A Day in the Life of a Full-Time Writer

I really love the scene at the beginning of the movie Coming to America when Prince Akeem (played by Eddie Murphy) is awakened by an orchestra playing soft music. A servant with a quiet voice says his name. The sounds of nature join the orchestra. Young ladies toss rose petals before him as he walks. Servants are there to take care of his every need.

When I was young (and clueless, we might as well say it) I thought a published author’s day started like this. (Minus the tooth brushing and but...

Writers are Super Heroes.

Their Superpowers are: Imagination, Curiosity, and Creativity.

Imagination.

Writers are blessed/cursed with wild, vivid imaginations capable of great things. Imagination is everything to a writer. It’s a way to preview life’s coming attractions. It’s the ability to change the past in our mind’s eye. Writers imagine stories everywhere. Through our senses, into our minds, we ingest the world around us then reshape it all into new images in our imagination.

Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is...

The Beauty in the Dull

Now that we’re a couple of weeks into the WWF, I wanted to share a few quick thoughts on persistence. This is the stage where the initial enthusiasm might be starting to wear off and the daily push for words has become a bit…well, slog-ish.

We’ve all been there. And without trying to be a total downer, we’ll all be there again. The bright shiny idea that drew us to the keyboard like a magnet has dulled a bit and there…off in the distance….why right there is the glimmer of a newer, brighter, s...

Write On 2017! – Strengths And Weaknesses

I want all of you to picture yourself on a boat. Any boat. Any body of water. Might be sailboat on the ocean or a kayak on white water rapids. This boat represents you on your writing journey.

Are you in your boat? Good. Because it’s time for the next installment of our Write On 2017! series, which explores ways to help you stay on course and on fire about your writing. Today’s topic: things that propel your writing, hinder your writing, and yes, sink the dang boat. We’ll call these Strengths...

If The Gods Can Screw Up, Why Can’t I?

Each time it’s my turn to blog here at the Ruby Slippered Sisterhood, I get nervous. Over the years, my Ruby sisters have taught me so much about the craft of writing, professionalism, and the handling of life’s ups and downs with grace. But what I’ve learned most from them is to be true to myself.

As the Winter Writing Fest progresses and you see all the posts from the participants that they made their goals, you might feel depressed because you didn’t make your goal. Well let me say, “You s...

Free-For-All Friday: Crowd-sourced Promotion Insights

Readers of the Ruby blog may know that I’ve been waiting out a rights reversion timeline with my former publisher. I have good news and bad news.

The good news? I obtained publication rights back for my traditionally published Underbelly Chronicles books in late 2016! If my plans hold, I’ll be able to reissue those books sometime during the first quarter of 2017, and publish ENTHRALL ME, Tia and Wyland’s story, later this year.

The bad news? I haven’t published a book in over three years, and...

Share a Snippet!

We’re 10 days into the 2017 Winter Writing Festival, and participants have spun out hundreds of thousands of new words, whether joining in the rsswwf.comwriting sprints or working in the privacy of their own writing caves.

I love hearing folks in the Chat Room come back after 20 or 30 minutes of sprinting and say, “I wrote 673 new words!” or “I finished a chapter of my vampire slayer romance!”

All that wonderful writing didn’t exist before the Festival began, and now it’s HERE!!

Back in the 2...

Write On 2017! – Your Vision

Image via Wiki Commons By Evan-Amos – Own work, Public Domain

Every Monday I volunteer at a house of hospitality for pregnant and newly parenting women. Essentially, it’s a homeless shelter. Many of our moms have no family support or are newly released from jail or battling addiction.

One of the first things our moms do once they arrive at the house is put together a vision board. On this vision board they place words and images of what they want in their futures. For most of these women, thi...
