Do self-published authors have a chance at success?
The question many authors I’ve spoken to always ask: Do self-published authors have a chance at success? I had submitted to the Crime Writers of Canada previously and never made their short list. THE RUMRUNNER’S BOY was sent to three big Canadian publishers and rejected, yet the Crime Writers of Canada deemed it worthy as a finalist. The other four

Chapters Indigo Book Launch – Edmonton South Common
I managed to snag a book launch/signing at Chapters Indigo South Common store July 6th 11-4 pm for THE RUMRUNNER’S BOY. I thank Karen Wickstrom, who was very personable and has an empathy for self-published authors who have no marketing machine behind them.

Arthur Ellis Award update
I attended the Crime Writers of Canada awards gala in Toronto and did not expect to win the Arthur Ellis Award, especially against Linwood Barclay, who won it last year. He did in fact, win it again. Being nominated as a Finalist is an evaluation on my writing. Next stop, getting Chapters to stock it. The Geoffrey Bilson Award for

THE RUMRUNNER’S BOY book orders
Book orders for THE RUMRUNNER’S BOY are beginning to roll in. Over on Pelee Island, where the story takes place, the Pelee ArtWorks store will have a shipment in about two weeks. I’m getting a few orders at home, too. I find out tomorrow if I win the big enchilada. I’m flying to Toronto for the big gala and should

Where Is Canada’s Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer?
Is there a literary character in Canada akin to Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn? Certainly, Ann of Green Gables is the female version of sorts. Could Jarod Lee Hooker of THE RUMRUNNER’S BOY qualify? He has courage and fights for respect among rough men on the rumrunning crews.

Arthur Ellis Award & Crime Writers of Canada
The Arthur Ellis Award is just one of the awards through the Crime Writers of Canada. My story, the RUMRUNNER’S BOY is in the YA category. Many readers have read YA and didn’t even know it: Huckleberry Finn, Lord of the Flies, Treasure Island. As a finalist I am attending the gala on May 23rd in Toronto. I suspect the

Local author nominated for Crime Writer’s Award
What else can I say except that one of my favorite authors, Linwood Barclay, is also a finalist in the same category. He’s won the Arthur Ellis YA Award before and I’m sure all the big publishers are lobbying the judges for their authors to win. And little ol’ me? No marketing or behind the scenes schmoozing.

Small town news
It ain’t the National Post but it’ll have to do. AT least I knocked off some hockey playoffs.

Book Launch update
As you all know, THE RUMRUNNER’S BOY was launched last Friday in Windsor to an underwhelming response. However, I did stock Storytellers Bookstore there with copies. I went along the Lake Erie shore and found book/gift shops there very receptive and managed to stock Green Heron Books in Paris, Pelee Point Trading Post, Pelee Point Bird/Gift store, Liberty Gifts and

Crime Writers of Canada finalist
THE RUMRUNNER’S BOY is in the final five for an Arthur Ellis YA crime award. The gala is in Toronto in late May where the winner will be announced. Just making the top five puts me in with some distinguished authors. Before I self-published I approached twelve publishers and agents and only two responded. Their loss, I guess. At the
