Love the One You’re With

The, ahem, older song “Love the One You’re With” was always one I liked, but the message wasn’t one I really cared for. If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with? Well, that sort of encourages cheating, doesn’t it? And, of course, a man wrote it. I think.

But I’ve been thinking a lot about readers here lately. Now I know some of you may be unpublished as of yet, but I think this post can apply to anything you are involved with, especially if that thing is aimed at gettin...

Thoughts on Establishing Writing GOALS

It is proven individuals with goals are significantly more successful than those without.

Think of your writing career as writing a book. Do your characters wander around a story doing nothing? Nope. Your characters have purpose, a story goal. If a character’s goal is to be the president of the US, she will have to do some things, have a plan, take steps to reach that goal. What happens in a book is plot. What happens in your life is planning. As authors, we want to write the best book possib...

Goal Setting Advice for the 2018 Winter Writing Festival!!

The Festival starts next week! The Festival starts next week!! (Wednesday, January 10, to be exact.) I hope you’re as excited as I am, and ready for some BIG PRODUCTIVITY through what could otherwise be the dreariest part of winter.  To help you get ready, I’m re-posting a blog from previous years about how to get ready and set workable goals:

One of my favorite parts of the Ruby Slippered Sisterhood’s Winter Writing Festival is the fact that you can set your own goals. You decide what you ne...

When Life gives you Lemons

Throw them back overhand and with force. We all have those lemons in our life that keep us from writing to our maximum potential. Producing to our maximum potential. Having the career we want.

Most often, we think the things holding us back are family. Children, parents, spouses, pets. May I say emphatically they are not the lemons I’m speaking of. Well, not until they get on your last nerve. When that happens, I suggest taking a long soak in the tub with a book rather than throwing said fami...

Welcome to 2018!

Happy New Year and welcome to 2018!!!  Eights have always been lucky for me, so I’m hoping this is a sign of an amazing year to come.  I can’t wait for the Olympics, I’m pumped about the Ruby Writing Festival (starting in less than two weeks!!!), and I’m busting with optimism for a GREAT year for all of us.

Last week, RWA asked on twitter what our writing goals were for 2018 and I said mine were to:

Write all the words. Read more. Enjoy the moment I’m in.

I’m hoping I can achieve each of...

I’ll be home for Christmas…

My parents have the sweetest love story. They met in England 60 years ago on a Royal Air Force (RAF) base. He was a USAF officer from Oklahoma, and she was a music teacher, newly arrived from Memphis to teach little kids at the on-base American school. They had their first date the day after they met and...

READER CONNECTION: USING MEMORIES

Emma didn’t know what woke her— the excitement of the celebration to come in a few hours or the moonlight streams shimmering through the window, but something had.  Her heart, like an Olympic sprinter’s, drummed against her narrow chest as she brushed her bangs from her eyes.

The chilled night air held a fresh laundered scent and kissed her nose. She curled her fingers into the blanket’s satin edge and tucked the comforter securely under her chin. Soft warmth surrounded Emma, chasing the nip...
