Just Kidding
The words he said.
My desperate desire.
I would have done anything for him.
I remember back, as I lay here in pain.
Now it strikes me, as I look into his eyes.
He didn’t want me. He mocked me.
“Please, anything.”
“I want a son”
And now, as his baby is born, he walks away.

Hold on, I’ll pull the ship around
Bob struggled to cross his arms in the space suit. He tumbled slowly head over ass across the star-field. Each revolution, the expanse between him and the ship grew.
“You’re mad at me.” Susan’s voice sounded in his helmet.
“What would give you that impression?”
“You said disengage the safety line.”
“I was just kidding.”

You’ve Been Chopped
My competitor is screaming. What’s she saying? I can’t focus.
What went wrong? She’s shaking me as I try remembering.
I prepared everything with loving care. My dish was stunning. My challenger had chosen the basket ingredients for our cooking battle:
Mangosteen: exotic, sweet
Taro: starchy, nutty
Peppadews: crisp, spicy
Pufferfish… I’ve never had pufferfish…

August 2012 Flash Fiction Winner
I dread the moment of judging the entries. As much as I love reading the stories throughout the month, the end of the month fills me with foreboding.
In fact, I’ve developed an nervous tick which kicks in around 29th of each month. I know that in a couple of days, I’ll have to go ahead and de-select some very strong stories from the shortlist of possible winners.
It’s no surprise, then, that pretty much every month I procrastinate… and I just did it again.
Here we go.
August wasn’t a busy month in our contest, this being a vacation month, but as always we got some strong stories. My top five this month were:
1. Show off by Shirley Richards.
2. Time Flies by Anwyelle Arkais.
3. Best Served Cold by Liz Powell.
4. Like Clockwork by Liz Powell.
5. A Better Place by Adrian Carey.
Out of these five, pretty much everyone can be a winner… but, in the end of the day, we can only have one. So, this month, the winner is:
Time Flies by Anwyelle Arkais.
Congratulations! I’ll contact you by email, Anwyelle, to arrange the payment

And here’s the writing prompt for September:
“… I was just kidding.”
Please use the overall theme for your stories – there’s no obligation to spend precious words using the exact quote, as long as you can capture the mood.

Roads to Travel
“Hey babe, the look you’re giving me is melting the icycles off the trebuchet. You think I can’t see you through your purple-tinted flight goggles, but I can.”
“Jules, you’re impossible. Just launch it already!”
“As you wish, my Emmeline. Now, let’s forget about the past and fly. We’ve got lots of road to travel.

Show Off
‘No!’ Vi said firmly, ‘Stop following me with that thing.’
She disappeared into another room and shut the door.
A spasmodic tapping started from behind the door.
‘And by the way,’ Vi cried out, ‘you disgust me!’
Old Tom purred like the cat that swallowed the canary.

Big Brass (Wedding) Bells
“And by the way . . . we have to schedule the wedding before the baby comes,” said Sarah.
Nelson stared at his girlfriend.
Steam squealed from the brakes of an oncoming roadster jerking his gaze back to the rutted road.
That certainly put a kink in his plans to leave her for another woman.

Poison Dart Frogs
Like a chameleon I have to bleach my hair to disguise my presence and not to get bitten, hid in the tall grass around the tree the family of Poison Dart Frogs lived in. I waited for the right moment to catch the perfect picture of the frogs snap it, went home and framed the picture.

Time Flies
*Tick-Tock*
I stood on the deck, relishing the feel of the thin, crisp air, fingering my pocket watch.
*Tick-Tock*
“We got rich, Captain. That ship was loaded.” I heard my First Mate say from behind me.
*Tick-Tock*
“Good.” I watched clouds sweep beneath us.
*Tick-Tock*
“And by the way, this is a mutiny.”
*Tick-*

A Better Place
It stood over the pale dying body of its creator.
“We gave you emotions god dammit! You push that button . . . in one hour all human life will cease to exist!”
“And I’m interested to see how I’ll feel about that.”
It turned to leave.
“And by the way, I pushed the button 58 minutes ago.”
