Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month is an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. It is celebrated during March in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

As one writer to another I’m asking you to take some time and talk to the women in your family to get the other half of the story. Other half of the story? Yes. World events, disasters, family triumphs and celebrations told from their point of view. The vast majority of...

Closing Ceremonies for the 2017 Winter Writing Festival!

Oh, my goodness! Is it just me, or does the WWF go faster every year? Once again, we’ve reached DAY FIFTY! That means this is our final Check-In Tuesday, and time to extinguish the famous Writing Festival torch for another year.  You still have ALL DAY today to work towards your goals–nothing ends until midnight your time. (As always, the Festival is always about YOU.)

And we know everyone who stuck with the Festival is finishing up with LOTS AND LOTS of fabulous writing progress, and has Cre...

Always

I’m a firm believer that you should never stop learning. On my last day walking this earth, I intend to learn something about this world, or the world I’m about to enter, or myself.

I wince when I hear people say they don’t need to know this or that. Why won’t you want to know something about everything?

Since this is a blog for writers and we focus mainly on the craft of writing and publishing industry and elements related to both, I’ll speak to the authors reading this. Never stop studying...

Not So Fast…

The idea for this blog post on writing speed came after reading some responses our readers made to Shelley Coriell’s 1/25/17 blog post, Write on 2017! Strengths and Weaknesses. (Awesome series! Check it out.) In retrospect, writing speed has been on my radar since the Ruby Blog’s early days, when I jokingly called Ruby Sister Darynda Jones and me “The Tortoise and the Hare.” (Make no mistake, I’m the tortoise.) While reading comments people posted to Shelley’s blog, it didn’t take long to not...

Share a Snippet, ROUND THREE!!!!!

It’s Day 45 of the the 2017 Winter Writing Festival, and we’re heading into the final last-push weekend!!! (Closing Ceremonies and our final Check-In happen on Tuesday!) I KNOW so many wonderful, intrepid, creative souls have been hard at work in the Chat Room Sprints and in your own personal writing caves writing amazing, moving, hilarious, romantic, conflict-driven WORDS.  One last time during this round of the WWF, I’d love for you to SHARE just a little bit…a line, a paragraph, a juicy ex...

Write On 2017! – Time Management

For the past eight weeks in our Write on 2017 series, we’ve explored ways to stay on course and on fire about our writing. Today we’re going to wrap up the series by discussing the most asked question I get when I give productivity workshops to writers, and that is, “How can I find more time to write?”

If you’ve already made writing a priority (remember this little clown?), it’s not a matter of finding time but better using the time you have. Here are a few quick tips:

1. Clock in for Busines...

Sixth Check-In Day for the Winter Writing Festival!

Happy Festival Check-In Day!

We’re getting close to the finish line, but we aren’t quite there yet!  There’s just one more week to go in the annual Ruby Winter Writing Festival, so if you’re on track, keep on pushing and if you’ve fallen behind, there’s still time to finish strong!  We’ve got this!

Whether you’re piling up the words or trudging through revisions, we want to hear from you.  This is our day to congratulate, console and encourage, so be sure to leave a comment and let us know h...

Tips For Writing Faster

Happy Monday! And Happy Release Day to the first book in my new Scottish Historical Romance, Highland Isles series! THE BEAST OF AROS CASTLE is about 65K words, and I wrote it in two months. I wrote the sequel in two months also, with Christmas thrown into the schedule.

Do I live alone, with only a fish to feed once a day, and eat frozen meals? No. I have three very busy kids, a hubby who works late, so I do all the cooking, and six animals that the kids said they’d look after. (Yeah, right!...

A Tale of Three Covers: An Exposé by Nikki Navarre

It started with a plot. Innocent historical romance author Laura Navarre never dreamed it was coming…until it hit. Laura’s diabolical twin, double agent and spy romance author Nikki Navarre (that’s me), surged to global notoriety when the book I wrote purely for my own pleasure ended up not only published by a boutique press, but selling better than anything Laura had written for larger houses. That book was The Russian Seduction, my sexy spy romance about a renegade Russian submarine captain...

Write On 2017! – Your Writing TEAM

Writing is a solitary pursuit and lonely profession. Publishing is not. Behind every successful author is a team who gets stories from a writer’s heart and into readers’ hands. If you’re a Lee Child or J.K Rowling, your team will include hundreds of members ranging from editors and publicists to street team leaders and booksellers. If you’re working on your first novel, your team may number just two or three.

Regardless of where you’re at in your writing career, I’m going to challenge you to...
