Book Review : Brian Alan Ellis - Failure Pie in a Sadness Face (2017)

Book Review : Brian Alan Ellis - Failure Pie in a Sadness Face (2017):

“If pop culture is the connective tissue of a society raised on mass media, the world of Brian Alan Ellis is a forgotten subterranean kingdom that lies under a metropolitan city. It’s filled with wonders from the past and problems from the present. Ellis’ books are becoming can’t miss literature for me. I enjoy his work because it shows a playful self-awareness that’s hard to find in the age of social media [and] what makes [him] more interesting than [your] run-of-the-mill white guy writing about his life is that he doesn’t try to draw a greater meaning from it. He doesn’t see a potential to live up to and doesn’t feel entitled to a better situation.”

Benoit Lelievre gives a thoughtful review of my latest story collection, FAILURE PIE IN A SADNESS FACE, over at Dead End Follies

YOU CAN CATCH SADNESS AND DEATH LIKE A FEVER: An Interview with Scott McClanahan

YOU CAN CATCH SADNESS AND DEATH LIKE A FEVER: An Interview with Scott McClanahan:

clash-official:

Brian Alan Ellis

Scott McClanahan is an award-winning author from West Virginia best known for writing several autobiographical stories and novels, the most recent of which (The Sarah Book, out this month from Tyrant Books; Talking Book is doing the audio version) chronicles the unraveling of his previous marriage in devastatingly kinetic albeit humorous fashion. McClanahan also makes documentary films. He even recorded a folk/country single for Fat Possum Records, and has collaborated with artist Ricardo Cavolo on a graphic novel about Daniel Johnston, a singer/songwriter/artist struggling with mental illness. The dude also digs soap operas and has had guns pulled on him.

YOU AND I WILL ONE DAY FEEL THE JOY OF DESTROYING AN ENTIRE BATHROOM WITH OUR BARE HANDS: An Interview with Benjamin DeVos

YOU AND I WILL ONE DAY FEEL THE JOY OF DESTROYING AN ENTIRE BATHROOM WITH OUR BARE HANDS: An Interview with Benjamin DeVos:

clash-official:

Brian Alan Ellis: The protagonist in your latest book, Lord of the Game, smashes up the bathroom of the bar he works at, and there’s a whole scene where the boss tries getting him to admit to smashing up the bathroom, even pulling a gun on him at one point, and it’s beautiful. Have you ever smashed up a bathroom IRL?

Benjamin DeVos: The closest I’ve gotten was when I tripped in my buddy’s bathroom and accidentally cracked his toilet seat. I was pretty drunk and probably could have caught myself, but thought that drilling my elbow into the toilet to break my fall would be more fun. It left a bruise that I couldn’t figure out how I got until a day or so later. Proud moment.
