You, Your Life, Your Writing.

When my children were born, they had two sets of grandparents and two sets of great-grandparents. They thought nothing of it, safe within the nurturing embrace of a large and loving family.

I can’t recall whether Son was in kindergarten or first grade, but one day, he arrived home confused and agitated. He’d discovereda classmate had no grandparents at all. How could that be?

The shattering of normal had begun.

This is one of my favorite memes (Sorry, Angelica, but Carolyn will always be Mortici...

Success by the Numbers

At RWA Nationals in San Antonio, I attended a panel of hybrid authors. The discussion centered around their reasons for choosing traditional versus indie publishing. One author, who identified herself as strictly self-publishing now, stated that indie authors are the ones who are making the right business decision. There is more money to be made on indie books. In her opinion, those who publish through traditional channels are doing so for “emotional” reasons. She thinks that’s fine, as long...

The Art of Revision

RSS blog 8.6.14OK…so I’ll admit it. The headline of this blog piece is hooey. As far as I can tell, there is no “art” to the process of revising a manuscript. There may be plenty of art in writing and storytelling but the process of revision is all about hard work.

Hard work, you say? Come on, Addison, writing the darn thing isn’t so easy, either.

While I won’t argue that point, to me revision is the single hardest piece of writing a book.

If you spend any time around writers groups you quickly hear chatter ab...

Awesome #RWA14 SWAG!!

Frequent Ruby Readers may remember that I’m one of those annoying people who doesn’t seem to be influenced by most promo and marketing approaches, and alas, swag is no exception. But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t some awesome swag on hand at the Romance Writers of America’s National Conference recently held in San Antonio. It also doesn’t mean I didn’t pick some up. ;-)

Following are some of the items I collected at RWA National. If I notice a trend in the swag I picked up, it’s that the swag w...

Ruby Release: The Sweetest September by Liz Talley

Amy_SweetWelcome, friends, to the party I’m throwing for myself. Presumptuousof me, huh?

But, oh well, today is a great day to celebrate, Friday and all that, so I figured why not throw a release party and invite all of you?

The Sweetest September is my 13th book, and I’m banking on it being lucky ’cause I’m positive that way. And not only am I celebrating another book released into the wild, but I’m celebrating a new me. Yeah. A new Liz Talley.

Once upon a time….a long time ago (aka, when the fab Liz Be...

This Writer’s Life: Balance

I may have blogged about balance before. It’s one of my favorite topics because I believe feeling balanced isone of the keys to happiness. To be honest, I’m not sure I qualify to lectureanyone in balance, as each case is as unique as each individual, but as a mother of three, wife, the family secretary, daughter, sister, author and domestic goddess (*snort*),I often get head shakes accompanied with “I don’t know how you do it.” Or questions like “How do you make time for writing?”

I don’t pret...

Updated Golden Heart & RITA Rules!

Every year prior to conference the RWA National Board meets and makes changes to the contests. This is the ONLY time such changes can be made because it is the only board meeting when the contest is not actively in session. The new rules were released following the meeting and I’m sure will soon be posted in more detail on the individual contest pages, but for now here is RWA’s SUMMARY OF CHANGES.

And here’s a little breakdown of the highlights:

Entrants are required to judge.

Entrants will not...

Welcome Back!!

Hope you all made it home safe and sound from RWA Nationals, everybody!!!
We know most of you are in a state of combined jet-lag and emotional exhaustion and are probably soaking your feet to recover from your gorgeous-but-painful conference footwear, but we’re hoping you can take a moment to share just ONE detail that really sticks with you from this year’s Nationals.
What was one thing you saw or heard or did that really inspired you and will be fueling your writing as you look ahead?

Follow the Rubies at RWA National

Many of the ruby sisters will be attending the Romance Writers of America’s national conference in San Antonio this week. And we thought, instead of daily blogs about the event, it might be way more fun to post the live Twitter feed from the authors who are attending. So here it is. This feed will be up from now until next Monday.
