What a Calm Heart Does About Sleep
Do you sometimes feel plagued by your mistakes, unable to close your eyes from anxiety? Going to sleep is often the first time that we are still enough to think. Our brains work double time utilizing the moment of silence to drag up our old bones. We can’t help but hyper focusing on things that we would rather leave alone. It is at these times that we can feel frustrated with ourselves and our inability to shut our brains off. But how do we stop?
Here’s what the word of God says,
/*! elementor - v3.12.0 - 29-03-2023 */.elementor-heading-title{padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title[class*=elementor-size-]>a{color:inherit;font-size:inherit;line-height:inherit}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-small{font-size:15px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-medium{font-size:19px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-large{font-size:29px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xl{font-size:39px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xxl{font-size:59px}"And forgive our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us."Luke 11:4 Tremble and do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent." Psalm 4:4 "'In your anger do not sin': Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold." Ephesians 4:26
A calm heart examines itself before God. Asking for Him to forgive any sins and entrusting all doubts to Him. A calm heart trusts God’s character, and entrusts itself Him. Taking captive every thought, it filters it through God’s word. A calm heart thinks, “Is what I’m thinking true, is it biblical, does it glorify God?”
When we calm ourselves before God we can have peace like Psalm 131:
"My heart is not proud, O LORD, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. But I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me." Psalm 131:1It is different for every person, but through the Holy Spirit, you have the ability to calm your soul. Meditate on the word of God before you sleep and spend some time in prayer.

What a Calm Heart Knows about Sleep
Part two of the video series, Surrendered Sleep: A Biblical Perspective.
God is active as we sleep. In this video, we explore how God protects and provides for us while we sleep. A calm heart understands God’s complete maintenance of control and because of this understanding they experience His peace. My book, Surrendered Sleep: a Biblical Perspective – discusses how to get a good night’s sleep. God’s way. This video and post goes through some passages of the Bible where the Lord provided sleep for His servants.
Feel free to read these chapters in full and meditate on God’s power and love:
When Jesus sleeps on the boat in the storm (Mark 4:31-35)
/*! elementor - v3.12.0 - 29-03-2023 */.elementor-heading-title{padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title[class*=elementor-size-]>a{color:inherit;font-size:inherit;line-height:inherit}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-small{font-size:15px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-medium{font-size:19px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-large{font-size:29px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xl{font-size:39px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xxl{font-size:59px}"That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
When Peter sleeps in jail before execution (Acts 12)
God gives Peter the ability to sleep despite the uncertainty that he must have felt at being imprisoned. When we realize that God has complete control of every moment of our lives, and that He is over even our suffering, we can rest easy trusting that He knows best.
When Elisha sleeps and armies surrounded him (2 Kings 6)
Even while Elisha slept, the Lord protected him. We can trust that God will work out His will in our lives and that because He has control of everything it will be good.
Psalm 121:
"I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.2 My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.5 The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.7 The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.8 The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore."Knowing God’s protection, provision, and providence will help calm your heart as you sleep.

God, Sleep, and Hygiene Tips
Part One of the Sleep Series:
As we all know, sleep is an essential component of living. We physically cannot function without getting some rest. But why do we sleep? As Christians we know that sleep has been given to us by God. It’s a part of His very design for us. But if it’s a part of His design why do some of us struggle with falling asleep? What should we do when we find ourselves in the midst of sleepless nights?
To begin we must think about what God has said and start from there:
/*! elementor - v3.12.0 - 29-03-2023 */.elementor-heading-title{padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title[class*=elementor-size-]>a{color:inherit;font-size:inherit;line-height:inherit}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-small{font-size:15px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-medium{font-size:19px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-large{font-size:29px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xl{font-size:39px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xxl{font-size:59px} "He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleeps." Psalm 121:3-4God never sleeps. His perfect power withstands all time, and he requires no recharge. But we, man, were made in such a way that we would know that we are finite. We need many things to survive and this is a reflection of our ultimate need for a savior, for Jesus. In our submission to God’s design, we are still called to steward the bodies that God has given us and sleeping is an essential part of this kind of worship. The following verse explains this perfectly.
"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies."1 Corinthians 6:19-20So we can take steps today to improve our patterns of sleep with the knowledge that our bodies are a means of glorifying the Lord. Sleeping provides the energy that we need to live and serve Him.
Here are two things that can help improve your sleep:
1. Rule out and exclude any sleep disorders by going to a sleep specialist.
Many of us, including myself, have sleep disorders. For years I struggled with sleep and even wrote a book about it before I was able to be diagnosed. This is the first wise decision you can make in order to improve your sleep.
2. Set up healthy sleep habits:
Go to bed at the same time every night, make sure to not participate in any distractions before bed, and don’t drink coffee six hours before you are intending to sleep.
This is a spoonful of courage,
Dr. Chuck

Why do People Believe in God?
The Rationale for God
The question of “Why do reasonable people believe in God?” can be answered simply: because God is real. This is a fundamental truth that impacts every corner of the universe. For those who profess to be Christians the reality that the Bible is fact, that Jesus rose from the grave after dying in our place, and the realization that He has complete sovereignty over the universe should be a source a encouragement and a bedrock of our lives.
Even while we understand the existence of God, there are those who do not. We have all met an atheist who finds faith in Jesus Christ as laughable and ridiculous. After these kinds of situations, you may find yourself frustrated at your inability to reason or doubting your own faith. That is why it is essential to understand and be able to prove the faith that you have. Paul says it this way,
“But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect..” (1 Peter 3:15).
The Lord wants us to use our minds to honor and glorify Him. Being able to think logically about our faith is one of the most fundamental aspects of Christianity. God says,
“Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool” (Isaiah 1:18).
&
“You shall love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength” (Deuteronomy 6:5)
So how can be begin to prove God’s existence? We’ll start with three areas of knowledge that provide the necessary evidence that we need:
ScienceMoral feelings and absolutesHistory /*! elementor - v3.12.0 - 29-03-2023 */.elementor-widget-image{text-align:center}.elementor-widget-image a{display:inline-block}.elementor-widget-image a img[src$=".svg"]{width:48px}.elementor-widget-image img{vertical-align:middle;display:inline-block}

These three spheres include the three basic components that make up life. Science, the physical and natural world around us. History, the recorded accounts of the past. Human nature, what we know to be true about ourselves.
The Circle of Science:
– Cosmology: The Big Bang theory shows that the earth has grown from a small point, and is continually expanding. This fits into the story of creation. God created the earth from a fixed point.
– The earth is perfectly adequate for human life: if the sun had been just a little bit further away, or our bodies lacked one organ, we would die. Is this kind of precision the work of chance? Absolutely not.
The Circle of History:
The Circle of Human Nature/ Moral Feelings:
Scientists and thinkers have tried to explain away the human conscience. They rationalize our feelings of empathy, guilt, and anger with concepts such as the herd mentality. We care for others only because we’re all the same breed. This doesn’t explain enough. But a personal God does.
Obviously this post doesn’t scratch the surface, and it’s not supposed to. I hope this was a helpful quick read that you can use to discuss your faith with others.
This is a spoonful of courage,
Dr. Chuck

Doubting God’s Love?
Our spiritual life sometimes feels like a tangled mix of wires. We get lost in our inadequacies, shame, and guilt. These feelings can blind us from reflecting on the completed work of Jesus Christ making our situation worse. The good news is that our loving Father and Lord, who saved us, doesn’t leave us alone in our struggles. He provides the clarity that we need in the midst of uncertainty. He has and does demonstrate His love so that we may be strengthened to continue our walk with Him.
Hebrews 9:14 explains this perfectly:
/*! elementor - v3.12.0 - 29-03-2023 */.elementor-heading-title{padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title[class*=elementor-size-]>a{color:inherit;font-size:inherit;line-height:inherit}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-small{font-size:15px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-medium{font-size:19px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-large{font-size:29px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xl{font-size:39px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xxl{font-size:59px}"How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!"We can take courage in the truth that our heavenly Father will finish the work that He has started in us. Even though you may feel like a blind dog stumbling through the darkness, there is a God who deeply cares for you, and He is, if you call on Him, drawing you towards Himself. It is His holy word that will untangle your mix of wires. There’s no need to stumble in the darkness any longer. We can with confidence come before his throne and like Matthew 11: 25-30 (ESV) says, take up His yoke:
"At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.[g] 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”This is a Spoonful of Courage,

The Self-Sufficient Rancher
Dr. Chuck tells story about a crazy home remedy and applies some spiritual truths. First session of the Courage for the Sick and Suffering Bible Study
The story of the self-sufficient Rancher at first sounds kind of funny. And maybe a little bit crazy.
But if we’re painfully honest with ourselves. We can identify with that old stubborn rancher. We face a set of life events. Cancer.
A health crisis.A change in our circumstances. And we try to fix things on our own….. In our own self-sufficiency and self-effort, we think we know better than God does.
I’ve learned as a surgeon for over twenty-five years, I can do surgery, I can give medicines, but I can’t heal people. There’s a dynamic greater than myself at work.
And that’s where we begin. Have you first came to the Great Physician?
Have you asked Him to guide, direct, and heal?
If you start by looking upward, God will supply the means to fulfill the outcome he desires in your health challenges.
Let me ask you a question, Like the old rancher, is your heart out of rhythm?
I’m not talking about a physical malady, but a spiritual one. You heart was created to be in rhythm with One who created you.
Jesus knows you and your circumstances better than you do. And you know, the Great Physician offers his services for free.

Shifting Gears to Higher Levels of Thinking
In this video, Dr. Chuck talks about the negative impact of driving in a lower gear had on his old truck, and how, similarly, operating life on a lower level of thinking, on a lower gear, can have a negative impact on our lives. He discuses the importance of shifting gears to higher levels of thinking and the difference it can make.

Anyway, I kind of ended up driving Old Blue, and one of the interesting things about it is we actually burned out the engine. And I love my wife, I’m not saying anything about women drivers, okay? But just understand that Old Blue’s got some nuances that you kind of have to know about like the doors, the windows, and the gearshift is one of the things. So, once my wife drove my truck and she drove the truck in second gear. She didn’t realize she was driving in a lower gear. She actually burned up the engine. As I begin to think of and thinking of these formulas and these levels of thinking, so often we live our lives operating on a lower level of thinking, on a lower gear. So often we experience stress and burnout, fatigue and worry when all we have to do is shift into this higher level of thinking, this third gear, where everything fits better and runs better. That’s kind of the whole idea of these spoonfuls of courage is that people will kind of have the tools to be able to live a life- I’m not saying you’re not gonna live a life free of stress or whatever- but to be able to cope with that, to be able to adapt to the challenges that we have in life. And that’s kind of the whole concept of these books is to help you be able to have the tools that you need and a framework of thinking to understand how to move forward.

Yes I Can: Encouragement for Leaders
In this interview, Dr. Chuck has author and speaker Bruce Pulver explain his approach when empowering and encouraging leaders when they embark on a new endeavor, starting with the simple phrase, “yes I can.”
/*! elementor - v3.12.0 - 29-03-2023 */.elementor-widget-video .elementor-widget-container{overflow:hidden;transform:translateZ(0)}.elementor-widget-video .elementor-wrapper iframe,.elementor-widget-video .elementor-wrapper video{height:100%;width:100%;display:flex;border:none;background-color:#000}.elementor-widget-video .elementor-open-inline .elementor-custom-embed-image-overlay{position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;background-size:cover;background-position:50%}.elementor-widget-video .elementor-custom-embed-image-overlay{cursor:pointer;text-align:center}.elementor-widget-video .elementor-custom-embed-image-overlay:hover .elementor-custom-embed-play i{opacity:1}.elementor-widget-video .elementor-custom-embed-image-overlay img{display:block;width:100%}.elementor-widget-video .e-hosted-video .elementor-video{-o-object-fit:cover;object-fit:cover}.e-con-inner>.elementor-widget-video,.e-con>.elementor-widget-video{width:var(--container-widget-width);--flex-grow:var(--container-widget-flex-grow)} /*! elementor - v3.12.0 - 29-03-2023 */.elementor-column .elementor-spacer-inner{height:var(--spacer-size)}.e-con{--container-widget-width:100%}.e-con-inner>.elementor-widget-spacer,.e-con>.elementor-widget-spacer{width:var(--container-widget-width,var(--spacer-size));--align-self:var(--container-widget-align-self,initial);--flex-shrink:0}.e-con-inner>.elementor-widget-spacer>.elementor-widget-container,.e-con-inner>.elementor-widget-spacer>.elementor-widget-container>.elementor-spacer,.e-con>.elementor-widget-spacer>.elementor-widget-container,.e-con>.elementor-widget-spacer>.elementor-widget-container>.elementor-spacer{height:100%}.e-con-inner>.elementor-widget-spacer>.elementor-widget-container>.elementor-spacer>.elementor-spacer-inner,.e-con>.elementor-widget-spacer>.elementor-widget-container>.elementor-spacer>.elementor-spacer-inner{height:var(--container-widget-height,var(--spacer-size))} /*! elementor - v3.12.0 - 29-03-2023 */.elementor-heading-title{padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title[class*=elementor-size-]>a{color:inherit;font-size:inherit;line-height:inherit}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-small{font-size:15px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-medium{font-size:19px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-large{font-size:29px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xl{font-size:39px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xxl{font-size:59px}Yes I Can: Encouragement for LeadersDr. Chuck: Welcome to Spoonful of Courage, I’m with Bruce Pulver. He’s an author, a speaker and, by the way, he’s done an exceptional TED talk, and Bruce helps us change the way we think about the words that we use. In fact, his book is Above The Chatter, Our Words Matter. Bruce, it’s great to have you on the show.
Bruce Pulver: Thanks, Chuck, it’s great to be here. Enjoy our conversation, looking forward to a few minutes of just breaking down some words and talking about how they can empower us.
Dr. Chuck: Yup, and so one of your favorite, I guess, groups to talk to are those who are leaders in business or healthcare or whatever type of, whatever game their leadership is, sales. And you’ve got a word for leaders, share us that word.
Bruce Pulver: Yeah, so this is so important to me. It’s the embarking on any engagement, a new one, you know, a green pasture, maybe a big struggle. I mean, maybe like the economy or the business struggles right now. We’ve got to figure a new way, we’re trying to reflect on our experience and say, “hey, you know, we can’t do it the way we used to” and a lot of times that could create, like limiting, limiting mindset, like, “what you mean? We’ve always done it that way”. So, I like a three word phrase. It’s leaders, but, man, you can also take this to your kids, you can take this to a team, you can take this to, you know, an athletic performance, music performance, and it’s three words, and it’s the phrase: “yes, I can.” If you start any endeavor, any initiative, any kickoff meeting with, “hey, I know this is a challenge. I know we’ve never done this before, but let’s start with, ‘yes, I can,'” and you write, “yes, I can” vertically, and to me, very quickly, it became, “You Expect Success In Challenging Activities Now.” So, think about entering a new market, “yes, I can. We can do this. We’ve got what it takes.” Another phrase I use is: “you are e-n-u-f,” you are enough. Born that way, got everything you need, it’s just a matter of assembling the parts, bringing in others, etc. But “you are enough”, and saying, “yes, I can,” could teach a three-year old, you know, to climb the monkey bars, and it can help a CEO lead a company into a new market by starting with a mindset that you believe you can.
Dr. Chuck: But when they fall from the monkey bars to help one another, enough to get up again and keep trying.
Bruce Pulver: That’s right.
Dr. Chuck: I was always the kid that fell off the monkey bars, Bruce. You weren’t the guy that would push the people off the monkey bars, were you?
Bruce Pulver: No, no, I might have been pushed by my older brother, but, you know, that’s all another story, a whole other segment.
Dr. Chuck: Gotcha, so for leaders, I like those two words, “yes, I can,” and, “enough,” right?
Bruce Pulver: Yes, yes, because we are enough, because we all have, what I call, another word I love in leadership, and sometimes some of the faith-based talks that I give, is that we all have “gifts.” Unique gifts, and we should celebrate them, because gifts are “God Installed Features To Share,” real simple, we all have them. So, as you bring this leadership team together, and it may not have a faith aspect, it may not be able to based on sort of the environment you’re working. But if you realize that everyone that’s in this room and wrapped around this table has a gift to bring towards the solution, and you say, “yes, I can,” you are off to the races. It may not happen immediately, it may not be easier to fix, but with the mindset of “we’ve got this.” ” Yes, I can,” has led me in my sales performance, has led me in teamwork that I’ve done for us to get better outcome closer to, not perfection, because that’s unattainable in my opinion, but closer to the best excellence that we can perform.
Dr. Chuck: That’s the best that we can do. We’re here with Bruce Pulver, Above The Chatter, Our Words Matter. It’s a great book, in fact, I’ve been reading it and going over it, and it’s a short read, It’s got a lot of crossage. What it really does, is it kind of helps you begin the process of writing these words down, and I want to encourage you to check that out on his website, Bruce Pulver, Above The Chatter, Our Words Matter. Excuse me, and, once again, don’t forget to text “Spoonful” to 66866 and to find more of these shows, and we’re going to have Bruce on some more segments. Bruce, it’s been great having you.
Bruce Pulver: Thank you.
