We Can Serve Because We Are Secure
Here’s today’s spoonful of courage:
In John 13, there’s an interesting phrase repeated—over and over—like a broken record. That Jesus knew everything.
Jesus knew—his “hour” has come, meaning his time to endure the suffering of the cross.
Jesus knew—the one who would betray him: Judas.
And Jesus knew—“all things” had been given to him.
What’s interesting here is the link between what Jesus knew about himself, others, and his circumstances…… and what he did with it.
What Jesus knew influenced what he did…..
He took up a basin and towel—and washed his disciples—those rascal’s feet.
He modeled for his disciples –and us, his followers—how to live. As a servant…..
And after providing the example, he charges his followers to follow in his footsteps..
“a servant isn’t better than his master. The ones who are sent (that’s us) aren’t better than the one who sends (that’s Jesus).
What’s interesting here…. Is that what Jesus knew, influenced what he did…..
And the same applies to us… Jesus’ followers… 2 millenniums later…
What we know—or should know—about ourselves… determines what we do…
The more secure we are in Christ… the more embedded our identity is in the One who is above all things and who holds all things together…
The more we will serve…. Without trying to prove ourselves, without worrying about what others think, or worrying how we will benefit…
When our identity is secure and safe, resting in the arms of an all-wise, all-loving God… no telling how we will serve and what we will do in the Name of Christ.
What we know about ourselves, God, and our circumstances, determine what we do….
Here’s just one thing—amongst a million things—you need to know….. that will have an impact on your life….your purpose… and your mission….
If you have received Christ, then the Spirit of Christ lives within you.
Now, I’m not saying you’re gonna walk on water, or raise the dead, or with one laser beam of Holy Spirit power—do something spectacular…..
We were never designed or purposed to be responsible for the sins of the world.
We’re not Jesus…
But… it’s something to ponder…
Everything we need to fulfill the purposes God has in store for our lives and ministry… has been given to us…
Because the Spirit of Christ lives within us…
Jesus recognized a need, did something no one else wanted to do, threw off his inhibits and self-consciousness about what others would think—-and simply pick up the towel and serve…
Believers have the same Spirit living with us… that empowered Jesus to do what he did…
Now that’s something to know… and wrap our minds around…
And what we know about ourselves, and the security we have in Christ…
Knowing that our identity, purpose, and future is safe and secure.
Will change everything… especially what we DO, our lives…

How We Can Serve Like Jesus
Here’s your spoonful of courage for today:
IMAGINE KING CHARLES cleaning the toilets at Buckingham palace. No one would expect the King of England to stoop and perform such a humble task. Heck, such a crazy act would probably never cross anyone’s mind. King Charles has layers of servants to do those kinds of menial tasks for him.
But King Charles pales in comparison to what the King of Heaven did when he left his heavenly throne and came to serve.
Christ’s servant attitude is best modeled in John chapter thirteen. More than any other passage in the Bible, these verses express the very heart and mind of Jesus.
John’s thirteenth chapter marks a big transition in the book of John. In the first twelve chapters, Jesus performs miracles and gives messages, confirming that he is the Messiah, the Son of God. With his words and with his works, Jesus declares that He is God.
After finishing his public ministry, Jesus begins his private one. He prepares his disciples for his crucifixion, resurrection, and beyond. One of the interesting things about this “Upper Room Discourse” is what Jesus knew and what he did with what he knew.
If you read the first twelve verses of John 13, you can see all things Jesus knew.
First, he knew that His HOUR had come. The purpose for which he had came—to die and serve as a substitute for mankind was at hand.
Second, Jesus knew “that God had put ALL THINGS under his power and authority.
Colosians 1: 17 says it this way “He is above all things and in Him all things hold together.”
Every molecule, every atom in the universe is “held together” by the power and authority of Jesus. Unknown stars and galaxies are preserved by Jesus, the Word. Every chemical reaction in our bodies are perpetuated and sustained by Jesus.
Wow. Now that’s an infinitesimal amount of authority and power.
Paul in Romans 11 and verse 36, says it this way. “Now from Him and through Him and to Him are all things”.
ALL THINGS….. THE SAME PHRASE USED IN THESE TWO PASSAGES IS THE SAME ALL THINGS THAT JESUS KNEW….
What would WE do with that kind of authority and power? Well probably not what Jesus did with it?
What’s interesting here is what Jesus does—with all of His knowledge, power, and authority.
Jesus recognizes a need, takes the initiative, and does a task that no one else wants to do. He washes the feet of his disciples.
The problem: stinky, dirty feet. In those days, there were no chairs. Everyone ate on the floor, eating off a small table.
The feet of others—were in your face as you tried to eat your meal.
Some in the room, that evening—were perhaps oblivious. Perhaps they minimized the issue, trying to ignore it or “sweep it under the rug.”
But this was the “elephant in the room.” This was an IN YOUR FACE kind of issue. IT WASN’T A PROBLEM ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PLANET. It was in their own backyard.
AND IT WAS REALLY PRETTY SIMPLE… IT DIDN’T TAKE A LARGE AMOUNT OF TIME OR RESOURCES…. Just the willingness of someone to do what no one else would do.
Perhaps the disciples recognized the problem—but made excuses. Maybe they were waiting for someone else to do it. Maybe they thought it was someone else’s responsibility.
Maybe the reason the disciples didn’t take the initiative was because of their pride…. In other passages the disciples were just arguing who would be the greatest. They were discussing who would have the greatest position of power and authority when Jesus took over.
What Jesus knew—about Himself, His power, His position, His purpose—influenced what he did. He humbled himself, got up, took off his robe, put on a towel, and washed the disciples’ feet. The one who deserved to have his feet washed and to be served—washed everyone’s feet.
Even Judas, his betrayer—got his feet cleansed by the Savior.
This act, this selfless deed, expresses—like nothing else, the heart of God. Think about it. What Jesus knew—determined what He did.
What should we know about ourselves. Well, here’s a few things:
If you are a follower of Christ, you are secure.
God’s love for you has no limit. You are accepted based on his completed work—not your performance.
God has promised to never leave or forsake you. In whatever circumstances you face, God’s hems you in, goes before you, come along beside you, and guide you through.
God has equipped you with all the resources needed to fulfill God’s purposes for your life.
Here’s something to know. Our past is forgiven. In the present—we have everything we need. And in the future? Well, the best is yet to come.
When we are secure in our identity, knowing who we are in Christ, we have the freedom to DO AND ACT AND FOLLOW in the footsteps of Jesus.
After finishing Jesus put back on his robe, and sat down, and said: “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”
“Now that you KNOW these things, you will be blessed if you DO them”.

One aspect that I absolutely loved is that the doctor is called in to help Lizzie.
Lizzie is a person of color, and as a parent to children of color, this means a great deal to me. Overall, this is a well-written, thoughtful, and fun journey into Lizzy’s gizzard, and it received two enthusiastic, if a little sticky, thumbs up.

Tips for Peace
Here’s your spoonful of courage.
Here’s three practical suggestions:
In the last video, we discussed three ways to experience the peace of God: we pray, we get our perspective focused, and we put into practice what we know to do. you may need to check out the video in the link provided.
So let’s dive into it. If you’re like me, I struggle with prayer. Here’s something which really has been helpful for me. I pray the scriptures, specifically the Psalms. I take a psalm and read the verse and pray what comes to mind. What’s striking about this method is that I realized that the writers were facing some of the same problems that I typically face. Praying the Psalms also helps me with distractions.
Sometimes I don’t know what to pray and if I encounter those verses it’s confusing and I move on and skip it. This always stirs up creativity. Sometimes a verse will help me see a problem in a new way, something I had never thought of before. That’s one way to pray.
Once again as we pray, the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will fill us and God’s words bring peace.
Here’s the second practical way we can experience peace: meditation.
We replace negative thoughts with those mentioned in Philippians 4:8. Have you ever prayed and given an issue over to God and then boom, five minutes later that problem is boomering back into your consciousness and you’re robbed of peace again? So have I.
we have to replace one thought, the one weighing us down, with one of God’s good promises. That’s where meditation comes in.
Meditation involves filling the mind, not emptying it as other world views suggest. Let’s meditate on one of God’s promises to get peace. Isaiah 26:3 “And you will keep him in perfect peace those whose mind is stayed on you”. This promise really fits in well with Philippians. “Finally brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is good repute, if there’s any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things”.
We’re encouraged to meditate, that’s the mind stayed on God. So to meditate, take a verse, pick it apart, just meditate.
What does that mean, the mind stayed? Well in surgery, we use stay sutures. Stay sutures fixate tissues together. With stay sutures, structures don’t move. We should stay our thinking. This is a conditional promise. We can’t be doing mental flip-flops, bouncing back-and-forth.
So the second part about it is our part. Now let’s look at the first part of the verse. That’s God’s part; “You will keep him or her in perfect peace”.
What does it mean that God will keep you in perfect peace? The God of the universe is describing in Colossions the one who is above all things and in whom all things hold together. You think God has the ability to keep you? Now that’s a promise to meditate on.
“And we are kept in perfect peace”. Well, what does that mean to be perfect? Do you see that what we’re doing here, we’re meditating, we’re ruminating on those things that are true, honorable, right, and excellent. And as we begin to focus on these things, guess what, those problems weighing us down just fade away because they’ve been replaced; because we are staying our mind on the God of peace.

Praying For Peace
I’m Dr. Chuck and here’s today’s spoonful of courage:
Let me ask you a question; has it ever crossed your mind that you don’t need to pray for peace? Let me unpack that statement because it may be a little confusing. I’m not suggesting that you don’t pray and I’m not suggesting that peace doesn’t come from prayer, absolutely not, but has it ever crossed your mind that God has already given you peace before you even pray for it?
A better prayer may be this: God help me appropriate the peace that you have already given me based upon your completed word. If you know Christ, you have the peace of Christ, it comes with the package. The free gift given to you. The outflow of the spirit of Christ which dwells in every believer has already been given to you. In the upper room discourse, Jesus prepares the disciples for his crucifixion.
Listen to his words in John 14: “ Peace I leave with you, peace I give you not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful”.
There’s something unique about the peace that Jesus gives. It isn’t experienced through self-effort, earned through self-sufficiency, or preserved through self-determination; it’s freely given. This peace flows from the adequacy of Christ and this tranquility of heart has been freely given.
God’s peace, which is unique from the world, has been deposited in our lives because of the spirit. It’s the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Since the God of peace lives within you, you have the access to the peace of God. Go back and read Philippians 4:6-9. Jesus, the prince of peace, has given you all the peace you need.
So when you feel anxious, pray. Ask God to help you embrace the peace of God and the God of peace. If you’re fretting the future, a past failure, a perplexing decision, a health challenge, whatever it is, as you pray take hold of God’s promise in Philippians 4:7, “And the peace of God which surpasses all comprehension will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus”.

How God’s Lovingkindness Guides Us?
Here’s today’s Spoonful of courage:
Our blind and deaf dog, Bart, illustrates—in some ways—God’s guidance, lovingkindness, and patience. Bart isn’t the brightest dog on our porch. And he’s visually impaired. And he’s deaf. But with all these challenges, Bart finds a way to play fetch with a ball.
Bart has this heightened sense of smell. Since he can’t see where the ball’s thrown. And since he can’t hear us say stuff like, “here Bart, go fetch” he has only his nose.
I often feel like old Blind Bart when it comes to knowing the way. Knowing God’s will, the next step to take in life, the best choice in my circumstances—I feel deaf and blind. And I need God’s grace and lovingkindness to show me how to navigate life’s crazy circumstances.
Now Bart can get on your nerves. And when he’s bothering us—and we want to get rid of him—we throw the ball and let Bart smell his way around the yard. And after a long delay… Bart sniff’s out the ball.
Back to the question, how does God direct, guide, and lead us through our life challenges?
Well, God doesn’t deal with us the way we deal with old Bart. He doesn’t just throw the ball out there, somewhere, and expect us to sniff it out.
God could just leave us to ourselves to figure things out, like we sometimes do with Bart… especially when he’s a nuisance.
How does God do that?
Well here’s two ways grace led those who believe in Him:
First God gives us his Word. Listen to what the scriptures say. “Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light on my path.” That’s Psalm 119 verse 105.
God gives us objective precepts, principles, and promises to guide us. First, to understand how God’s love leads, look to his word. If there’s conflict between the direction between the way you think you should go and what God says…. Trust me…. That’s not the way.
Let the light of God’s objective truth show you the way.
But God doesn’t just stop there. God’s lovingkindness is more than a set of intellectual principles. Because of the completed work of Christ, we have a personal guide. God has given us Himself—the Counselor, the Helper, the Spirit of Christ.
And if you have truly received Christ… you have His Spirit living within you—walking beside you, showing you the way you should go.
Listen to Romans 8:14. “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children (or Sons) of God.”
God doesn’t treat you like we treat Blind Bart sometimes. He initiates, invites, and comes along with us to show us the way. He offers to come along with us… to give us His presence. The Spirit of Christ doesn’t force us, or push us. The Spirit walks beside us, nudging us on…. Showing us the way we should go.
These two ways God’s lovingkindness leads us, should give us courage. God doesn’t want to leave us in the dark about what the next step should be. He provides both the objective and the subjective—working together to show us the way we should go.
The Spirit will never lead us in a direction which is contrary to His word. And, of course, the reverse is true.
So if you feel like Blind Bart, take courage. Draw on these two resources which grace offers freely to those who believe. His word and His presence—dwelling within.
Stop, think, and pray about your life circumstances. An all wise, all loving, all powerful, God of grace wants to show you the way.
If you know Christ, God’s lovingkindness will never let you go. And if you’ll ask and seek, He’ll move heaven and earth to show you His will.

How God Helps Us Love Others
I’m Dr. Chuck, and here’s your spoonful of courage:
As we’ve discussed before, Grace has poured out in our hearts. Romans 5:5 suggests that every believer has received an overflowing dose of love—based on Christ’s finished work.
But how do we express that unconditional affection toward those who hurt us, who frustrate us, and seem to be more of an obstacle?
How do we say a kind word when we really want to choke that hard to love person?
The Spirit of Christ has given us the resources needed to express kindness, generosity, and patience for those challenging people. God’s love is there, but we have to draw it out and utilize it. With God all things are possible, but they aren’t always easy.
Here’s some simple tips:
First—Stop and take a deep breath. Instead of responding in a way you’ll regret, pause. Your silence speaks more than you know.Second—Ask for help. Ask for wisdom. James 1:5 promises that if we lack wisdom in a situation… we can ask. God will supply a wise response. Sometimes, that means putting some distance between us and our problem person. Sometimes that means listening and filtering what they have to say.
Third: Take your emotions—anger, frustrations, and hurts to God in prayer. The Psalms are filled with people coming to God with intense feelings towards those difficult people. Some of those Psalms don’t sound super spiritual. We read things like:
God, knock their teeth out. Break their jaw. Hit them with a lightning bolt of judgement. Yep, its much better to express our raw feeling to God than dump them out before those who have hurt us—or to others we confide in.
God knows what we’re thinking and feeling anyway. And God has experienced hurts and frustrations. Need I remind you of the cross? False accusations. Insults. Hurts beyond our imagination.
Fourth: Reflect on this. We don’t get what we deserve. We’ve received grace and mercy instead of judgement. We are forgiven.
Fifth: Change focus. We’ve got to stop thinking about the offenses against us and begin thinking about the needs and interests of others.
The scriptures encourage us to build others up…. Not tear them down.
With humility of mind… we are encouraged to regard others as more important than ourselves. (That’s Phillipians 2:1-4). We should look out/”focus”/ on the interests of others rather than our own.
So often we fail to recognize that hurt people hurt others. And those that have been hurt—tend to lash out….
And God’s love helps us break the cycle of heaping hurt upon hurt upon hurt.
And finally, reflect upon the scriptures… God not only describes what this kind of love looks like… say for example the “love” chapter in 1 Corinthians 13….
He gives us promises….. Here’s one:
“For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love, and discipline.” That’s second timothy 1:7.
Love— the believer has it.
Power—God gives us the ability to express it.
Discipline—the ability to control our attitudes and actions…. And be governed by the Spirit instead of our old nature.
So, when you faced with a hard to love person… and squeezed into a tough situation, remember these little tips.

Three Verses About How God Loves Us
I’m Dr. Chuck and here’s your spoonful of courage:
Our culture has such a distorted view of love, it’s hard for many of us to wrap our minds around what it means that God loves us.
Here’s the first verse: Ephesians 2: 4-5
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ…”
Love expresses the nature of God. God is love. This undeserved affection does for us what we cannot do for ourselves. This verse reminds us that we were dead in our sins. Now, you don’t have to be a physician—or a rocket surgeon—to understand that when your dead—your dead. Dead people cannot do anything—well because their dead.
The great physician did something neither you nor I, nor any surgeon could do. He brings spiritually dead people to life. This ability comes from the resurrection. The power which raised Christ from the dead works in those who believe, who take God up on His promise. By faith, we are “made alive together with Christ.”
Not only does God’s love do for us what we cannot do, God’s love gives us what we don’t deserve.
You see, before God took the initiative—to bring the dead to life—we were children of wrath. We didn’t deserve and couldn’t earn God’s acceptance. Giving us what we don’t deserve expresses God’s mercy. God’s love is “rich in mercy”.
So here’s the second verse. It expresses God’s love in another way. Romans 5:8, It says, “But God demonstrates His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
We all know the power of demonstration. Like the door to door salesmen, selling a vacuum cleaner. He knows that if he is able to show off his product—then buyers will be convinced. God’s demonstration of love was very practical. Love comprises more than feelings, it acts. God’s affections do something on our behalf. God’s demonstration of love came on the cross, where Jesus took our place. By His death, we were given life. Christ took our punishment and gives us life.
Both these verses have a common phrase. It’s one easy to overlook. But God. You see on our own, left to ourselves, we were in a heap of trouble. But God—initiated. But God—intervened. But God cared enough to do something.
God is the source of love:
God’s love does for us what we cannot do for ourselves.
God’s love gives us what we don’t deserve.
God’s loves is fully expressed and demonstrated by Christ taking our place and being our substitute.
God’s love initiates a relationship. God’s love intervenes for us.
Man, that’s good news in a culture which such a distorted view of love. I would challenge you think about this good news.
Woops, I almost for the third verse. Many of you probably know it. John 3:16. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
God’s heart of love motivated Him to Give—of Himself.
How should we respond to this unmerited love. Whosoever—is an open invitation to receive His gift. Think about it.
