What Kick-Starts an Author to Write a New Book?

As I write this entry, I’m waiting for the airport shuttle to pick up my husband and me. We’re leaving San Miguel De Allende (SMA) after 34 days in the city. We rented a magnificent VRBO about four long blocks away from the old city center. The weather was extraordinary, the people friendly, the shopping, sightseeing, and food, remarkable.Since I’m an author who writes Mystery/Suspense Spiked with Romance and Exotic Settings, you’re probably wondering how I’ll approach my novel set in SMA. Well, I’m wondering, too! My process is far from linear; I don’t even know if I can explain it.For CÉZANNE’S GHOST, which takes place in Aix en Provence, losing a hard drive on a French train pushed me to write a short story about the event. On another occasion, I watched a woman from my train window as my car took on passengers. For three minutes I observed her. Something about her gold-banded hat cowboy hat set atop shoulder-length blond hair got my creative juices going and I didn’t stop until I had Aline’s story told. Here are a few of the interesting aspects of SMA that might be juicy:1. I met a free-lance concierge who helps Americans plan their visits to SMA and surrounding sites. Good job for a main character, no?2. There’s a mural of a giant bat that menaced the SMA townspeople. Worthy of consideration. Where did that bat come from and is he still around?3. The Day of the Dead-1st day- honors dead children; The Day of the Dead-2nd day- honors children and everyone else. Each family puts up a cheerful shrine to celebrate the dead. I wonder why Americans don’t do that?Day of the dead shrine, cemetery4. This is the city of ‘fallen women.’ The roads are cobblestone and the sidewalks are narrow and uneven. You can’t gawk and walk at the same time…or you’ll fall. Do women fall more often than men?5. People carry around eggs in bags…not always a dozen. Do they break more eggs than ‘carton’ people, overtime?6. We must apply biocide to fruits and vegetables here in SMA before we eat/peel them. Even melons have to be soaked for twenty minutes. I’d like to get to the bottom of who is soaking what.7. Houses are inside-out here. Gardens are within the walls of the home…there are four gardens in this three floor home. At least one fountain per house! We had two!8. Merchants are allowed to yell about their products on speaker from their cars.9. Firecrackers go off at any time of the day or night.10. The church bells ring often, multiple times a day and rarely on the hour/half hour. We have yet to understand their rhythms.11. Families are important in SMA; children are treasured.12. On a warm day (say, 76 degrees) many Mexicans are dress as if it’s 20 degrees cooler.13. Mexicans don’t wear shorts…tourist do. What do we think about that?14. My brother and I had our faces painted; I decorated a hat (Catrina style), and marched with other revelers the evening of the Day of the Dead. What if a woman, face painted, met a man, also with face painted…and…My brother and me with faces painted15. Homes add stories here …the mirador, a roofed, no-walls structure at the top of the house has a view and an airy atmosphere for entertaining friends and family. Why don’t American build miradors? Here’s what a mirador looks like and one portion of our 360 degree viewView from our miradorSo I’ve shown you a few pictures and thrown a few ideas in the air. I have no idea what I’ll write about SMA, but it will be: Mystery/Suspense Spiked with Romance and Exotic Settings.Stay tuned. Welcome to my virgin pre-order adventure!

Welcome to my virgin pre-order adventure! ‘They’ tell me if I have some fans, a healthy list of backlist books and a history of putting out a certain number of books per year, I can make pre-ordering work. This is my test case.To thank you for putting your money on the line, you’ll pay $3.99 instead of $4.99 if you pre-order before my Dec. 4 release day!FIRE IS NICE, is my ninth novel with my most challenging character to date. Hang on to your preconceived notions!FBI trained, Sable Chisholm, suffered a permanent brain injury while on duty. A poisoning by carbon monoxide affected her fear center, the amygdala. After yearlong therapy and burnt bridges on the force in San Francisco, she’s assigned to Sequoia National Park to hunt down poachers.A ranger with no fear, searching for bone and truffle thieves. Pitted against vicious criminals, who will stop at nothing…even murder. And a summer staff of rangers unready for crime on this scale. With her burro, Wheezer and her miniature pig, Chopper.Partnered with a brilliant Park numbers guy who’s best friends with his computer and four monitors. Carter Glass, a recluse with the bearded good looks of a country music star. This story has so many confounding elements, my brain was close to exploding as I wrote it. But I think I caught the drama, the romance, the danger, the animals, a damaged fearless woman, and an almost agoraphobic statistical whiz…just right. You tell me!And please, do pre-order to ensure a dive into the ranger-world of Sable Chisholm and Carter Glass. Thanks! HERE COMES THE IND’SCRIBE CONFERENCE!

In a month, I’ll be attending the InD'Scribe Conference in Burbank, CA (October 4-7). This year’s MYSTERY theme is perfect for my genre. I’m thrilled my novel, BAD LIES, is competing with five other authors for the RONE award in the Suspense/Thriller category! While I’m biting my nails over the RONE, I’m organizing a contest for readers attending the conference. I’ve gathered $5 each from author at the Giant Book Signing event, and we’re enticing readers to come to our tables to get gifts and author signatures. Readers who get signatures from at least 12 authors have the chance to win a $100 Amazon card. Most exciting of all,I'm presenting with the amazing Mara Purl...about authors stepping up their branding platforms.Stepping Up!Our premise is: “If you don’t know your author platform, how will your readers find you?”"In this workshop, we’ll help a writer add layers to her unique brand so she can hone in on who reads her books and why. We’ll ask her to articulate core elements such as: voice, goals/passion, themes, and her work history. She will discover the benefits she offers readers as well as what, in her work, appeals to them. Next we’ll help her present her platform on social media, in book signings and in all her promotional materials…so she sells more books!"Come join us! There’s still time for you to sign up for the conference at: https://www.indscribe.com

Backstory: Consider it Gone by Rolynn Anderson

Let the Reader Fill in the BlanksReaders as well as folks who go to the movies are smart and like solving puzzles. I wonder if we give our novel ‘audiences’ enough credit for their intelligence and their enjoyment in filling in blanks themselves. Bottom line, do we provide too much backstory?I raise this question after seeing the film, ‘Without a Trace,’ last night. Here’s the blurb on the award-winning movie:“Will (Ben Foster) and his teenage daughter, Tom (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie), have lived off the grid for years in the forests of Portland, Oregon. When their idyllic life is shattered, both are put into social services. After clashing with their new surroundings, Will and Tom set off on a harrowing journey back to their wild homeland. The film is directed by Debra Granik from a script adapted by Granik and Anne Rosellini.”Since the film has no soundtrack and is spare in dialogue, with a stunning state park in Oregon as the main character, the audience must watch the actions of Will and his daughter, Tom, to understand their relationship. Viewers wonder why Will chose to live, illegally, in the woods. Hiding. Homeless. Hungry. Healthy? Happy? We know for certain Will has to live an isolated life, but we don’t know exactly why. Viewers get no information about the absent mother or how long the father has been sole caregiver. Critical elements of child-raising in such unusual circumstances are not explained. When the rangers and social workers take over Will and Tom’s care, even the questions they ask the father and daughter rarely get answered fully. With the slightest of backstory, this movie is a success. How can that be?We authors go to great lengths to chart every aspect of our characters’ personalities, even to tracking parent issues and growing-up events that define our heroes and heroines as adults. Villains and secondary characters get backgrounds, too, in order to craft them as believable and vital to the storyline. I up the ante with every book, thinking that deep is better and the reader will find my novel wanting unless every question about a character is answered by the end of the story (without info-dumping, of course). In my effort to be professional, thorough, and rational in my craft, have I dumbed down my reader? My enjoyment of filling in the blanks in the movie convinced me to rethink the concept of backstory. Director Debra Granik gave me power to see what I wanted to see in the text; I appreciate her faith in me to round out the plot and characters on my own.I want to consider ‘spare,’ and imagine a reader who would rather insert her own interpretation than have me lead her to mine. How about you?

My July Shout-Out to Author Samaritans

For the summer months, I’m celebrating the individuals who helped me create my stories.Without live experts to advise me, I’d be gleaning from Google, hopeful I could sort out fact from fiction, desperate for depth and color. I depend on Author Samaritans, my blessed primary sources, for enriching my novels with authenticity. The smiling man you see in the picture below is Ward Eldredge, curator at Sequoia National Park since 1998. He spent a couple precious hours with me, describing the politics, goals, and challenges our parks face for the next decade. He is as nice a man as his picture conveys, bright, dedicated, and knowledgeable. I also spoke to some of his colleagues, each offering valuable insight into the workings of Sequoia in particular as well as park management nationwide.Full Disclosure: My brother, an historian, who worked with Ward on the early history of African American troops guarding our national parks, provided an entrée to my visit with Curator Eldredge.Am I the luckiest author in the world with experts like Ward, taking the time to speak to me about a setting and an organization I’d barely begun to understand? My questions were rudimentary, based on too little knowledge, but Ward and his colleagues patiently explained their world to help me lend authenticity to the characters, setting, and plot in FIRE IS NICE.Ward and his co-workers are examples of Author Samaritans, people willing to lend expertise to writers, without any expectation of reward, even though they’re aware I could misuse or twist the detail they provide. I write fiction, so by nature, I play fast and lose with facts. As my book hits Amazon, I cross my fingers, hoping all my blessed Samaritans will be happy they shared. Thanks to Ward and many others, when you read FIRE IS NICE (out in October, 2018), a murder mystery that takes place in Sequoia National Park, you’ll will find yourself immersed in a real-life location under believable circumstances. If I provide you with a clear, interesting window into Sequoia’s world, I’ll consider my task half done. Should you be mesmerized by the people, the intrigue, and the extraordinary life in this park, I’ll be a happy author.Eight Suspense Novels Spiked with Romance and Exotic Settingshttps://www.rolynnanderson.comhttps://www.amazon.com/Rolynn-Anderson

COUNTDOWN TO A BOOK SIGNING IN ALASKA by Rolynn Anderson

My buddy, Vonnie Davis, gave me this idea when she offered to be a stowaway on INTREPID‘s cruise to Alaska.  I said to myself: Why not offer a boat trip to all my friends?  I’ve got two extra bunk beds in the second cabin and two heads (bathrooms).  Plenty of food and wine aboard.  We just installed two solar panels so we have battery power to spare.  We watch the weather carefully and pick the calmest days to cross the most dangerous seas, so you have nothing to fear.

Intrepid at blue mouse

But we’re slow.   7.5 knots is our normal cruising speed, about 8.5 miles per hour.  Single diesel engine moving 40,000 pounds of INTREPID  through the salt water.   Yup, lots of time to relax, see dolphins, eagles, whales, sea birds…and gorgeous scenery.

We’re heading to Petersburg, Alaska for three important reasons.  #1 It’s a lovely fishing town; #2 It’s the setting for my novel, LIE CATCHERS; #3 I’m doing a book signing at the Sing Lee Alley Bookstore on June 5th from 1:00-3:00 p.m.

I’d love a big crowd at my book signing, and if I bring a boatload of friends, we’ll make it a special occasion.

Ready to sign on?  All you have to do is say you want to crew on this virtual cruise and tell me something special you’d like to see or do on this trip.  Hurry and jump on.  I’ll be pouring wine for a light lunch soon…I hope you can join us.

One crew member, chosen at random will win a PDF of one of my four novels…choice is yours.  That lucky person will also receive a waterproof mini-book, your very own cruise journal.

Welcome Aboard!  Rolynn

WRITING ABOUT WHAT WE DON’T KNOW by Rolynn Anderson

Here’s how the story emerged.  It’s 2011 and we’re cruising from Washington State to Alaska on our trawler, Intrepid (see picture below).  Never have we covered that distance, much less navigated such difficult stretches of water.

Intrepid at blue mouse

We arrived in Petersburg, Alaska, all the strangeness of a scary virgin voyage replaced by our fascination for this charming fishing town.  Settled first by Tlingit and Haida tribes, the Norwegians showed up in the early 1900′s.  Chinese workers soon arrived to gut and cut-up fish caught by the Norwegians.

So, I knew nothing about Petersburg, its amazing history, and the fishing industry.  What’s more, Petersburg came with an unsolved crime from 1932.  Could I solve that murder and entwine it with a recent murder…which means I’m writing a book that is more mystery than suspense, another leap for me?  Challenging to compose, but fun.

Have you tackled the unfamiliar in one of your novels?  How did it go for you?

Here is LIE CATCHERS:

Two unsolved murders will tear apart an Alaska fishing town unless a writer and a government agent reveal their secret obsessions.

Treasury agent Parker Browne is working undercover in Petersburg, Alaska to investigate a money scam and a murder. His prime suspect, Liv Hanson, is a freelance writer struggling to save her family’s business. Free spirited, full of life, and with a talent for catching liars, she fascinates Parker.

Trying to prove she’s a legitimate writer who cares about Petersburg’s issues, Liv pens a series of newspaper articles about an old, unsolved murder. When her cold case ties in with Parker’s investigation, bullets start to fly.

Parker understands money trails, and Liv knows the town residents. But he gave up on love two years ago, and she trusts no one, especially with her carefully guarded secret. If they mesh their skills to find the killers, will they survive the fallout?

I wrote a review of James’ compelling story on Amazon:

“The coziness of SUMMERTIME DREAM comes from family loyalties in small town America. Margie is healing from physical and mental turmoil, seeking solace with her hometown family and friends. An appealing big-city guy, Christopher, comes to town to renovate an inherited home. Margie loves the old house and steps in to help him prepare it for sale, puzzled by the lives of the families who used to live there. The mystery of the house is revealed as Margie and Christopher’s romance sizzles, but their conflict over lifestyle spikes, as well. The question remains: how much can a person sacrifice and still be true to oneself?”

I was entranced by James’ picture of small town life.  I grew up an Army brat, and although most Army posts were small communities, my family rarely spent more than two years in any one city or country.  What would it be like to spend ALL my growing-up years in a small town where I knew the history of every single person, and when I needed comfort, I COULD go home again?  Not only did I yearn to be Margie, in SUMMERTIME DREAM, but I wanted to meet the hunky Christopher AND adopt Margie’s brothers!  Better yet, James’ story included a home makeover and a nagging mystery about a certain family (all towns seem to come with those).  Thanks, for the great read, Babette James!

This is Summertime Dream:

An unexpected inheritance brings business consultant Christopher Gordon from Los Angeles to quaint Falk’s Bend. He’s carved a week from his demanding schedule to list his great-grandparents’ house for sale and explore his roots. However, disturbing family secrets and the sweet temptation of writer Margie Olsson derail his plans, challenging him to seize the elusive dream missing from his hectic life— love.

A recent brush with death shook Margie’s life, but not her dreams and she’s ready to move forward. Only, standing up to her loving, over-protective family isn’t easy. Helping Christopher explore the derelict mansion and unravel his grandmother’s mysterious past should be a harmless fun taste of independence. But when her experimental summer fling ignites into unexpected love, how can her small town dreams work with his big city life?

The Fourth of July is over, but for these summer lovers

 the fireworks have just begun.

Excerpt:

Margie touched his shoulder and had him turn away from the mess to focus on the view toward the river.

Here the picturesque natural beauty of the property began: the land sloped gently down past the ancient summer house and purple martin houses to the reedy pond where a duck flew in and landed with a quack, and stretched on through weedy tangles of wild blackberry and rogue saplings to the ancient apple and plum trees sagging with unripe fruit, and beyond to the river invisible in the distance, marking where the Engberg’s farm began on the far bank.

Appreciation softened his tense face.

“Beautiful, isn’t it? I fell so in love with this place when I was little and dreamed I’d live in a house like this someday.” Margie laughed. “Of course, in my dreams it was a bit less rundown.”

“I’d imagine so. Interested in buying?”

“Oh, if only I could, I would in an instant. I’m sure the property alone is worth far more than I can afford. It’s a huge piece of land. And the repairs and restoration…” Longing swelled. She sighed. Someone else would buy and live in her dream home.

Quiet fell between them for a while. Bees buzzed in the clover. Birds sang, chirped, and flitted. A hummingbird whizzed past. Two more ducks joined the first amid quiet bickering quacks. Dandelion fluff drifted by on an unfelt breeze.

A truck rattled down the lane, breaking the moment.

“Suppose we ought to head back…” Christopher turned, so close their arms brushed, but instead of retreating, he hesitated. Their eyes locked. Where dismay and frustration had filled his green eyes, want simmered. The heavy air electrified.

You need a change.

On a surge of bewildering crazy courage, she stretched up and kissed him. The brief brush of lips to lips left her shaken and her heart pounding, like she had just come up for air.

His eyes widened in his serious, craggy face.

No, oh, no. Blowing out a unsteady breath, she pressed a hand to her stomach. She’d carried her day’s adventure one impetuous step too far. Her heroines were the daring part of her. She’d never even kissed on a first date before, and this wasn’t even a date.

Before the apology fluttering in her mind could break free, he cupped her cheek and touched his mouth down on hers.

Thinking faded as feeling soared. His gentle touch sweet and fascinating, his lips warm and firm played over hers, unhurried in his caresses and enticing brushes. He laced his fingers into her hair, cradling her head in his hand. He tenderly nipped her lip and licked at her mouth, inviting her rather than taking.

She sighed, delighting in this lovely, reckless rush. Yes. Yes. Yes. Forget that they had just met.

She could want again.

Gripping his shoulder, she accepted the heady invitation, and the kiss deepened into perfect.

Come fall in love at the river:

Good thing this suspense writer lived thirty years in rainy Seattle and cruises in her trawler along the wet Inside Passage.  In the moist conditions of the Pacific Northwest, we use waterproof notebooks made by the Rite in the Rain company http://www.riteintherain.com.   When my story, set in Petersburg, Alaska, demanded a character found dead in the water with an intact tablet in his pocket, I knew how to make the conceit work.

More fun was connecting with the generous folks at Rite in the Rain. Would they work with me on a promo mini-book?  ”Yes!” was their enthusiastic response. I’m using my tablets as giveaways and gifts at book signings.  My readers are awestruck by the unique product and tickled with their gift.

Writing/marketing can be a lonely and frustrating business, but with Rite in the Rain as a sidekick, I’m having fun promoting LIE CATCHERS.  I thank Todd Silver and the helpful staff at Rite in the Rain for their partnership!

In honor of this partnership and the fact that LIE CATCHERS is free from February 11-15, I’d like to give away some free mini-notebooks.  I’ll pick out three commenters at random, who give me their e-mail addresses.  I’ll  send each a mini Rite in the Rain notebook.

LieCatchers_w7909_300

When I give an enthusiastic review of a novel, and give it a 4, I call

that a great rating and a positive response. I’m curious. What does

a 4 mean to you? Find out on http://rosesofprose.blogspot.com/ Rolynn
