Went to a schoolyard carnival (a la Grease) to smell the smell of fried things on sticks; to ride a Ferris Wheel (of course); and to nab some possibilities for a new author photo: I think there’s something there with that top one. (Also—I felt very tall and old and dressed from the L.L. Bean Catalog—which I sort of was, that sweater—amongst the junior highers and their bubble gum and short skirts and sass.)

BEA (Book Expo America) is just a few weeks away, and I’m especially looking forward to being a part of School Library Journal’s Day of Dialog on Monday, June 4th. I’ll be on the Debut Author panel along with R. J. Palacio, Wonder (Random House); J. Anderson Coats, The Wicked and the Just (Houghton Harcourt); and Ellis Weiner, The Templeton Twins Have an Idea (Chronicle).

Omaha’s own Jeffrey Koterba (a wonderful cartoonist and writer I was glad to get to know a bit whilst in Nebraska) offered this tribute to Maurice Sendak. I think it’s pretty much perfect.

Yesterday David Abrams (author of the forthcoming debut novel FOBBIT) included tMoCP trailer for his weekly “Trailer Park Tuesday” blog feature over at The Quivering Pen. (This was especially nice/surprising since the trailer—and book, for that matter—have been “out” for a few months, now. Y’all know the labor-of-love that was that trailer, so it’s swell to have it kicked about the internets again.)

I happen to have one of these (the one pictured, actually) and my wife has the grey version with black image (which is also very nice). It’s a fine, fine T-shirt, it really is. You should probably get your own, and then we can make plans to wear them together and take pictures whilst doing so.

lovelyarc:

I somehow missed this truly fantastic NY Times essay by novelist Margo Raab: “I’m Y.A.; and I’m Okay” when it was published four years ago (yes, just call me late to the party as usual), but it’s completely relevant and timely still.

From the essay: “A lot of people have no idea that right now Y.A. is the Garden of Eden of literature,” said Sherman Alexie, whose first Y.A. novel, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” won the National Book Award for young people’s literature last year. Even the prestige of that award didn’t make him impervious to the stigma. “Some acquaintances felt I was dumbing down,” Alexie said in a phone interview. “One person asked me, ‘Wouldn’t you have rather won the National Book Award for an adult, serious work?’ I thought I’d been condescended to as an Indian — that was nothing compared to the condescension for writing Y.A.”

tMoCP (and two other brand new YA novels featuring, gasp, girls-who-like-girls) featured in THE BOSTON GLOBE (complete with a Rubyfruit Jungle reference—be still my heart.)

A little taste: “With echoes of Rita Mae Brown’s “Rubyfruit Jungle,” emily m. danforth’s debut novel, “The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” is perceptive, nuanced, and beautiful. Or maybe it’s enough to just call it a new coming-of-age classic.”
