We left Earth long after the evacuation. No one would come ever again to save those left on the severely polluted planet. The original departure had happened so long ago that I had not yet been born, even though Believers tried to make all of us think that it was only a decade earlier.
Eleven years have passed since the day Mother Ship and her escorts escaped Earth. I am now sixteen, ready to step up for my training, but still a year or so exists before I can do that. All that is my responsibility these days is to do the best job possible furnishing sustenance for those who live on the ships, and keep an eye out for Believers.

BD’s ever present suspicious mind latches onto one thing when the advance team for Galactic Carnival arrives to begin preparations for a weeklong visit. The ringmaster looks familiar, but the man swears that he has never been to Canoples Station before. Even worse, children five and under are disappearing. A bit of investigating on BD’s part clues him in to the fact this has happened on every station Space Dodger Space Circus has visited so far. He’s determined to uncover the true identity of the ringmaster and solve the mystery of the missing children, but at what cost. Is BD willing to lose his lifelong friends to solve this case? Will they prove Jenna Rock, Wade’s girlfriend, isn’t involved?

The normal sounds of the promenade seem wrong. I have a sensation of impending doom, much like the moments before the space pirates showed up. The desire to leap into action is very strong, so much so that I’m literally leaning forward with my fists clenched at my side.
“Easy,” Carl murmurs. “You don’t know for sure it’s him.”
Of course, I know this man we’re watching is our quarry. How can I not know that? Not that his appearance is anywhere close to his daughter, who right now is aboard Fomalhaut for a very long stay. Erin Markus did lead Spacers Rule, a galaxy wide ring of splifters, but she wasn’t in charge.
Oh, no, she was far from in charge of those thieves. The person with that responsibility has just entered Canoples Station and is talking with none other than our less than ethical governor, but I have no definitive way of proving that.

In the two weeks since BD and his group of intrepid investigators took on the space pirates and aided in incarcerating them on the prison barge, Fomalhaut, the station has turned against them. Now, they have to prove they have exactly what it takes to compete as security consultants on the new industrial stations under construction, stop spacers rule from stealing anything not bolted down. Then there's the little matter of contaminated codos and re-kats, and Missy. Oh, yes, Missy is still around, and she's four now, and determined to be a junior BD.

Black words on the creamy parchment in her hand numbed Susannah Tilotsen. Shivers racked her spine; fear deadened her fingertips. Her grip loosened and the document fluttered to her feet. The forty-something man in front of her caressed his silver-shot sable hair before spreading his hands. She watched the public façade take over as the benevolent leader of a fractious, crumbling galaxy smiled. She knew better. His duplicitous expression sent chills up her spine.
She looked at the settlement she was reporting on to a galaxy awaiting a solution for a growing problem. The gray on gray buildings depressed her. The same hue was repeated in the walkways and latticed worked fences enclosing the twelve living areas. The children who soon call this place home would have no relief from the depressing shades of grey.
“Do you like our solution for incorrigible children?” he asked. “This is the best resolution for the action you reporters have demanded.”

The fear returns with my first missed menstrual cycle, a little over three months ago. Yet again, I am pregnant. Half a dozen times, the child growing within me never made it fully through the second month. That information is not in my medical records, because I never told anyone about it, not even Nicholas, my beloved husband. The reason behind those horrific decisions is our first child, a girl we were going to call April Melina, was lost at almost seven months. The hardest part of that miscarriage is that she stopped moving nearly five weeks before the doctor we were assigned in Nevada was certain she was growing well and I was worrying about nothing.
I can’t do this again. I really can’t go through this again.
