to look like a slightly more grown-up Kit Kittredge: an American Girl, or perhaps a lost Pevensie sister, this is the dress for you.

Side Note: Kit Kittredge's tag line is "it sure is fun to solve problems!"  No wonder the American Girls of yesteryear can't compete with the American Girls of tod...

Amelia Earhart: Cosmo Girl

Every month is Women's History Month here on the blog, but since March is technically/officially Women's History Month, I wanted to pay tribute to one of my childhood heroes (or shall I...sheroes?), Amelia Earhart.  I had Amelia Earhart on the brain because the Smithsonian website has put up a 3D simulator of Earhart's flight suit and it's awesome.  Check it out!

You've looked at the flannel-lined pockets, yes?  Ok.&...

Madam C.J. Walker

Today's featured woman for Black History Month is Madam C.J. Walker, amazing entrepreneur, brilliant businesswoman, and hair care genius.
Madam C.J. WalkerWalker was born Sarah Breedlove in 1867.  She grew up in poverty in rural Louisiana, and supported herself by picking cotton and washing laundry.  She saved her money and moved to St. Louis to live with her brothers, who were popular barbers.

In the 1890s, a scalp condition caused Walker to lose most of her hair.  She st...
