I SEE BAD PEOPLE

I learned from Cherry Adair and other best-selling writers about how to plan backwards from the villain in the novel. Check out my Savvy Author entry: http://www.savvyauthors.com/vb/conten... Tell me what you think of villain-centered planning for novels! Rolynn

CINNAMON AS AN APHRODISIAC

The Wild Rose Press Halloween Hop

Halloween, Fall, Thanksgiving, cool evenings, flames dancing in the fireplace, the smell of cinnamon and apples wafting through the air.  Way too tame a scene for a group of romance writers, you say?  Then you must not know that cinnamon is an aphrodisiac.

Yup.  I’ve heard that men favor the smell of cinnamon over most other scents.  Time to whip up some French toast for breakfast and make sure we’ve got a cinnamon cake on hand for dessert. You say you’ve got some cinnamon oil?  I’ll leave it to you to find out how to use that.  How come no one makes a cinnamon perfume?  Just asking.

TELL ME YOUR FAVORITE SCENT and I’ll pick a random responder to win a tote from Hawaii and a few other goodies!

I looked for a good recipe for cinnamon cake and found it on “Life’s Smorgasbord,” a blog.

Easy Cinnamon Nectarine Cake

adapted from Bon Appétit, August 2005

Makes 8 servings

1/2 cup (113g) butter, slightly softened (or room temperature)

3/4 cup sugar

2 large eggs

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1 teaspoons vanilla essence

1 1/4 cups self-rising flour

5 medium nectarines (about 1 3/4 pounds), halved, each half cut into 4 slices

2-3 tablespoons caster (superfine) sugar

3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 180°C / 350°F. Butter & line a 9-inch-diameter springform pan.

Using electric mixer, beat 1/2 cup butter in large bowl until creamy and fluffy. Add 3/4 cup sugar and beat until sugar is well-blended. Beat in eggs 1 at a time, then lemon juice and vanilla essence. Beat in flour (be careful here, I got some on my clothes) until incorporated (smooth) but do not over mix it. Spread batter evenly in prepared pan. The mixture will be thick.

Arrange enough nectarine slices atop batter in concentric circles to cover completely; press lightly to adhere. Mix cinnamon and 2-3 tablespoons of caster sugar (depending on how sweet/tart your fruits are) in small bowl. Sprinkle over cake (I used a mini-sieve to get an even spread).

Bake until cake is golden brown, about 1 hour (50 minutes for plums or smaller fruits). Cut around cake to loosen; remove pan sides. Serve cake slightly warm or at room temperature. Plain, with ice cream or whipped cream.

HEY! LAST RESORT IS THE TITLE OF MY NOVEL!

Have you seen the new TV series, LAST RESORT? I’m mulling over the strangeness of the buzz about the program, because my novel, LAST RESORT released in June of 2011 without much buzz. My novel is a thriller set in a resort in the isolated reaches of British Columbia. Terrorism and sabotage are plot shakers and the ocean is a factor, but sport boats rather than submarines color this fishing resort world. I picked the title, LAST RESORT, five years ago. I wonder how long ago the TV version of LAST RESORT determined its title? You may not be surprised to know the series didn’t check with me to ask if it was okay to use my title. I understand that.

Now, I might watch the series because we ‘share’ a title. Will the series producers and actors read my book for the same reason? Oh well. I say good luck to all story-makers. I’m happy with my title and my page-turner novel and I hope the TV series and viewers are similarly pleased with their production. Here’s to all writers who capture an audience of readers or viewers!

SERIAL KILLER CRAB

We’ve enjoyed another great boating season… a couple of mishaps that added to our bill when we had the boat hauled out recently. Our generator quit on us at a convenient time, too. Add more bucks on the bill for that repair. I say these things only to show you how ‘normal’ our boating season was. Now, the Serial Killer Crab? THAT was unusual. See, Steve and I have been working on a way to save live Dungeness Crab, to eat later…or to provide a feast for guests. We caught our limit of 10 male, big crabs and took great care to provide fresh salt water for them when we were underway and placing them underwater in their ‘crab condo’ when we moored or anchored. But we hadn’t counted on a serial killer crab, the biggest fellow in the bunch. Every night he’d de-claw yet another cellmate; he eviscerated one more fellow. In a week’s time, we were down to three crab. Imagine the satisfaction we took in eating that turkey serial killer crab? He was delicious!

How and Why Boaters Group Up

Steve started a blog three years ago: http://steveandrolynn.blogspot.com/

His plan was to explain what it takes to cruise for months at a time in our 42 foot Kady-Krogen, with a special focus on our long journey to Alaska and back in 2011.  We’re happy you enjoy the blog and when you asked us to keep up with the entries even though we’re visiting many of the same spots we talked about in 2010, we are pleased to oblige.  Fact is, our readers have it right.  Every boating trip is a brand new experience…boat issues, changes in marinas, new friends and a plethora of unusual events.  Steve will continue to comment on his interest areas steveandrolynn.blogspot, while I throw in my two cents on my blog: http://blog.rolynnanderson.com/

You’ll get two perspectives…Steve often speaks of the technological, historical and chronological; I tend to dwell on the oddities, the hysterical and the out-of-order stuff.  For instance, tonight at the marina happy hour, I met three women in their second marriages…all to pilots…reminding me that the amount of pilots and physicians captaining boats is astounding.

Commonalities in boating is my subject.  Steve and I usually make fast friendships with people who own boats the same make as ours-a Kady-Krogen (see picture).  Even tighter is our tie to owners of 42 foot Krogens, the size of INTREPID.  Boaters with single diesel engines have more to say to others with the same power plan.  INTREPID has a Ford-Lehman engine…you guessed, it: deeper chats with those folks than the ones who own some other engine.

Advance that concept: we get along well with those cruising a similar speed to ours.  When we owned a twin-screw, gas-powered Tollycraft, sailboaters gave us the finger as we raced by them at 13 knots.  Today, in our round-bottomed sloooooow trawler, sailors send us friendly waves as we chug past at 7.5 knots to their 6.5 knot speed.

Of course, this affinity pattern is common in any social structure, a matter of not so much keeping-up-with-the-Joneses as sticking-with-the-Joneses.  All in all, it’s a comfortable place to be.  When boaters have so much in common, friendships gain a head start, and in no time at all, you’ve got a buddy with a boat similar to yours, and because you cruise at the same speed, and have a similar draft/beam, might like to explore a new bay with you.  More fun.  Safer.

As I think of it, maybe this ‘grouping together,’ is more of a preservation technique than a ‘I hang with boaters like me,’ thing.  Perhaps, down deep we’re keeping up same-boat relationships, because one day, when INTREPID is in trouble, it would behoove us to have a similar boat around to borrow a much-needed part.  Will they help?  Absolutely.  Because another day, when their boat founders, we’ll have a part they need.

INTREPID – Summer of 2012

NTREPID leaves the dock today at high noon. We’ll keep up on our blog and “Spot” as we go. Last year’s Alaska trip is still up on the blog; we’ll begin talking about this year’s journey in a few days. This year we’ll explore up to the Alaska border. http://steveandrolynn.blogspot.com/20...
