Abracadabra

I love words. I love their subtlety, their brashness, their clarity, their obfuscation, their evocativeness, their sass, and so much more.

Like people, words are multifaceted, imbued with bothbrilliance and occlusions, light and dark. They can be courtesans or prostitutes, elusive and elegantor bold and blowsy, similar but not the same, available to anyone with the wherewithal and desire. Finding the right one takes time, but the satisfaction is worth the effort.

Location…Location….Location

When buying a house, you often hear the words Location. Location. Location. This means the cost of a house will depend on the area in which it’s located . The more desirable the area, the higher the price. However, location pricing isn’t exclusive to house buying. It also affects hotels, airlines, and concert/sporting events.

Location can also affect your character’s physical emotional reaction.

Say what?

I know. I know. Just stay with me.

I am in the process of heavy revisions. I’m talking basic...

RUSH

We’re ten days into the Winter Writing Fest and I want to talk about stress. Appropriate? I think so.

Stress affects every level of our lives, including our writing.

I don’t know about you but the moment my feet hit the floor in the morning until sometime in the late evening I’m on the go. The list is endless. Some days, I feel as if my feet will drop off at the ankles if I stop and propped them up and my mind is mush. Let’s face it, women are caregivers and being a caregiver is stressful. Add...

What is the Ruby Slippered Sisterhood, Anyway?

Some of you who’ve joined us for the Winter Writing Festival may be wondering why we call ourselves the Ruby Slippered Sisterhood.

Are we Kansas farmgirls? Green-skinned witches? A mysterious cult?

Nope–we’re writers. A group of 60+ romance writers who first came together on March 26, 2009, when we were all named finalists in the Romance Writers of America’s prestigious Golden Heart contest.

Since that day, we’ve (collectively) published hundreds of books, and even hit the New York Times Bestsel...

A Quick Guide to our Writing Sprints!

Are you ready for some sprinting????

Woohoo! I hope so! I know I am.

So okay, here’s the deal. I thought I would jump in here and do a real quick how-to for Ruby sprinting. Many of you joined us in previous years (and I can’t wait to sprint with you again!), but I know there are others out there who just aren’t sold on sprints yet. Or maybe you’re a little shy about joining, or just not feeling quite “techy” enough. I’m here to allay your fears.

I also want to let you know that each and every la...

2014: Change or More of the Same?

Finding a balance for me has been the greatest challenge over the last 4 years since I first sold, and I’m still working on it. Still searching for that magic recipe that makes all the cogs fit into place.

I have dubbed 2014 as the Get My Crap Together Year. 2013 was tough on so many levels and that showed in the nerve I had (though some would call it ballsy) to repeatedly push my deadlines to the point of seriously risking my career. By the end of 2013, I was a wreck and ready to seek mental...

AN AUTHOR’S GMC

Like successful books, successful writers have

Goals, Motivation, and Conflict.

Think about it. Writers are no different from the characters we set up in stories. We have our goals, the reason why we want to achieve those goals and we have internal and external conflict preventing us from reaching those goals. As authors, we want to write the best book possible and be published. GOAL.

It’s proven that individuals with goals are significantly more successful than those without. Think of your care...
