Memories of One Cornish Summer from Lisa Hill

To celebrate the paperback publication of One Cornish Summer Lisa Hill tells us about her Cornish holiday…

‘I had so many photos I could have chosen, I have a wonderful photo of me, my mum, my boys and my late dad at Goonhilly from exactly ten years ago. It was the last holiday we had together in Cornwall and very special to me but it wasn’t very Cornwall-esque so I discounted it. In recent years, I have very many special memories of Port Isaac, which is my favourite destination in Cornwall, as I am a huge Doc Martin fan and two of our favourite Michelin Star restaurants are there, both owned by Nathan Outlaw. Cornwall is synonymous with food for my husband and I, so the photo I’ve chose is actually from a meal in the Golden Lion in Port Isaac. The reason I’ve chosen it is that it is the opposite view to the cover of Liz’s novel. Perhaps a hero, looking out to the heroine on the cover? It seemed appropriate to me.’

My novel, Heart in the Right Place is available for preorder on Amazon with Manatee Books and is released on 26th July 2018

Lottie Hardwicke is Yorkshire’s answer to Kirstie Allsopp, but ten years spent raising her three children with husband, Drew, has relegated her to Saturday Girl status at the family estate agents. This is Lottie’s year; she’s turning over a new leaf and is going to make her time in property less of a borderline obsession and more of an actual career. Only, she hasn’t bet on her interfering in-laws returning to scupper her plans or her teenage crush, celebrity Tom Thorpe, arriving in the village and offering her the opportunity of a lifetime, which could compromise everything…

Can Lottie have it all? Can she be a hands-on mum and get her career back, without wrecking her marriage in the process?

Memories of One Cornish Summer from June Moonbridge

To celebrate the paperback publication of One Cornish Summer June Moonbridge tells us about her Cornish holiday…

My Cornish vacation happened in 2011. It was myfamily’s first road trip across the UK. Since then we made one more and we are halfway returning in two weeks too. You see (if you don’t know it already) I’m not from the UK, however I always wished to visit one special place in Cornwall.

Land’s End.

The place where England starts and ends at the same time. Visiting it was something I had wished for a long, long time. In my teenage years I was a sucker for historical romance novels and if they were not set in Cornwall, most of them mentioned it. Land’s End was the ‘point of no return’ as it may be said. This place had been seen last when men (and women) sailed to America. A perfect view on the Atlantic Ocean.

I read (I confess I can’t remember where) that when the ships sailed to the West – the guy who sat in the basket on the mast called to the sailboat’s Captain: “Land’s End!” (By the way; that was before the GPS…) and when the captain and the crew heard that, they had known that for days, weeks, there is nothing ahead of them, but the ocean.

I remember that on the day scheduled for a trip to Land’s End, a heavy rain caught us on the road. Mile after mile I was wondering if that had been the best idea and the best day to visit it. But on the other hand, that was the only day possible to take the trip.

From Exeter, where we stayed to Land’s End is around 220 KM and because we didn’t take the fastest route possible it took us almost 4 hours – together including lunch.

When we arrived at Helston, where I hope and believe (but maybe I’m wrong) part of my favourite book, by Elisabeth Gaskell: North & South, take place, the rain stopped and the sun looked out of the clouds very shyly. I was very pleased.

At Land’s End we walked around for almost two hours although it was windy. You can make quite a tour if the weather is fine – and you don’t have two ‘tired’ children with you.

As we decided to go back, the minute we sat back in to our car, the rain started to fall again. Maybe my children had the sixth sense after me after all?!

So, that was my memorable Cornish holiday, however short it was. I know one day, I’ll be back again.

Joshua’s life as a rock guitarist seems like a dream come true. Sold out concerts, red carpet events and wild nights portray him as a confident young man with the world at his feet. Only few friends know the scars he carries.

When freelance photographer Caroline meets the rock band Burning Ruins at the after party, irresistible chemistry of attraction between sexy rock guitarist and her is clearly seen to everybody. However, after forced conversation from Joshua’s side, Caroline’s convinced the attraction is not mutual.

Waking up next morning, Caroline has no idea what happened. She flees out of the hotel room mortified, convinced she’d become another of the band’s trophies. Determined never to meet anyone from Burning Ruins ever again, she has no clue people around her have different ideas.

In a summer that takes them from London to Wales and to the sultry heat of Rome, they’re desperately fighting their demons from the past, while trying to protect their broken hearts. Will they ever let each other mend their broken hearts or will they try to heal them alone?

Cornish Summer Memories from Carol Thomas

To celebrate the paperback publication of One Cornish Summer Carol Thomas tells us about her Cornish holiday…

In the early 2000s, my husband raced Zapcat powerboats with a friend. As a result, we got to follow him around the country having lots of lovely beach holidays. One of our favourite destinations was Watergate Bay, in Cornwall. With a good stretch of sand to play on with our then two-year-old daughter, rugged cliffs and dramatic coastal landscape; it was an ideal setting for a holiday, as well as the racing.

The surf was frequently as dramatic as the landscape with waves reaching ten foot and beyond. As the photographs show, the racing didn’t always go to plan. That’s my husband upside down having come out of the boat! Luckily, he was unharmed, but it certainly made our 2006 trip a holiday to remember.

Carol’s latest book…

Introducing Lisa Blake, the purrfect pet sitter!

When Lisa Blake’s life in London falls apart, she returns to her hometown rebranding herself as ‘the purrfect pet sitter’ – which may or may not be false advertising!

But being back where she grew up, Lisa can’t escape her past. There’s her estranged best friend Flick who she bumps into in an embarrassing encounter in a local supermarket. And her first love, Nathan Baker, who, considering their history, is sure to be even more surprised by her drunken Facebook friend request than Lisa is.

As she becomes involved in the lives of her old friends Lisa must confront the hurt she has caused, discover the truth about her mysterious leather-clad admirer, and learn how to move forward when the things she wants most are affected by the decisions of her past.

Memories of One Cornish Summer from Georgie Capron

To celebrate the paperback publication of One Cornish Summer Georgie Capron tells us about her Cornish holiday…

This is a photograph I took of Lundy Bay in North Cornwall, one of my favourite places. I have been coming to Cornwall every year since I was two years old- it is my happy place and I feel it calling me back each summer. There is nowhere like it! It truly is magical. The rugged coastline, the golden sandy beaches, the everchanging weather, body boarding on the waves, the Cornish  pasties, looking for cowrie shells (one of my favourite things to do!) I could go on and on. My first book, Just the Two of Us, was partly set in Cornwall and I feel inspired to write every time I visit. It is, quite simply, heaven on earth!

Georgie’s latest book…

Happy children, happy husband, happily ever after?Tasha knows that she should count her blessings: married for eleven years, mother to three healthy children, she should be content with her lot. However, feelings of frustration have settled over her like a dark cloud. Despite living under the same roof and sharing the same bed, Tasha has never felt so distant from her husband, Charlie. She feels worn down by the mental load of motherhood, drowning in the never-ending chores that keep the family and household afloat. Most of all she worries that her once happy marriage is slipping away from her.

Tasha longs for something to change, but when change comes calling will it really be the answer she was hoping for? And is it possible to fall in love with the same person twice?

A modern day love story about family, marriage and risking it all to have it all.

Cornish Summer Memories from Sam Blake

To celebrate the paperback publication of One Cornish Summer Sam Blake tells us about her Cornish holiday…

My Cornish Summer

It is the perfect summer evening on the Helford River. A stone’s throw from the sea, boats bob in the still balmy heat and laughter rises from The Ferry Boat Inn, possibly the most perfectly situated pub in the world. We’re on our annual three week break in Coast Guard Cottages, Helford Passage, as close to heaven as you can get, especially this summer with its 80 degree temperatures. My kids have their wetsuits on and are diving off the Helford Ferry pontoon in the dark – the ferry has been crossing this river for over a thousand years.  A guy has just come out of the Ferry Boat Inn, crossing the tiny beach in front of our cottage to his kayak and two waiting black labs. He’s pulled off his t-shirt and climbing in, both dogs jump on board, and a moment later he’s slipping off down river.

Cornwall is a peninsula that basks in the warmth of the gulf stream, it’s tropical beautiful and a magnet for creatives, including my sister who came to live here over twenty years ago and is Director of the Cornwall Film Festival.

I’ve always written, but for me this is one of the best places to get ideas and to write – while everyone else is busy chatting to their friends (we’ve been coming here for about fifteen years), swimming or sailing, I get to spend time with my characters.  My favourite book of all time is Rebeccaby Daphne du Maurier. It is one of the most sophisticated psychological thrillers ever written, and I’ve discovered, on the shelf of every female writer I know. Before domestic noir was a thing, du Maurier took us, and the new Mrs de Winter, to Manderley in Cornwall, to a house steeped in its ever present but deceased, mistress Rebecca. Multi layered, Rebecca a thriller and a romance and has twists that make it utterly unforgettable. I collect first editions, and have at least six copies of Rebecca including the beautiful new editions that came out this year for its 80th anniversary. Our white washed cottage sits right above the water and is only about five minutes by boat from Frenchman’s Creek.

To me, whatever the weather, every Cornish summer is perfect.

About No Turning Back

Even perfect families have secrets . . .

Orla and Conor Quinn are the perfect power couple: smart, successful and glamorous. But then the unthinkable happens. Their only son, Tom, is the victim of a deliberate hit-and-run.

Detective Garda Cathy Connolly has just left Tom’s parents when she is called to the discovery of another body, this time in Dillon’s Park, not far from where Tom Quinn was found. What led shy student Lauren O’Reilly to apparently take her own life? She was a friend of Tom’s and they both died on the same night – are their deaths connected and if so, how?

As Cathy delves deeper, she uncovers links to the Dark Web and a catalogue of cold cases, realising that those involved each have their own reasons for hiding things from the police. But events are about to get a lot more frightening . . .

Memories of One Cornish Summer from Heidi Rice

To celebrate the paperback publication of One Cornish Summer Heidi Rice tells us about her Cornish holiday…

After many Cornish camping summers as a kid, my Mum and I returned there a couple of years ago in her campervan for a long weekend at a campsite on the Roseland Peninsula near the pretty fishing village of Portscatho. This meant, pub visits, a swim or two in the sea, lots of long walks along the cliff path, a paella cooked by the guys at the Hidden Hut (top beach restaurant for those not in the know) and some hilarious nights getting giggly by the campfire after way too much wine. Only disappointment, we didn’t spot Poldark (apparently it was filmed near there)! Maybe next time…

Is home always where the heart is?

When Ellie spent a summer with her mum on a Wiltshire commune in the 90s it was a bigger disaster than Leo DiCaprio’s trip aboard the Titanic – so fleeing to America seemed like the perfect back-up plan.

But now, with her marriage falling apart, running back to her mum seems like the only option for her and her son Josh.

She wasn’t expecting Art, the boy she once had a crush on, to still be working at Willow Tree Farm… And for him to still be as hot and bothersome as he was when they were teenagers.

Ellie came to Willow Tree Farm for a fresh start. But is she ready to risk sailing her life – and her heart – into another iceberg?

One Cornish Summer is out

When I began writing books set in Cornwall, so many people told me of glorious holidays they had had in the Duchy over the years. Their faces would light up with the joy of the memory. Our memories are so much a part of us…the good and the bad. One Cornish Summer tackles both…

One Cornish Summer

Against the beauty of Cornwall, a story of two women struggling with their past: one cannot remember hers, the other cannot forget…

When Hebe receives a life-changing diagnosis at only 53, she struggles to make sense of what it will mean for her, her job and the man she loves. With memories slipping away by the day, she flees to the one place she has always felt safe and peaceful – Cornwall, and the house her family spent so many summers in.

Lucy is having her own crisis, and seizes the chance to follow her aunt to Cornwall. Curious about what has driven Hebe there after so many years, she also has to battle with the secret she has kept since her family’s last summer there more than ten years ago.

Both women will learn that memories live in our hearts and that sharing secrets can set you free… But can they find their way back to the things that are truly important to them?

To celebrate the release of the paperback I’ve asked author friends to share their Cornish summer memories.

A Cornish Christmas

A Cornish Christmas Carol is a festive delight to enjoy with a hot cup of mulled wine, perfect for fans of Jenny Colgan and Karen Swan.

Joy to the world? Not if Abigail Scorrier has anything to do with it. She’s spent most of her adult life trying to avoid the festive frenzy. She loved Christmas as a child in Cornwall: the colourful stockings hanging above a crackling fire, the excitement of what will be waiting for her the next morning. But ever since her life took a heart-breaking turn, she’s buried those memories and done everything she can to avoid her past, her family and most of all, the Christmas season.

But on Christmas Eve, Abigail will have three visitors she can’t ignore, and what they reveal about her past, present and future might just change her life – and mend her heart…

Your favourite authors love A Cornish Christmas Carol!

‘Lock yourself in, break out the mulled wine and mince pies and fall into this lovely Christmas story’ Milly Johnson

‘A magical, heartrending take on A Christmas Carol. I loved it!’ Julia Williams

‘This heart-warming festive tale is about the true meaning of Christmas: loved ones, family and coming home’ Cathy Bramley

‘Both heart-warming and poignant, a wonderful tale about the power of Christmas, and all that it means’ Fiona Harper

‘A moving Christmas story about love and redemption that would melt even Scrooge’s heart’ Phillipa Ashley
