Celestial Seduction up for Book-a-Day Giveaway at The Romance Studio & Read Chapter One

Stop over at Daily Dose of Decadence to learn more about Frey, the hero from Celestial Seduction. He's not a vampire, werewolf, or a shifter. He's an alien.

Also today, my debut novella Celestial Seduction is up for the Book-A-Day Giveaway at The Romance Studio. Stop by for your chance to win a copy:

http://theromancestudio.com/bad_form.php

I've also posted chapter one for your reading pleasure.

Blurb:

At the end of his obligated commitment to the Space Service, Frey Berger decides to stay on Earth to further experience human emotions rather than return to Ginnun where his intended has already mated with another. Looking for real love and someone to accept him for what he is, Frey enlists in Madame Evangeline's popular dating service. Although he does not understand the concept of a one-night stand, he hopes to find his perfect mate.

Carrie Cooper's husband divorced her for someone who could provide him with children, leaving her with little self-confidence and no desire to let a man hurt her again. Her best friend convinces her to join a dating service, claiming Carrie needs to get laid, while not winding up with a broken heart since her date requires no commitment after the night is over.

Although several misunderstandings nearly derail them before the date has even begun, Carrie and Frey end up becoming closer than they ever believed possible. Still, Frey will need to convince Carrie that her perfect mate isn't human at all, and that one night can lead to a forever love.

Chapter One:

"What do you mean, you want to stay?"

Frey balled his fists and watched the Mission Commander's face turn from blue to purple to red. But he refused to step onto the ship. "Exactly that. I don't want to return to Ginnun. I've spent one rotation around the sun here, established myself in their culture, and lived like one of them. And I'll continue to do so. This is my home now."

"One rotation is hardly long enough to call this place home. Besides, you've sworn your life to the Space Service." As his MC's eyes hardened further, Frey noticed all the wrinkles in the man's once again blue face. His white hair stood up straight on an oversized head. If he remained with the Space Service, the stress of the job would age him exactly the same way.

"This is my last mission. I'll be discharged when I return." Frey wouldn't receive any compensation for this mission, but Space Service credits were of no use on Earth.

"The only way to get out of the Service is to apply for mating. Won't Tandee be waiting for your return?"

His stomach clenched upon hearing her name. "On the day we left, she confessed to already mating with Brand, my supposed best friend."

The Commander only raised his eyebrow. Frey didn't expect any compassion from him. "Ouch! So that's why you failed to keep your emotions in check on the trip to Earth."

He looked away. Even after his time on this planet, the memory of that day still stung. She'd flaunted her admission without a hint of regret.

"There are many other females on Ginnun who would take you as a mate."

Frey looked back to the Mission Commander and shook his head. "I don't want an emotionless relationship. When I choose a mate, I need to want to be with her. I want a mate for more than just procreation. I want to love."

"Emotions just get in the way of your life." His MC slammed his fist against the ship. "You're our best field informant! If you're leaving the Service, you could easily find yourself on the High Council. You don't want to throw away your future for the overly sensitive women here on Earth."

"It's not just the women. I have friends here, not just acquaintances, as everyone is to me on Ginnun." Many people he'd trusted on Ginnun wound up stabbing him in the back, as in his best friend who slept with his intended without any guilt. Returning to a planet of long-dead emotions held no appeal after living on Earth. He refused to hide his feelings again, and there were so many more he wanted to experience.

The Mission Commander signaled to the pilot to start the engines. "Stop this nonsense and get on the ship."

"No." He grabbed his sack and without remorse, turned his back on his Ginnunian heritage.

REB: More great reads from Decadent Publishing!

Here are some more great reads from Decadent Publishing that I recently read:

Sweet Irish Kiss by JoAnne Kenrick

Shaun Bell, a divorced workaholic, spends all his time tending bar in his Irish Pub. He's ready to love again, but the women who visit his bar are only after his infamous Irish cocktails. At the advice of his darts team, over a tanker or two of Beamish, he applies to 1Night Stand to get back into the swing of things and enjoy the company of a woman specially selected for him by Madame Evangeline.

Rachel Taylor has issues. Her father broke her mother's heart with his cheating and Rachel swore never to let that happen to her, but one ruined relationship after another and she's realized she's got to get over being closed off to men. Perhaps a one-night stand is just the baby step she needs to begin to build trust again.

A match seemingly made in heaven…until morning rolls around and Shaun can't bring himself to say good-bye. Can he win her over with his secret weapon, a Sweet Irish Kiss, or is Rachel still too scared to love?

Just Gotta Say by Laura Kaye

Callie Davis stumbles upon two of her three male roommates in a surprising, molten-hot midnight tryst and discovers a side of herself she never knew existed. Desire to play with them grips her, and she can't stop fantasizing about having multiple men, particularly her three long-time best friends.

Callie is thrilled when a guys' night out gives her the perfect opportunity to recreate her fantasy, with the help of a threesome porn video and a bag of sex toys. That is, until Lucas, Jack and Noah return early and catch her in the act. More than anything, the guys want to make her fantasy come true. But Callie has a secret, and she can't help wondering if being with all three men will risk the future she's always wanted with one of them.

As three strong sets of hands caress and undress her, Callie surrenders to desire, because sometimes you just gotta say…yes.

Return to the Sea by Rebecca Royce

The clock is ticking for Laneigh. Banished from the ocean ten years earlier, Laneigh is shocked to discover all the Mer people living on dry land die within a decade of leaving the sea. With her life ending, she boards a cruise ship, intent on challenging the Mer who destroyed her life. She doesn't expect him to save her—but she has a request she is desperate he honor.

Hearing Laneigh's name on the wind, Sylarus, son of the Mer king, is powerless to stop himself from seeing her. Defying his father's edict, he rushes to meet the woman he's desired his whole life. But when he learns of her impending death, something shifts deep inside Sylarus. He cannot—will not—let her die.

Sylarus and Laneigh face tremendous odds to be together. In the end, they will either change Mer society forever or perish in the attempt. Can true love forgive after a decade of betrayals?

Book Review: Walking the Edge (Corpus Brides #1) by Zee Monodee

Walking the Edge (Corpus Brides book 1) by Zee Monodee

Publication date: June 30, 2011 by Noble Romance

Action/Adventure, Contemporary, Drug use, Espionage, Mystery, Romance, Second Chances

from Goodreads:

The next step might be the last…

A woman without a past

Left amnesiac after an accident, Amelia Jamison struggles as her instincts slowly rise from the depths of oblivion, leading her to question her life as the wife of a cold, manipulating and distant man. Wisps of a dream show her another man she may have known intimately, but is he a memory, or a figment of her imagination?

A man with too much information

After many aliases, today Gerard Besson is simply a police commissaire in Marseille. When a mysterious woman starts to follow him, he is suspicious – and intrigued. But things aren't what they seem, and as he reluctantly gets closer to her, dregs of his painful, buried past emerge and make him question her identity.

Each seems to have led several different lives

But neither is prepared for what awaits them when they cross the fine line between knowing your true self and that of your alter ego.

Danger is the name of the game, and as it catches up with them in the French Provence, both know they better be ready for the inevitable fall.

First Line:

There's a man following me again.

Watch the book trailer:

My Review:

Since she woke up from a comma, Amelia has been kept guarded and drugged by her husband. But after a dream and an overheard conversation, she begins to doubt whether what he has told her is correct. With a chance to escape from his grasp, she heads for Marseilles, in search of a man she only knows from her dream. She hopes he will be able to tell her who she truly is and whether they were lovers.

What can I say about this book, except that it has everything a fabulous book should have. There is mystery, gut-clenching suspense, action, emotion and some very steamy scenes. I had no problems clicking with these characters, wanting to know their story. And the ending left me oh so satisfied. I look forward to reading the next book in Zee Monodee's Corpus Brides series, too.

My Rating: 5 Aliens out of 5

The Dangers of Playing It Safe in Sci Fi Romance – Guest Post by Heather Massey

While romance stories promise a Happily Ever After for their heroes and heroines, there's still the matter of the journey beforehand. For many of them, the journey isn't easy. In fact, the harder it is for the couple to achieve the HEA, the more entertaining the story. This is as true for science fiction romance as it is for other romance subgenres.

I find it curious that when it comes to sci-fi romance heroes and heroines with dangerous personalities and occupations (e.g., bounty hunters, soldiers, space pirates, outlaws) there seems to be a tendency to play it safe. In other words, we don't often get a glimpse of how these heroes/heroines became so dangerous or, at the very least, defending their status. (To be fair, this element is present in other romance subgenres as well).

Are there benefits to pulling punches in stories featuring characters whose very nature and/or occupation demand that they know how to punch, and punch often? It's a survival skill, if nothing else, so why aren't they using it more often? True, we're often told about a character's ruthless nature, but how often can we truly say we've encountered characters who demonstrate their ruthlessness right there on the page?

Sometimes, there are tough-and-sexy characters whose dark and edgy nature only runs skin deep. For example, the space pirate who is good "on" the page but whose criminal exploits are only described "off" the page. Being a criminal isn't a coat easily removed! What are readers supposed to believe: what the story tells them, or what it shows them?

By playing it safe, one runs the risk of boring readers.

Sci-fi romance is a subgenre where I question the idea of playing it safe, especially when a story features cutthroat, badass, or unsavory characters. After all, it can be a very dangerous universe out there. Why place characters in threatening situations if they're not going to respond accordingly? Might as well handcuff them for all the good their rough-and-tough nature is doing them. It's not enough to look tough; they have to act tough.

Is it bad to enjoy such characters? No.

Authors showing and readers enjoying tough characters in action does not equal an endorsement of their unscrupulous ways. The point is to entertain not only with their outrageous behaviors, but also their growth. They are more than the sum of their badass parts.

These characters aren't always supposed to be likeable, either—that's part of the appeal. And the more they show their true colors in the story's beginning, the sweeter and more meaningful the moment of redemption when they change for the better—and for love.

Are there lines that tough heroes and heroines would do best not to cross? Probably, although a qualifying factor is that such lines shift from reader to reader. But as long as their redemption is plausible, I don't see a reason to hold them back.

What are your thoughts?

Six Sentence Sunday – 10/09/11: Unknown Futures

Thank you to everyone who keeps coming back to read and comment on my excerpts every week. I appreciate all of your support.

This week I'm going to share an excerpt from my newly contracted story Unknown Futures. It is contracted with Decadent Publishing as part of their 1 Night stand line. Blurb here. Here's the first time the two heroines meet at a space station: (Yes, it's a Science Fiction Romance. What did you expect? LOL)

Frey moved to the side, revealing the petite woman behind him. "And this is Jewel."

Flavia squealed. Unable to hide her exhilaration any longer, she wrapped her arms around Jewel. Not only was she human, but Jewel looked to be only a couple years younger than her.

But her hug wasn't returned, only met with a gasp.

And yes, Frey would be the same character from Celestial Seduction.

Visit http://www.sixsunday.com/ to find out who's participating in Six Sentence Sunday this week or follow the #sixsunday hashtag on twitter.

Writing F/F Romance – A Conversation with Kate Richards Part Two & Contest!!

For Part One of this interview, click here.

So, Kate, tell us about your recent release, Trail of Hearts. It's part of the hugely popular 1 Night Stand series, but the first F/F story.

It is the first to be released, but I believe there is another in editing at this point.

Trail of Hearts is the story of a sophisticated city woman, Charlotte, who much to her surprise (and horror) finds out that her luxurious one-night stand is going to happen at a dude ranch. And her date, Birdie, has had to go to work as a cowhand and guest wrangler at the Castillo Wagon Wheel near Reno, Nevada while she waits to make her dream of having her own ranch come true. Even I thought Madame Eve might have goofed this time.

Goofed! Uh-oh… What inspired you to write this particular book?

I was out at lunch with Heather and Lisa the owners of Decadent Publishing and about fifteen other people at a Greek restaurant at Romantic Times last April and we were all talking about the genres the other editors thought would do well and I got silly and said I'm going to write a Western F/F IR and we all laughed. But then the plot bunnies started hopping around and I thought of these two characters, my city woman, and my country girl, and they just came to life and I fell in love with them and had to tell their story.

I'd love to hear how you came up with yours, it's full of intrigue and twists and turns…

It truly is amazing how we come up with ideas like these.

The idea for my F/F story actually came from something I wrote in my high school Science Fiction English class. (Although I don't think the story developed into what my teacher intended.) I kept a lot of story ideas from that class and thought I would develop this one. It started out as a woman, studying the creatures of a newly discovered planet, who longs for the mechanic who hides his desire for her. (Yes, I was thinking romance even back then.) But I didn't want your typical romance, so I decided to add more conflict, including another woman. Everything kind of developed from there, and thanks to your encouragement, I'm hoping to continue this into a trilogy.

You had a high school Sci Fi English class? What a cool school!

Yes, and I only took the class because of a boy. LOL I didn't know it would lead me to where I am now. Trail of Hearts has many subgenres of romance included in it, GBLT, I/R and Western. How did you make sure all three aspects were included?

My work is almost entirely character driven. Once the plot started running in my head I could see Charlotte, tall and elegant, beautiful clothes, mocha skin and gorgeous glossy black hair and Birdie, blonde blue eyed cowhand (do not call her a cowgirl, makes her crazy) and their personalities were their own. Western…well it's a dude ranch and I set it in the Sierras where I spend a lot of time, it's so beautiful there I thought two women from such different backgrounds would make for an interesting date. After all Charlotte packed for a luxury hotel…who knew?

So can you give the readers an idea of where your trilogy is going?

My trilogy, tentatively called The Underground takes place in a futuristic world and centers around the company, Planet Core. PC owns, yes owns, a major metropolis on Earth and has discovered an Earth-like planet several light years away. Using portals, they've sent researchers there and plan to send inhabitants from Earth to the new planet, Airondelle. But several employees have learned PC's true intentions, to mine Airondelle using the new inhabitants as indentured workers. In Never Gonna Let You Go, Calla learns the truth about the company she works for, after two people she's grown to trust break her heart. The second book will focus on two other female characters, Melina and Brook, their damaged relationship, and their part in the rebellion. All comes to a head in the third book when the rebellion takes on Planet Core, but we also learn more about the leader of the rebellion, Harrison, and his mysterious lover. I'm very excited about this, but I'm sure you can already tell.

In closing, what do you think is the most important thing to remember when writing F/F stories?

For me it is to take my time building emotional connection and tension. As a woman it's what I like in a relationship, so my characters share that with me. It's important in any book, but in a F/F it seems to be even more so.

Thank you so much, Kate! This has truly been a blast.

It really has been! It's a lot of fun and food for thought to discuss a genre I feel so strongly about and enjoy writing. I know your trilogy will be a big success with readers. Thanks so much for inviting me to spend some time with you!

Writing F/F Romance – A Conversation with Kate Richards Part 1 & Contest!!

Hello! I'd like to introduce Kate Richards, a multi-published author of such titles as Finally, My Love and The Virgin and the Playboy, and she's also co-founder and an editor for Decadent Publishing's popular 1 Night Stand series.

Welcome, Kate, to Mark of the Stars! It's an honor to have you here with me today. First, I'd like to say congratulations on your recent release, Trail of Hearts!

Now, Trail of Hearts is your first romance story involving two women. What were the biggest challenges for you in writing this style of romance versus the usual hetero relationship?

Trail of Hearts is actually my second. My first is The Vampire's Bard which is a paranormal sort of historical where I cut my teeth in the genre. It was a challenge for a number of reasons. I kept putting off the actual erotic scenes, while building tension and finally I got worried that I wasn't doing a proper erotic romance…usually the couple gets intimate a lot sooner in my hetero stories.

So I did a bit of research and found that through instinct or dumb luck, I was following the pattern of many other authors who write these stories. Women are women and we like emotions, they are important to us and the flow for me and for many other authors involves building sexual tension and a strong emotional bond before any clothes come flying off. I hope the readers agree!

So, Jessica, you've been working on your first woman loving woman type story. I'd put the same question to you…how is it different from your other books. You took on alien love in Celestial Seduction!

Although my first is not a true romance, more a science fiction/dystopian story with romantic elements, I do have some female lovin'. I'd say the hardest part for me was to get the attraction between the characters just right, especially since the one character had never been with a woman before. There is a lot of emotion involved, including anger at a particular male. With my next two stories, they will be purely F/F, no men involved in satisfying these women.

This may sound funny, but since you're married to a man, where does your inspiration come from for writing the intimate scenes between two females? I know what I use, including the book Lesbian Sex 101 that you recommended.

I am indeed married to a wonderful man and we've been together for ten plus years. I can say I never had the specific experiences my characters have, but before my husband and I met I did a lot of dating and I am always fascinated by relationships. How people make things work. My Christmas story at Decadent Publishing, Avalon for Christmas is a ménage, one woman two men. I do not believe there is a one size fits all relationship and know people who are in all kinds of marriages and other situations. If they can make one another happy, be kind, meet each other's needs, the rest follows naturally. So that's what I try to explore in my stories.

[image error]So, you mentioned that getting the attraction between your characters was difficult. Was it hard for you to see what they might find in one another? The physical, the emotional?

The emotional, no. I completely understand that. We all need someone who we can talk to, depend on and to make us feel loved, wanted. It doesn't matter who we are. We turn to those people when we're happy, sad, bored, etc. They celebrate the good times with us and help us through the bad.

The physical, I pay attention to my husband, and what he's attracted to. I also look for strong male POVs in books, to see what attracts them to a female. But these sources are male. So, yes, the attraction is harder for me. And the sex. For me, most of my sex scenes come from my experiences. Even if I haven't been in the exact situation, I know what I like. LOL

From what I've seen available in the GLBT lines for many publishers, M/M is very popular along with ménage with a female and any number of males. Why do you think the F/F stories are only now being requested and bought?

Seems as though all things come around in our business and it's just the time for this genre. We like new things, new ideas and ways of looking at things. For me it was being contrary, if everyone is writing M/M, I don't want the girls to be left out, we Libras like balance.

Yes, we do.

But I do understand many of the larger E-pubs are looking for F/F, and it must be selling, which is great because I'm having fun writing these love stories between two women right now. But I keep hearing that women buy most of the M/M stories. If that's true I wonder who is buying the F/F? Women? Men? I have no idea but would love to hear from readers on the topic.

Be sure to stop by for Part two tomorrow!

Contest!!

Kate Richards is giving away an ebook copy of both of her F/F stories, Trail of Hearts and The Vampire's Bard. For your chance to win, answer Kate's question above. Or let us know what you would consider to be an important factor in writing F/F stories. Contest is international. Contest ends Sunday, October 9th at midnight EST.

My Writing Family by Cherie Marks – VBT for Into the Fire with Contest!!

Some families you're born into, and some families you luck into along the journey.  I've been blessed with both, and I couldn't be more thankful for the guidance, support, and humor my new extended, writing "families" provide.

About three years ago, I attended a local writing workshop given by the Kentucky Romance Writers of America.  I loved the workshop, loved being around all those folks with that quirky writer bug like me, but most of all, I loved the feeling you get when you recognize that, "Hey, I am a writer!"

I didn't join then.  It wasn't until the next year I was given a dose of perspective.  Diagnosed with stage IIB breast cancer, suddenly I had a sense of urgency I'd never had before.  I attended the annual workshop again, but this time, I joined these writers on their journeys and could not be more thankful I did.  These ladies have been generous with their time, patience, and laughter through my learning curve.  They've read my rough stuff and still given me confidence to keep writing.  They've also shared their own personal experiences with life's ups and downs and given me hope through a difficult time.

Now I'm one year cancer free and running unopposed for member-at-large (it's a small chapter).  I look forward to our monthly get-togethers whether we are discussing board business, critiquing, building our craft, or just discussing the changes in publishing.  We scandalize the local library on a regular basis with our topics of discussion.

However, I have another writing family that keeps me energized.  One amazing experience I was literally lucky enough to fall into was attending the RWA National Conference 2010 in Orlando, FL.  Not only did I learn a tremendous amount of information about the industry, but I also met a fantastic group of ladies that still brighten my days on a regular basis.

The final night of RWA National, an amazing lady and fellow breast cancer survivor invited me to an after-party in one of the hotel suites.  How could I say no?  Let me tell you, that was the hardest and the most I've laughed in a long while.  We talked about everything from writing to men to making unmentionable shapes in the snow—the tongue-in-cheek origin of the name, Ass Cheek Angels.  We have a loop where we stay in contact and a group blog where we discuss "writing by the seat of our pants."

As if I weren't fortunate enough to have two fabulous writing families, I count myself lucky to be a part of The Wild Rose Press family.  No matter the questions, no matter the need, no matter the news, the roses are always there.  Through loops and the connections made, I feel like there's nothing I can't accomplish with my new-found publishing family.

Families are blessings, and I couldn't have asked for three better writing families to walk with along this writing journey.

I love to hear from readers, writers, and in-betweeners, so please e-mail me at authorcheriemarks@gmail.com or follow me on Twitter at http://twitter.com/cheriemarks or catch me on Facebook at http://on.fb.me/qRl1lD.  You're always welcome at my website http://www.cheriemarks.com or stop into the blog for a little fun at http://www.cheriemarks.blogspot.com

Author Bio

It all started with an old fashioned typewriter.  When my family brought it home, all those stories and characters rolling around in my head could finally get out.  The press and click of the keys satisfied in their own right, but when I pulled out a finished page, I knew this was for me.  Since then, I've graduated to a laptop, but the stories still find a way out.

I'm a breast cancer survivor, a teacher, a wife, a mother, and from the very beginning—a storyteller.  Always a hint humorous and honest to a fault, I love to make people laugh and smile.  My goal in life is to achieve tact and stop procrastinating.  The battle wages on.

Blurb:

Months after he stole her affections—then her executive chef position—Shyann and Luke meet again under sizzling circumstances, competing head-to-head on a televised cooking show called Kitchen Twist.

Each arrives with a motive: Luke intends to win back Shyann's heart, even as she wants closure on the not-so-tasty heartbreak he once served up.Luke knows culinary masterpieces require a delicate touch, but that knowledge is tossed out with the leftovers as he works to show Shyann he's not such a bad guy.

Now he pushes his skills to the limit to win the competition and satisfy a bet. Can two top chefs resist each other as they move out of the pan and into the fire?

Excerpt:

Silence reigned for half a minute before he reached out a hand and touched hers like a breezy whisper.  Her head went a little fuzzy at the warm contact. He shouldn't still be able to affect her so strongly.

"I regret it went down the way it did, but why did you show me the exit before giving me a chance to explain, not to mention—dress? Enlighten me, sugar cheeks?"

With a jerk, she pulled her hand free. He was really asking for it. Sugar cheeks? Seriously? Now she knew he was only messing with her. She could give as well as she got.

"Tell you what. You win tonight, and I'll give you your chance. You lose, we go our separate ways, and you walk out all by yourself, big boy."

A crooked grin formed on his face as he reached a hand toward her hair. He fingered an escaping curl before she pulled away, leaving his hand hanging in midair."You can call me big boy all you want, but I'll do you one better. How about if I win, I take you to dinner, and you let me explain the whole situation?"

She felt her eyebrow rise and knew he'd read it as interest, but she didn't care at the moment. "I honestly don't want to hear any explanation from you now or ever, but if I win? Which I will, of course."

"Then I'll leave it up to you. If you want me to walk away, I will." He took a step closer, placed his hand on her shoulder, and leaned down, his mouth right next to her ear. "But if you want me to call you darling, sweetheart, and sugar cheeks all night long, I'll do that too."

Giveaway

During the book tour, Cherie Marks will be giving away two $10 GCs to The Wild Rose Press and one $10 GC to Amazon.com to randomly drawn commenters during the tour — Be sure to follow the tour, because the more you comment, the better your chances of winning. Well, I'm super excited to tell you I signed a contract with Silver Publishing for my first novel! It's a Science Fiction Romance called The Zurian Child which is the first book in my Mark of the Stars series. This was the first story I wrote and the first I posted when I started Six Sentence Sunday. It has gone through several rounds of revisions and edits since then. I also have other WIPs I'm working on right now, getting them ready for submission.

My Blog

I have the following CONTESTS going on right now:
