In this video Dr. Chuck interviews author Heather Carter and they discuss what it means to be a reflection of God’s light despite our inadequacies.

I’m here with Heather Carter, heathercarterwrites.com. She’s an author, speaker. Heather, how are you? So good to have you on the show, I want to ask you a couple of things. One of your blog posts that I thought it was very interesting at your website was about Thomas Kinkade. I didn’t know that Thomas Kinkade actually had, you know, some drug and alcohol addictions. It’s interesting that somebody that’s such a great painter of light, like all of us, you know, has his challenges, but I loved your blog. You were talking about being a light and what that means in our lives. You know, what does it mean to let our light shine and kind of continue to plug into God as the source? Heather Carter: Yeah, well, I think that, you know, in reading Thomas Kinkade. I’ve been reading this book of his for 10 or more years probably, the Advent Book of Thomas Kinkade, and one of the things he talks about is he tries to paint pictures and he’s the painter of light. So, he’s always trying to add light to an otherwise dark canvas and he adds light at the very end of the time. So, I kind of see our lives are like that. You know we’re kind of all dark canvas, messed up, dull colors, but that when God adds his special touch to us, that anybody can shine. And that’s the important piece for me, is that I start to give down on myself, especially as an author and speaker. I think, you know, the voices in my head start saying: “who are you to do any of this? Who do you think-“ Dr. Chuck: “You’re inadequate?” Heather Carter: Yeah, “you’re just a mess.” And the best thing for me to do is say, is agree and say, “yes I am.” Dr. Chuck: Well, Heather, it’s good to know that I’m not the only person on the planet that feels that way, but don’t you think it inadequacy is a pretty good place to start? I loved your blog where you’re talking about, you now, how lights can be made just out of almost anything. You know, boots and coffee, coffee makers and all kinds of stuff. So, give us a little bit about your spoonful of courage that you would tell folks about: how do we learn to accept our inadequacy and see the benefits of our inadequacy? Heather Carter: Well, I think reminding ourselves of what we’ve learned and what, you know, most people, even if they don’t read the Bible regularly, know the story of many of the Bible characters. And they were, they were also a hot mess. You know, David murdered someone, he had an affair with Bathsheba, and then he had her husband killed. I mean, I haven’t done any of those things. Dr. Chuck: He was a rascal. Heather Carter: David has, you know, a lot of stuff going on in the Bible, and God still used him and considered him a friend of God. And I think if we just remind ourselves that it’s not us, we are in and of ourselves, we are inadequate, but that God, that’s the thing, but God! And as long as we stay plugged into the source, God will help that light shine through us. Like you said, you can make a lamp out of anything. If it’s wired properly, and that’s what we need to do, is stay wired properly by being plugged into God so that we can shine through his power. Dr. Chuck: I think that’s such a good spoonful for our audience that, in spite of our inadequate God’s adequacy, often shines through even brighter when we just kind of become ourselves and expose ourselves in a sense. Being vulnerable to ourselves and to others and to God. We’re here with Heather Carter, heathercarterwrites.com, she has a lot of great vlogs. We’re going to have a link to this story on her website. She is the author of “Soul-Selfie” and her second book is “Soul-Selfie: #nofilter” and, once again, Heather has been busy doing book signings and speaking and doing all the things that authors do, and, Heather, it’s just been great for you to take some time-out of this busy Christmas and share with us some of your insights. Heather Carter: Thanks for having me, have a great Christmas. Dr. Chuck: Absolutely. Have a merry Christmas to you, and don’t forget to text “spoonful” to 66866. I’m Doctor Page, the best guy to see on the worst day of your life.

In this video, Dr. Chuck recounts an experience that a friend shared with him where he knew that God was there with him during a difficult time.

/*! elementor - v3.7.7 - 20-09-2022 */.elementor-column .elementor-spacer-inner{height:var(--spacer-size)}.e-container{--container-widget-width:100%}.e-container>.elementor-widget-spacer{width:var(--container-widget-width,var(--spacer-size));-ms-flex-item-align:stretch;align-self:stretch;-ms-flex-negative:0;flex-shrink:0}.e-container>.elementor-widget-spacer>.elementor-widget-container,.e-container>.elementor-widget-spacer>.elementor-widget-container>.elementor-spacer{height:100%}.e-container>.elementor-widget-spacer>.elementor-widget-container>.elementor-spacer>.elementor-spacer-inner{height:var(--container-widget-height,var(--spacer-size))}

Dr. Chuck: Here’s today’s spoonful of courage. I had a friend, we’ll call him Jim for confidentiality purposes, and Jim had head and neck cancer and had to have radiation to his tongue and mouth. And I was talking with Jim one day, about a year after he finished radiation, and he was sharing some of his experiences and he said “Chuck, you’re not going to believe this, but I had this weird experience when I was on the on the table.”

If any of you know about how radiation works, they put you in this room, they isolate you because they’re shooting these beams of x-rays through you. Gamma rays, actually, through your mouth. They strap you down, they hold you still, and he said, “you know, as I was going through that process, you know i’m very claustrophobic,” and he said, “my wife got me these these worship tunes and I put these worship tunes on, and they pushed the button and then they began to start the radiation. And as the radiation began to start, I began to hear this grinding sound. That’s when I know they were beginning to shoot the gamma rays through me.” And he said, “during this process, when this began to happen, I began to worship and I began to sing those worship songs that my wife gave to me.” And he said, “several times during my radiation treatments, I would hear this singing as I was singing out loud. I would hear this singing. Of course, I couldn’t move, I was strapped. And there was this person that was singing there in the room.”

You know, I want to remind you that when you’re going through a difficult time, a difficult circumstance, you may not see God, but God is there. His angels are watching over you, and as you begin to practice the presence of God, that he will be there and he will watch over you in his grace. That he will walk with you through these difficult times. You know, I mean there was a time in Jim’s life when he knew that God’s presence. He just almost palpated him, that he knew he was there in the process, and I want to remind you that God is there. What things are you doing to practice the presence of God? Maybe singing, maybe reading the scriptures. I want to remind you, whatever circumstance you’re going through, that God is there and that he is working.

I’m Doctor Page, the best guy to see on the worst day of your life. If you’d like to read this, we have this article that it also tells the story in little bit different way on CBN. You can find that in the link below.

In this video, Dr. Chuck talks about the power of our words, and how things often said without thinking can have harmful consequences. He emphasizes the importance of stopping and listening to God before answering.

/*! elementor - v3.7.7 - 20-09-2022 */.elementor-column .elementor-spacer-inner{height:var(--spacer-size)}.e-container{--container-widget-width:100%}.e-container>.elementor-widget-spacer{width:var(--container-widget-width,var(--spacer-size));-ms-flex-item-align:stretch;align-self:stretch;-ms-flex-negative:0;flex-shrink:0}.e-container>.elementor-widget-spacer>.elementor-widget-container,.e-container>.elementor-widget-spacer>.elementor-widget-container>.elementor-spacer{height:100%}.e-container>.elementor-widget-spacer>.elementor-widget-container>.elementor-spacer>.elementor-spacer-inner{height:var(--container-widget-height,var(--spacer-size))} Dr. Chuck: Here’s today’s spoonful of courage. James 1:19 reminds us, “know this, my beloved brethren, let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger. For the anger of man does not work the righteousness of God”. You know, we’re living in an unparalleled, unprecedented, perilous times. I mean we think about all the events of 2020, the coronavirus, the riots in the streets, and then on the other side we have people that have attacked the capitol at a time when we were trying to certify an election, and so, thinking about these things, you know, it seems like our culture has gotten things just the opposite; we’re quick to get angry, we’re quick to say something without stopping and listening, and here the Book of James reminds us of the power of our words. And we think about this last year, how many words have been spoken out of anger? Have been spoken without really thinking about the consequences of those words and the consequences they would have on other people? Here James reminds us to be quick to hear, be slow to speak, and be very slow to answer. I want remind you of another verse in Isaiah, chapter 50, verse four, it says this: “The Lord has given me the tongue of those who are taught that I may know how to sustain with a word him that is weary. Morning by morning he wakens, he wakens my ear to hear, as those who are taught. It’s interesting here that the prophet Isaiah reminds us that God is constantly speaking to us, and we need to be quick to hear, first of all, what God says, not what the media says or what someone else says, but to really stop and to listen to God, to realize that he’s speaking to us through his word. He’s speaking to us through our circumstances, he’s speaking to us through other people, and he’s speaking to us by the Holy Spirit, who is guiding us and directing us, and so we, you know, if we stop and listen to God and then begin to stop and hear other people out, it doesn’t mean we have to agree with what they say, and then we filter through what God says, we’re going to be a lot better off, you know, but he has given us this instructive tongue. He’s given us his ability to listen to what he says and then to be slow to speak before we say things, to really think about the effect that it’s going to make. Is this going to inflame the issue? Is this going to cause more anger, more dissension, more problems? Or is this going to be something that promotes peace and, you know, establishes the greater kingdom, the kingdom of God? And then finally, to be slow to anger.  So I want you think about James 1:19 now and what we’re facing in our culture. To be quick to hear, to be slow to speak and be slow to anger. I’m Doctor Page, the best guy to see on the worst day of your life.

Dr. Page describes himself as the best guy to see on the worst day of your life. It would be simple to portray Dr. Charles Page, MD as just a country surgeon. But that would be missing way too much.

He helps everyday people navigate life’s inevitable tragedies and triumphs. As practicing surgeon, he has learned to listen to his patients. He aims to help people embrace a deeper understanding of why they respond to life events in the way they do.

Through his books, videos, and his TV show, Dr. Chuck peers into the everyday lives of people struggling, learning, and thriving in their challenges.

He comes along at a time when Americans, and the world for that matter, are going through confusing changes such as aging demographics and new technology that is changing how we work and live.

Dr. Chuck has created a viewpoint which reflects the struggles and setbacks of the patients who have entered his office. He tells their stories (with confidentiality—of course) in his short powerful devotions.

The goal of all Dr. Chuck’s writing and speaking is to express the impact that the Christian faith makes in our life struggles.

A graduate of the prestigious Baylor College of Medicine, he completed his training under pioneering surgeon, Dr. Michael E. Debakey, whose discoveries influenced medicine in the twentieth century.

When he’s not doctoring and mentoring, Dr. Chuck loves spending time with his wife, Joanna, and their five amazing children – Jacob, Jonathan, Georgia, Jane Aubrey and Charlie.

Dr. & Mrs. Page

Here’s a recent interview with Dr. Page on BooksShelves: Register here BooksShelves Interview

BookShelves: “When did you start writing?”

Dr. Chuck: “I started writing over fifteen years ago. My first book grew out of my quest for a good night’s sleep. I wrote a book which explored sleep and rest from a Christian worldview, called Surrendered Sleep.

As a physician all kinds of things rob my ability to sleep well. Trying to piece them all together I began to study the Bible to find some answers. I was surprised to find lots of answers to help me get some shut eye.

Being my first attempt at writing and publishing, I learned lots of things–the hard way. Now, years later–I’m able to laugh a little about my first book. I tell folks, ‘Read my book. One way or another–you’ll get a better nights sleep.’”

Bookshelves: “What makes writing your passion?”

Dr. Chuck: “Over the years I’ve realized writing is a way for me to process the chaotic events I encounter–as a surgeon, father, and husband. I’ve realized the greatest benefit is probably the one I receive–learning how to cope with life’s crazy circumstances.”

BooksShelves: “What would you say to your readers?”

Dr. Chuck: “I want my readers:

to be inspired.to have their faith and courage strengthened.to see the possibilities in their problems.to know they are not alone–that others are with them in their journey.”

BooksShelves: “Who are your favorite authors? And why?”

Dr. Chuck: “Max Lucado–for inspiring people’s faith. Jack Canfield–for writing volumes of impactful short stories. And Francis Schaefer–for encouraging people to think deeply about what they believe.”

Here’s some videos where we talk about Spoonful of Courage.

Dr. Dave talks about his prayer journey as a Christian and how prayer makes a difference.  Dr. Dave Walker author of God in the ICU About Dr. Walker: Dr. Dave Walker was a successful anesthesiologist with a special interest in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Disillusioned with God after a series of tragedies, he was living for himself and his work. But something was wrong. Although he was seeing people healed physically, their lives were not changed and it all seemed pointless. This set him on a quest to find a God who did not look on impersonally from a distance, as he thought, but was intimately involved in our lives. After a dramatic encounter, he started praying with his patients. Suddenly things happened beyond anything he could have imagined. Patients were healed miraculously, others experienced Jesus bringing comfort and peace and still others felt the power of God’s love in the face of tragedy.
And in the meantime Dave was facing his own personal trials that tested his faith to the limit.
Set firstly in a South Africa transitioning into democracy from apartheid and then in the Muslim world of the Middle East, God in the ICU will take you into the drama of critical care medicine, the inner life of a praying, caring physician and, above all, the response of a faithful, loving God to the prayers of His people. Told with transparency, compassion and an honest look at the lessons we can learn from His dealings with us, you will be encouraged to trust a God who is as close as a prayer away. All is not lost, however, as Page lovingly gives Fluffy another chance, crafting a unique spin on his eventual comeback. Bazley’s illustrations evoke holiday nostalgia and warmth, with classic Christmas hues and festive details like yuletide treats and stockings dangling over a crackling fire. Adult readers will find the underlying message of self-worth important—“I will give him the best gift of all: myself”—and Christian fans will appreciate the religious undertones to Page’s book.” Takeaway: A snowman ornament discovers his true worth in this festive tale.Great for fans of: Carol Heyer’s Humphrey’s First Christmas; Karma Wilson’s Mortimer’s Christmas Manger
