Today's featured book is COUNT TO A TRILLION,a very cool postmodern space opera (or so I've dubbed it) by John C. Wrightand I'm giving away a copy, so read on...
Everygeneration has its own space-opera fixation. I grew up watching "Star Trek"(the OLD one), then moved on to "Star Wars" (the first couple or three movies, then I gotover it). They're full of noble galactic warriors who live and work acrossfar-flung galaxies. Their heroes aren't madmen who've had their sanity restored, been...

Seems like from the beginning, the Six Flags amusement park in New Orleans East was doomed. It opened in 2000 under the name "Jazzland," and never took off. In 2002, the Six Flags people took it over and it limped along for three years. I mean, if people are coming to New Orleans to visit, do they really want to spend time at a New Orleans-themed amusement park more than a half-hour's dri...

From the Royal Street Photo Album: Irony
In Royal Street, DJ slips back into New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina to find a strange sight on the sidewalk in front of her house: a waterlogged copy of the Times-Picayune from the day before the hurricane made landfall--the last printed copy of the Times-Pic that was delivered for quite a while.
This is one instance in which I did use my own experiences in the book. When I returned to New Orleans for the first time after the storm, I found this at the bottom of the steps leading into my h...
