Have you been watching…Utopia
My love of TV + my blog = Awesome fun sharing times.
Enjoy the shows I think are The Shizz
Utopia
Utopia recently finished it’s six episode first series. It was a bit awesome.
Utopia is a graphic novel that has a cult following, a comic that is rumoured to predict the worst disasters of the last century. Volume 1 was published years ago, but a rumoured second volume brings together four disparate fans who soon discover the events Utopia depicts are not fictional. The four are persecuted, arrested, tortured – all for their proximity to the rumoured second volume. But when the mysterious Jessica Hyde appears, they will never, ever be able to return to their normal lives…
Conspiracies, double-crossing and desperation are the order of the day with Utopia. Intricately plotted, the story moves at a fast pace, though a sense of dread riddles each scene. Beautifully shot, each episode is an absolute visual delight. Bright yellow dominates the palette, and the presence of this almost sickeningly bright colour highlights the Very Important Scenes.
It also had banging theme music.
The Brits are amazingly stylish and bold with their programming, responsible for some truly outstanding television in recent times (Misfits, Being Human, The Fades, etc). Utopia more than adds to this fantastic trend, and it was an absolute pleasure to watch each episode.
It ended in true post-apocalyptic fashion, though it seems a second series is in the works. I’ll definitely be signing up for more!
Find out more at Utopia’s website, IMDb and Wikipedia.

Author Interview: Olivia Starke
Peeps, please join me in welcoming Olivia Starke to the blog. Olivia is a fellow Decadent author and has the EXTREME GOOD TASTE to be obsessed with Steven Moffat. A lass after my own heart, that’s for sure!
So, Olivia, please take it away!
Cassandra Dean: Congratulations on the release of DREAMING IN BLUE! Would you tell us a little about it?
Olivia Starke: DREAMING IN BLUE is my second addition to Decadent Publishing’s popular 1Night Stand series. I wanted to make my heroine unique in that she faces life in a different way than many people. She’s been blind since childhood, but it hasn’t slowed her down. She’s accomplished, and remains positive despite her inability to see. I wanted readers to see a strong woman who let nothing get in the way of her life’s goals.
My hero suffered heartbreaking loss after a house fire. He’s scarred both physically and emotionally, and he’s carried it too long. When he’s paired with Sierra, he doesn’t know what to expect. If she’ll react negatively to his past and how he now looks because of it.
It may seem cliché to pair a blind woman with a scarred hero, but there’s an unexpected twist in there that Madame Evangeline, owner of 1Night Stand, had planned all along
CD: What inspired you to write DREAMING IN BLUE?
OS: Both the book and the movie Patch of Blue. A wonderful story of a blind white girl who falls in love with a black man in the 60s, I encourage everyone to at least watch the movie starring Sidney Poitier and Shelly Winters. Their story is pretty heartbreaking, and I wanted write one where my heroine has a happy ending. My storyline is very different, but the struggle remains for my heroine and hero to find their happily ever after.
CD: You write super hot paranormal romance. How do you go about writing in this genre?
OS: Though DREAMING IN BLUE doesn’t have the paranormal element, I did work in a big surprise. Perhaps it’s got a little magic after all, that’s what Madame Evangeline is all about But most my work is paranormal, because I love the world building behind it. You aren’t constrained by day to day life and the laws governing it. I can be who I want to be, and write whatever my wacky mind can conceive. I’ve always had an active imagination, my imaginary friends when I was a kid were a Sabertooth Tiger and a big black horse. They followed me every morning to school, running alongside the bus, then back home in the afternoon.
In Junior High I wrote a romance about a Pegasus and Unicorn. Falling into the supernatural realm of romance came naturally.
CD: What did you find easiest/most difficult about writing paranormal romance?
OS: I have an analytical mind, so if my vampires can’t spend much time in sunlight, I have to know the science of why. Then explain it so readers will understand. I can’t just throw it out there and expect others to suspend belief on my say so. But this is part of the joy for me, too. Letting my geek flag fly. I’ve got a current series contracted through Beachwalk Press titled Project Terminal. Lots of fun with the undead and deadly viruses, and letting my science geek out to play.
CD: Do you have plans to write a book in any other another genre?
OS: I do write Contemporary, and have plans for more. I have a Young Adult 3 book series in the works, but don’t expect it finished any time soon. It’s a huge project with a LOT of world building needed. A bit Steampunk, sci-fi, and contemporary. Oi, lots going on.
CD: What is your writing process?
OS: Usually ten to twelve hour stretches with some food in between. I do this for days at a time until my Writing Drones scream for mercy. My Muse is a hard mistress.
CD: What do you believe to be the most important factor in portraying a believable romantic relationship?
OS: You have to have the ups and downs in real life relationships. And you have to have the hero and heroine’s voices separate, when I’m reading I want to know the POV I’m in right off the bat. This is my current challenge, to make unique voices within my characters.
CD: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
OS: Never settle for less than you deserve. It’s my mantra now, and what got me out of my last dead in job.
CD: What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received?
OS: Never stop writing. Write, write, write. And your work is usually worse in your own eyes than it is in another’s, so have confidence in yourself.
CD: Who is your greatest writing influence?
OS: My critique buddies (shout out to Stephanie Beck!) they keep me honest and pushing for more in my work.
CD: What do you enjoy reading?
OS: I love reading non-fiction plus paranormal and Regency romance. And the classics!
CD: What’s your favourite television show? Favourite movie?
OS: OH GOD don’t get me started on my Fangirl fixations! Most favorite show hands down DOCTOR WHO. I live for the show and how MOFFAT!!! will emotionally manipulate us with it. I’m in love with Matt Smith, the actor who plays the current Doctor. All men are compared to the tall, gangly British actor with unconventional looks.
I also fangirl over Supernatural, love me some Winchesters and Castiel I also got a fan group started on Facebook for the SyFy show Lost Girl called Lost Girl Fangroup (original I know, but I’m lousy with titles :p) Look it up if you’d like added.
Movies wise, I’m a mess. I love Jurassic Park II (don’t judge the science geek!) Hidalgo, and Labrynth.
CD: If you were stranded in middle of a Paranormal event (with romantic undertones, of course!), what three things would you wish were with you?
OS: Well if the movies have taught me anything, a good pair of running shoes, a flashlight with fresh batteries, and a cellphone with GPS.
CD: Where can readers find you?
OS: My website, Facebook and Twitter
Blind since childhood, Sierra is satisfied with her success as a relationship therapist. Contacting 1Night Stand is an outlet for her physical needs, or so she tells herself. When she meets Daniel, the chemistry is definitely there, but a single parent with a child has the terrifying potential to disrupt her orderly life.
After losing his wife in a fire three years before that left him terribly scarred, Daniel has focused on raising his young daughter and little else. Meeting Sierra through 1Night Stand is a way to step back into the world. And he definitely can’t deny the instant attraction.
Madame Evangeline has a sweet surprise for them as they discover one another…

“So tell me, what do you see outside?” A fresh rush of desire burned through her. She wanted to extend this moment, the wait its own form of foreplay.
“The lake, with some geese and ducks.”
“You see more than that.”
“Hmm, the moon is out, full and silver. The water reflects it, and the birds swimming on the lake look almost ghostly. Dark trees outline the bank to the north.”
He gently tugged her against his solid body. His lips brushed the outer rim of her ear. “A mated pair of white swans swims close by.”
Hot breath fanned her earlobe and she melted into his arms. A hand stroked down, settling against her lower back. She tipped her head up, anticipating the pressure of his lips against hers. His knuckle nudged beneath her chin.
He removed her sunglasses. “I want to see your brown eyes.”
Her breathing grew shallow, making her lightheaded.
“You’re so beautiful, sweetheart.”
His mouth touched hers and the world fell away.

Romancing the West – give away! #RomancingWest
WELCOME TO THE ROMANCING THE WEST BLOG TOUR
Why do we enjoy writing and reading about the West? What is it about cowboys that is just plain irresistible? Over thirty authors and bloggers tackle these and other questions by explaining why we love Romancing the West.
Hi peeps,
Welcome to the Romancing the West Blog Hop! I’m so pleased to be a part of this hop. Big thanks must go to Sara of Cowboy Charm for hosting.
Western Romances are so much fun to write! I’ve had the extreme good fortune to be part of Western Escape, Decadent Publishing’s Western romance series. All stories are set in the fictional town of Freewill, Wyoming, and I’m so pumped to be part of this wonderful series. My contribution is The Diamond Series, consisting of book 1, ROUGH DIAMOND, and book 2, FOOL’S GOLD.
I had an absolute blast writing these books. There’s something so alluring about the West, especially the Wild West! ROUGH DIAMOND and FOOL’S GOLD are based in part on Deadwood, the fantastic Western TV series starring Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane. Golly gee, but I love that show. There was saloons and gunslingers and horses and cowboys, US marshals and lawlessness and a raft of other amazing and fun Western shenanigans. I loved the themes of the show, of how anyone could carve out a place for themselves in this wild and untamed land. I loved the murkiness of its characters, how honour is a fluid concept, sometimes bowing to necessity. So awesome, and so I had to write my own version!
Christmas in Freewill
Christmas Eve, the Diamond Saloon is empty of its people, and Pearl la Monte has a hankering to retire early. A pounding at the Diamond’s door rids her of such a fool notion. Her irritation rises when she sees the prissy, polite-like Garrett standing outside.
Ethan Garrett has a powerful need to gain succor. When the saloon’s voluptuous redheaded singer scowls at him from the threshold of the Diamond, he doesn’t stop to think on how his ire at her has disappeared. Or how he just wants to spend some time in her company.
When a blizzard storms in, trapping them, will they spend their time arguing or find their irritation for each other disguises something more?

Celebrating the 1st Birthday of TEACH ME!
Hi peeps,
Today is the 1st anniversary of TEACH ME’s release. So exciting! TEACH ME started life in a tour bus in Scotland, where I was bored spitless staring at the back of grey heads. Suddenly, what eventually became the epilogue jumped into my head and I couldn’t rest until I’d written it down.
Here’s a bit about it:
Ever curious, Elizabeth, Viscountess Rocksley, has turned her curiosity to erotic pleasure. Three years a widow, she boldly employs the madam of a brothel for guidance but never had she expected her education to be conducted by a coldly handsome peer of the realm.
To the Earl of Malvern, the erotic tutelage of a skittish widow is little more than sport, however the woman he teaches is far from the mouse he expects. With her sly humor and insistent joy, Elizabeth obliterates all his expectations and he, unwillingly fascinated, can’t prevent his fall.
Each more intrigued than they are willing to admit, Elizabeth and Malvern embark upon a tutelage that will challenge them, change them, come to mean everything to them…until a heartbreaking betrayal threatens to tear them apart forever.
~ Excerpt ~
Moments passed, the Earl’s impassive gaze weighing heavy upon Elizabeth. An overwhelming urge to twist her fingers assaulted her, but what if her fidgeting made him refuse?
He seemed to make some decision. “I shall show you carnal pleasure, madam. As you say, both to receive and to give. However, pregnancy should be avoided at all costs.” His eyes flickered, the first sign of something resembling emotion crossing his face. “I will not marry you, no matter the circumstance.”
Well, of course he wouldn’t. She wouldn’t wed him either. In any event, conception was not a concern for her, not after a marriage that had never yielded—
Good Lord. He spoke of practical application. He spoke of touching and kissing and—Was it warmer of a sudden?
He continued with barely a pause. “Actual penetration will be avoided. While many people extol the virtues of withdrawal, I remain unconvinced. We will discuss methods of contraception during your education, but the most effective method is always avoidance. You are in agreement?”
Still confused but now with cheeks aflame, Elizabeth nodded. In all her life, no one had ever spoken so frankly. This, combined with his matter-of-fact manner and lack of emotion, banished any lingering apprehension and left only the excitement. Glorious, thrilling excitement.
“Excellent.” Stepping close to her once more, he brushed his hand from her neck to her shoulder, the back of his fingers now warm against her skin. “Shall we begin?”

Have you been watching…Spartacus: War of the Damned #starz #tvseries
My love of TV + my blog = Awesome fun sharing times.
Enjoy the shows I think are The Shizz
Spartacus: War of the Damned
So. Peeps. I guess you all know my love for Spartacus. After all, ENSLAVED was inspired by the first season (Spartacus: Blood and Sand). But, even knowing these things, I cannot recommend this show highly enough.
Seriously. NOT HIGHLY ENOUGH.
It’s really difficult for me to articulate why I love it so much. Because I love it, I don’t really want to dissect it. I don’t want to tarnish my enjoyment by picking it to bits and figuring out exactly what it is that makes me react with such love and adulation. But, seeing as it’s you peeps, I’ll give it a go.
Spartacus is a show that doesn’t pull any punches. It builds and builds and builds and then it frakking delivers. Spartacus WILL depict both the noble and the unsavoury aspects of a character. Spartacus WILL destroy them, WILL rip their hearts out and show them the pulsating, bloody mess, and laugh while it does it. Spartacus will, as the last episode of the first series is so deliciously called, Kill Them All.
*happy sigh* God damn, but I love it.
The showrunner and creator, Steven S DeKnight, worked on Buffy and Angel so already I’m pretty fricking envious of him. He’s worked with Joss, peeps! Like, face to face and stuff! He probably has talked with him MORE THAN ONCE.
Anyhoo, I think there’s a definite Joss influence to Steven’s writing. That awesome Joss quote, where he says you don’t give audiences what they want, you give them what they need totally applies to Spartacus. We might wail and scream, tear our hair and ask why? Why did you kill off that character? Why are you going down that path with this character? WHY CAN’T THEY JUST ALL BE HAPPY AND FROLICK IN FIELDS WEARING SCANTY LOINCLOTHS AND GLISTENING OIL*??
But this isn’t what I need. What I need is for Spartacus to be misguided. For Gannicus to drink wine and shag chicks and shake his head at the future he know is coming. For Crassus to be a worthy foe for Spartacus, and to bring about his doom. It’s going to be horrible, but I know this season is going to end spectacularly well.
Thank you, Steven S DeKnight. You are the Shizz.
Check out Spartacus at
Starz website ~ Amazon.com ~ JB Hi-Fi
*This is a very happy place for me, peeps. Don’t believe me? Check out the pretty, pretty people in this show.
NB_Oh, and Spartacus is filmed in New Zealand with a high proportion of Australian actors. You have NO idea how freaked I was when I watched the first episode and heard the accent of my birth spill from these characters’ lips. It was seriously weird, peeps. And then they started with the swearing. Sheesh.

Guest author: C R Moss #guestauthor
Hi peeps!
Today, we have C R Moss stopping by the blog, telling us all about her new release, LOVERS AND THE FIEND. Take it away, CR!
Cassandra Dean: Congratulations on the release of LOVERS AND THE FIEND! Would you tell us a little about it?
C R Moss: This is a story in Evernight Publishing’s Naughty Fairy Tale line. The characters, Jack and Kristina, appeared in my short story – Chasing Miss Kringle – that’s in an Evernight Publishing anthology – Stockings and Suspenders. This is the first of a handful of stories I have planned for the NFT line that revolve around the world started in CMK and Lovers. You don’t have to read the anthology story to read Lovers, but it’d be nice if you did. This story is based off of the tale Beauty and the Beast.
CD: What inspired you to write LOVERS AND THE FIEND?
CRM: As for why I wanted to write LOVERS AND THE FIEND, I wanted to submit something to the Naughty Fairy Tale line and thought that the characters and their jobs that were mentioned in Chasing Miss Kringle would make good material for longer stories.
CD: What did you find easiest/most difficult about writing LOVERS AND THE FIEND?
CRM: The story part flowed pretty easily. It was the more intimate scenes that were a bit more tricky for me.
CD: You write westerns, just like me! How do you go about writing in this genre?
CRM: I write in this particular genre with my writing partner. We draw upon the rugged area outside of the city limits and our love of strong heroes. Doesn’t hurt that I used to ride and had a love of westerns and such when I was younger.
CD: You also write in other genres. Do you find it difficult switching between them?
CRM: Nope. I like to explore different genres when I write. It keeps me open to whatever the characters may want for a particular story.
CD: What is your writing process?
CRM: First thing I normally do is check email, then I’ll do Triberr and check Facebook. Next I’ll get to my writing projects. When I’m working on a story, I’ll reread and do editing on the parts I haven’t edited yet to catch myself up. I’ll make the font a color other than black to keep track of what I’ve already gone through. Then I’ll write the new material. If I’m starting a new project, I do an information dump and outline as much of the story that’s in my head first thing. Then I work off the outline, fleshing out all the ideas and stuff as per above. But then, when I’m really focused on a project, I tend to just plough through it and focus only on getting it done…staying up late writing, getting up early and getting back to the story, eating when I think I can get away from my desk without ruining the flow… The house and social life suffers, but I’m a slave to my art.
CD: What do you believe to be the most important factor in portraying a believable romantic relationship?
CRM: Making the characters as real as possible and being true and honest and as close to real life as possible.
CD: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
CRM: Plan your work and work your plan.
CD: What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received?
CRM: Plant butt in chair and write. (Granted, I’m not always good at taking that advice…)
CD: Who is your greatest writing influence?
CRM: The early works of Stephen King, like The Shining, Pet Sematary, Carrie and Christine, turned me on to writing and started me on writing horror and then in the early 90’s I read Jude Deveraux’s A Knight in Shining Armor which started me on romances and romance writing. Terri Valentine was a big influence, too, since she was my mentor.
CD: What do you enjoy reading?
CRM: Anything really. I have an eclectic taste.
CD: What’s your favourite television show? Favourite movie?
CRM: This is a tough one. When it comes to television, it depends upon where we’re at in the year. At the beginning of the year it was American Horror Story: Asylum. Now it’s Spartacus: War of the Damned. Eventually it’ll be Breaking Bad and Mad Men. I’m into Being Human as well. As for movies, depends upon the genre because I don’t have an all-time favourite.
CD: If you were stranded in the middle of the prairie with only a cowboy to keep you warm, what three things would you wish were with you?
CRM: A Gerber Multi-Plier 400 Tool; a plastic tarp; wax covered matches.
CD: Where can readers find you?
CRM: Find C.R. Moss here ~

Ex-cop turned private investigator, Jack Vorst, learns his elf girlfriend Kristina has been missing for a few days after being invited to an underground vampire club. He, too, is summoned to visit club Hexenringe and is taken captive.
Jack finds Kristina bound and gagged in a human sized bird cage. They’re both thrust into a kinky world at the hands of Kol, the club owner. Kol, a vampiric beast, shifts into human form to be with Jack and Kristina and needs them to remember their pasts and to love him so he can return to what he used to be.
Can Kol make the pair fall in love with him despite his current situation and the fact he’s keeping them captive or will they leave, making it too late for him to change all their fates?
Warning: ménage a trios, M/M, bondage, anal sex, sex toys, public exhibition
~ Excerpt ~
A peek into the beginning of the story…
Chapter One
I have your woman. A nice piece of ass she is, too. She tells me you’re not bad yourself. I would love for you to join us later. A car will be waiting for you outside your office at noon today where my assistant will fill you in on some details. If you know what’s good for you and your gal, you’ll take advantage of this invitation. See you soon. ~ Kol Ainmire
Jack Vorst’s temper went full tilt within a second. His blood pounded hard through his head and body. He’d told Kristina to be careful when she went out on her cases, but it seemed she still had gotten herself in trouble. Not good.
“Vic! Get in here!” Trying to check and rein in his anger before he popped a vessel, Jack grabbed the letter he’d found on his desk while going through a stack of mail and a couple of case files. The paper crinkled within his one clenched hand, and the envelope it’d come in bunched up in his other.
He kept his gaze downcast, ground his teeth. No sense in looking at the tan colored walls that were littered with stenciling in his office and be more irritated than he already was. The design and colors reminded him of the Native American beaded belts people sold at roadside stands.
Vic’s wife, Malory, who worked in the adjoining office suites, loved her southwestern motifs. All the rooms for both divisions of the business were decorated to represent Arizona and New Mexico. The decorating style with too many colors and crazy patterns made his head swim, gave him a headache. He hated headaches.
Staring at the crumpled papers in his hands, he sighed. Truth be told, Kristina’s whereabouts and her lack of checking in for several days only concerned him a little. She was able to take care of herself, and he trusted her. He loved her, wanted her to be safe, so of course he worried some. But being an elf gave her an advantage that mere humans didn’t have—the ability to escape situations by simply disappearing and reappearing elsewhere.
Except this time.
