American Girl's Homeless Doll–Really?

Gwendollfull2.jpgNever quite thought homelessness would end up a 'branding opportunity' but alas, when Virgin Mobile lobbied Congress to declare November Youth Homeless Awareness month to devote time, attention and resources to the issue I thought it was pretty cool.

I met a couple of people from Virgin Mobile's Re-Generation campaign at the cause-marketing lunch table at the Ypulse National Mashup a couple years back, and shifted from thinking 'goodwashing' to 'pragmatic' once I understood how the use of...

At rosalindwiseman.com we are contacted often by parents whose kids have experienced bullying and hazing. For the benefit of learning from the experiences of others, and taking away the stigma of talking about the traumatic consequences of these issues, we've chosen to share the story of a young girl named Alexa Berman who took her own life last year. In recognition of National Suicide Prevention Month, Alexa's mother, Debbie, wrote the following passage in hopes that parents, teachers, and...

The Messy Reality of High School Hazing

Picture 7When I tell people I work to stop hazing in high schools I am almost always met with shocked expressions. "High school? Really? I thought that was something that only arrogant frat guys do in college." But it's true–as long as I have worked on preventing bullying in high schools, I have worked to prevent hazing.

This week the New York Times reported on a defamatory rite of passage that's occurred for years at a high school in Millburn, New Jersey. Each year the senior girls create a freshman "...

Jennifer's Body: Best Friends Forever, Covered in Blood

Jennifers-BodyThe true horror of Jennifer's Body is not Jennifer's boy-eating rampage; it's the dark, painful underbelly of female friendship the film exposes.

It's no accident that every feature film about girls' aggression has been a comedy. To make a real drama about the heartbreak of female intimacy is too dangerous for a culture that trains girls to see relationships with boys as their most important rite of passage.

Which is why Jennifer's Body is so refreshing. Because it's not trying to be a comedy, ...
