Book Review of MALEVOLENT by Sam Tepes

When people begin disappearing without a trace, friends and families become suspicious about where they are and why they are missing. Dubious circumstances surround each missing person, and Bryan, the brother of one, is convinced that his sibling would never just leave without letting him know. He is certain that something terrible has happened to his brother, and sets out to find the truth. He locates a group of people who are also missing loved ones and asks to join them as they search for the missing. But the man they refer to as ‘The Hunter’, strikes an uneasy chord with Bryan. What happens next is a horror reader’s delight, with twists and turns galore, and just enough creep to satisfy.
Sam Tepes has penned a haunting story that will titillate your scenes and keep you reading non-stop to the end. This one is not too over-the-top, but has just enough scary to keep the reader entertained, while still making those little hairs on the back of the neck stand at attention.
Very entertaining, with just the right amount of gore, and totally believable characters, make this one a winner. 4 spiders, easily… Bravo to Sam Tepes and MALEVOLENT.

Book Review of HELLSCAPES, Vol II, by Stephen Zimmer

HELLSCAPES, Vol. II, was written by Stephen Zimmer and published through Seventh Star Press in Oct. 2015. It is available at www.amazon.com
You reap what you sow… No truer words can be said about death, and HELLSCAPES, Vol. II, by Stephen Zimmer contains six short stories that entertain some not-so-pleasant visions of what life after death could be.
Six stories:The CavernThe RiotAbove as BelowSpots Do Not ChangeWeaving WebsThe Club
Macabrely hellish in they descriptions and tortured truths, but absolutely spot-on in their assumption that, how one lives their life, so shall they spend their death. Expertly told by Zimmer in this second book in his HELLSCAPES series.
Good characterization, chillingly frightening scenarios and excellent storytelling, all combine to make HELLSCAPES, Vol II a 5 spider read. If you ever wondered what HELL might be like, pick up Zimmer’s book… it’s all in there.

Book Review of LUNA by Rick Chesler

2024 A.D….
Billionaire tycoon, Blake Garner, and a group of private citizens leave Earth to visit the Moon. Blake wants to make the Moon, a tourist attraction and he’s taking a few interested parties and government officials up for a test run. But Blake has information that could potentially spell disaster for the group in this gripping space novel from Rick Chesler.
Problems arise from the moment the Command Spaceship takes off, making it necessary to land off coordinates. Then Blake wants to drag the passengers and crew on a lunar walk that includes a cave system found during an earlier exploration. No one, except Blake, is aware that alien life has been found there, and lives have already been lost. What occurs next is an all-out fight for survival and escape by a few, from a gruesome, lingering death at the mercy of a horde of strange lunar predators.
With excellent characterization and visual savvy, Rick Chesler weaves an interesting tale of space exploration gone wrong, in this frighteningly original story. The progression of events will keep the reader gasping for air and on the cosmic edge, as the characters fight to make it off the Moon alive. A great, compact read that will give you chills and have you watching the ground around you.

Book Review of MEGALODONS: A Deep Sea Thriller, by Eric S. Brown and Clarence Wirtz

Four monstrously over-sized killers, genetically engineered by terrorist in an illegal bio-weapons program, are on the hunt. For Capt. Cooper and the crew and Special Forces aboard the Littoral Combat Ship, Nighstalker, sent to take down a terrorist-controlled drilling platform, these monsters are for real. And they mean to destroy the ship and all those on board.
Engineered with special abilities, the battleship-sized fish are undetectable, even by the advanced technological capabilities of the USS Nightstalker, until they strike with ferocious power. Crippled in the water, the Nightstalker’s only hope is a crack team of Special Forces, who must enter the rig and find out what is driving these gigantic beasts.
In a similar vein to Steve Alten’s MEG, this novella by Eric S. Brown & Clarence Wirtz will have you on the edge and avoiding the water, as it takes you on a hair-raising cruise to Hell. Well written and edited, with all the creepy you can handle and then some, this story may have you re-thinking your next trip to the beach.

A Guest Blog Post from HEART OF A LION author Stephen Zimmer

Heroines Who Have Inspired Me
HEART OF A LION centers around the heroine Rayden Valkyrie, a warrior who lives by a strong honor code in a very dangerous world. She has no place to truly call home, and has endures many trials, heartaches, and adversities, but it has not hardened her to indifference.
A heroine inspires, and the ways in which a heroine inspires can come in different forms. There have been many heroines who have inspired me, from history to literature to the screen. First and foremost among them is my mother, who taught by example what strength really is about, a kind of strength that does not involve skill in physical combat. I miss her dearly since she passed away in 2013, but the lessons she taught about strength have grown in my understanding of them the past couple of years.
I thought I would share a few other heroines, from history, screen, and legend, who have inspired me in some way. There is no particular order to this list, and I hope you discover some inspiring figures yourself out of this group:
Boudicca After her husband, the King of the Iceni died, Boudicca had to endure her homeland being annexed by the Romans, who flogged her and raped her two daughters. Boudicca, the Queen of the Iceni, rose to lead a rebellion against the Romans, winning several victories before falling in a great battle against the forces led by Seutonius.
I always loved the account of Tacitus, the Roman historian, who I suspect had an admiration for the strength and determination of this amazing woman. His account of her before the final battle is very stirring, where she, upon her chariot and flanked by her daughters, exhorts her forces and tells them that she, a woman, is resolved to win or die, and that the men can choose slavery if they want to. The Romans, using superior tactics and channeling in the much larger rebel forces, won the battle, but that does not take anything away from the strength and courage reflected in this incredible lady's story. I felt a very powerful emotion when I stood next to her statue in London on a trip I took to the UK, the statue that shows her with arms upraised and her two daughters at her side.
Aethelflaed, Lady of the MerciansA daughter of the greast Saxon King Alfred, she lived during the thick of the Viking invasions of England in the beginning of the tenth century. The historical accounts do not have a lot of detail, but it is clear that she led her people in resisting the Vikings, from battle to fortifying towns to building new fortresses, at least ten on record.
The title “Lady of the Mercians” was earned, given to her following a victorious battle over the Vikings. It is a title given to her because of her actions not because of birth. She was reputed to be a great tactician and I suspect, given the style of battle at that time, that she bore weapons at battles. Her own husband did not participate in the campaigns against the Vikings. She showed leadership, courage, wisdom and strength in her life, along with a true care of the Mercian people she was responsible for, all of which has inspired me.
The ValkyriesThe Valkyries of Norse lore represent a lot to me. They were the choosers of those who would be given the honor of going to Valhalla after falling in battle, and they were also the lovers of heroes. They were unquestionably great warriors, but they also represented courage, loyalty and many other things to me in the various depictions of them throughout history. There is also the presence of the value of family among them, as they are sisters and that wonderful bond of family is something to always hold in the highest regard.
Xena, Warrior PrincessI have to admit having quite the crush on Xena as a younger lad during the heights of the series' popularity on television. The character of Xena, a no-nonsense, yet honorable warrior, resonated strongly with me. She was ferocious in combat, though she never exhibited cruelty and always seemed to be kinder to the downtrodden, stepping in to protect the victims of a predatory ancient world. She also did not compromise herself, in terms of who she was. As much as I found her absolutely gorgeous, it was the other things that really drew me to love the character over time. A powerful, iconic, honorable figure without question.
Mother Teresa I feel Mother Teresa is the strongest woman on my list. She was a great warrior, though her battles did not involve physical combat, swords, or guns. Observing the poverty and suffering around her, she set out on a personal mission to do something about it, a path that led to the foundation of the Missionaries of Charity, and organization that is now active in over 130 countries worldwide.
She was a leader, determined, visionary, and dedicated. Though small of stature, and gentle in nature, she led a war against suffering to defend the most vulnerable in society. She made no distinction between world leaders and the poorest of the poor, treating all with the same love and humility. She was the type of leader who led from the front, always engaging those she cared for directly and personally. While some may disagree with some of the things she stood for, she did not ever sell out or compromise her beliefs, no matter what. On so many levels, she demonstrated the essence of heroism, and most certainly is a heroine who has inspired me.
I will close this post on inspiring heroines out with a few of Mother Teresa's words, which contain quite a lesson about what it means to be heroic, if you think about them. Only the last line has a direct religious connotation, and whether you are a person of faith or not, there is much to be gleaned from this particular passage.
Everyone has the capacity to be a hero or heroine, at the end of the day. Become one, and inspire others.
“People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.
In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.”

A Guest Blog Post from BORN OF SWORDS author, Steven L. Shrewsbury

WHICH TALE TO TELL IN A SAGA
Every so often, I’m asked how many books will be in the Gorias La Gaul series. Well, frankly, I dunno. Unlike many writers, aka Jordan or Martin, I didn’t conceive of Gorias’ life as an epic five, ten or if you believe the faulty memory of George Lucas, nine installments. Since I want to explore his long life, the idea is open ended.
“Which book is first in the series?”
Well, THRALL was released first, but it is technically one of the last. To quote Robert E. Howard (and why not?) the tales come to me out of sequence and I don’t have a set agenda in my mind for all of them. Gorias is 700 years old in THRALL and that leaves a great deal of wiggle room. In the new release BORN OF SWORDS we see Gorias a bit before THRALL, after the events of OVERKILL and get a glimpse of him at 24 years old. Not every Gorias novel will be a “SEE WHY HE’S SUCH A JADED PRICK?!" justification work, but each will be a standalone time. Each yarn is good unto itself and one doesn’t have to get all of them to GET the one you pick up. I do recommend getting them all as they are fun stuff, but I digress.
I oft recommend folks start with OVERKILL as I think that work gives you a Gorias tale in a nutshell. Action, adventure, demons, dragons, humor, magick, monsters, and sex. BORN OF SWORDS gives one a deeper peek within Gorias’ nature, but I show that hand every so often. I really enjoyed writing that one as well.
Yes, I intend to flesh out the tales hinted at in the pages already published. Not every idea comes up fast and ready. USURPER, the next Gorias novel, has festered with me for ten years. It’s probably the closest thing to a barbarian Romance I will ever write, but don’t get worried: It’s more like Game of Thrones meets Clive Barker than any romance work conceived. I’ve labored for years on this one, just unsure of how it will run…but at last I found the key and the ball is rolling like a freight train.
There are a number of concepts and folks running about in the works that I intend to give a bigger life to. Many ask if I’ll get to a sequel to THRALL and yes, I do have that figured out…but that won’t be the book after USURPER. I may just do a complete novel about Gorias’ daughter. That does sound like a challenging work to me as a few have thrown a couple spitballs my way that the females in some of my works get short sheeted. I disagree. Goliath’s mom in PHILISTINE is the only one he bowed to. His sister was…well, hell. Appra in OVERKILL? A real bad ass gal. Queen Garnet? A fierce lady. Wait until you all see Tancorix and Cerian in USURPER. His daughter will be epic…indeed.
The adventures and aspects of Gorias will continue until I don’t care to share them anymore, or one of my sons understands him and wants to carry on. Suffice it to say, I think I have enough ideas about him to last me for a number of years. He’s a fun guy to write about and live on through, and he still speaks to me, every so often. Clearly. The next tale is determined from what he decides to tell me next. Sometimes, he’s quirky and ya know, he drinks, so, ya never know what’ll pop out.
But it all will, in time…deliverance shall come, as it’s said…

Steven L. Shrewsbury lives, works and writes in rural Central Illinois. Over 365 of his short stories have been published in print or digital media since the late 80s. His novels include WITHIN, PHILISTINE, OVERKILL, HELL BILLY, BLOOD & STEEL, THRALL, STRONGER THAN DEATH, HAWG, TORMENTOR and GODFORSAKEN. He has collaborated with other writers, like Brian Keene with KING OF THE BASTARDS, Peter Welmerink in BEDLAM UNLEASHED, Nate Southard in BAD MAGICK, Maurice Broaddus in the forthcoming BLACK SON RISING and Eric S. Brown in an untitled project. He continues to search for brightness in this world, no matter where it chooses to hide.
Book Synopsis for Born of Swords:
Deliverance will come... But that is another story. What makes a legend but the stories told about him? Interviewing Gorias La Gaul, the biggest legend of them all, is a dream come true for young scribe Jessica. Where other girls her age would swoon beneath the steely gaze of the warrior, Jessica only has eyes for his mouth, and the tales that come from it...when he takes a break from cursing or drinking. Unfortunately for Jessica, Gorias doesn't really have time to babysit. She's found him in the midst of an annual pilgrimage of sorts, and though he agrees to let her come along, it's not without a warning: You may not like what you see and hear. Just don't come crying afterward. Whether viewing past visions with magical gemstones or jumping into the fray alongside the barbarian, Jessica's about to get firsthand accounts she won't soon forget...and discover legends are far from reality, and just as far from being pretty. You wouldn't expect a youth of love and friendship from the greatest killer to walk the Earth, would you? These are tales of some of Gorias' earliest days, back before he'd found his swords, to a time when a dragon needed killing. Tales back before his heart had hardened. Maybe. For most men, the future is not certain and the past is prologue. For a legend like Gorias La Gaul, even the past is up for debate. One thing is for certain about these tales. They will be bloody. Such is always the way for a man... Born of Swords...
