The Years Behind the Wheel
The Trucker hoisted himself up to view out the driver's side door window, wiping stubborn sleep from his eyes. A fresh-faced blonde, no more than 17, winked back and rattled the door handle again. His watch glowed two a.m. He returned to his bunk, pulling the curtain behind, and cursed his advanced age.

Misunderstanding
When the paramedics arrived to the scene, both were pronounced dead.
"You promised to be with us and protect us all the time", they told God, when He gave them audience.
"Yes, but once you hit 75 and climbing, I stepped off the vehicle."
Josue Santiago.

Freedom, Pennsylvania
My husband drove tight-lipped off the Lincoln Way West pulling the camper into the Sunrise Cafe.
"Out for dinner. I'm checking the stabilizing bars again. We're surging."
Kayla fought Tyler for the twenty. The dog heaved as the doors closed behind the kids. Looking at me across the hood, he said, "Let's go."

At the School Gates
She's late, again. Where is she? I'll sit and read my book and wait. Everyone else has gone, and it's getting dark. Where is she? A cat wanders past. I cant concentrate on my book. Where is she? My phone rings. And everything changes. She's not coming. She's never coming. She didn't see it coming.

The Wrong Right Way
"Turn left," I told Ema.
"No. It says here, go right."
"I've been there 15 times. You turn left here."
"You are wrong."
"Ema, I'd say suit yourself, but we'd end up god knows where, so turn left."
Ema turned left and turns out to be right. Left was a road to nowhere.

The Lonely Road
As he passed along the moving traffic, you would think that he would be scared. No, he did not take any notice of it. He went along his daily routine as he always did.
"Mammy what's that going by the gate?"
"Oh, thats just his spirit making his way home on the lonely road to nowhere".

Prey
He'd lurked in the culvert for hours in the desert heat. Monitoring traffic. Waiting.
Finally, a lone sedan trundled up the road, hugging the center line.
He crawled up the embankment, fixing a look of vulnerable desperation on his face.
The motorist would stop.
There would be blood.
He licked his lips in hungry anticipation.

Galloping Towards Forever
Top down and 80 miles an hour outside of Vegas, John and Mary Henderson's tuxedo and wedding dress whipped in the wind. A unique honeymoon indeed, having long ago developed intimate knowledge of one another, something new was needed for the honeymoon. Mary had suggested a threesome and the Mustang ranch was an hour away.

September Flash Fiction Winners
Hi all, it's time to announce our September winners. What a month is was, with many high quality entries.
As I announced earlier, the judge this month was Emily Suess from Suess's Pieces. You want to check her site out. I love the sarcastic humor in her posts, she runs interesting writing contests, and dishes out tons of useful advice.
The September prompt was "A Child Within", and here are our winners. Congratulations!
# 1: Overall Winner is Mark Brown with his powerful story Teacher's Pet.
# 2: Strongest Emotion is Antonio Angelo with his fantastic last-minute entry There's no Child Within Danny Taylor.
# 3: Best Imagery is Christopher Bunn with his superb Some Assembly Required.
Judging the entries of such quality is heart-breaking. I'm infinitely grateful to Emily that she took over this month.
I'll contact each winner by email to wire the winnings: $55 for the first prize and $30 each for prizes # 2 and 3.
I'm truly, truly grateful to all authors and readers who stopped by to vote. Many thanks to all, and let's begin our October contest!
The prompt for October is:
What Happens on the Road
Happy flash-writing!
Austin.
