Doris Lessing and the Perils of the Pseudonymous Novel

ARTICLE BY JAMES LASDUN VIA THE NEW YORKER

lessingIn the early nineteen-eighties, a literary agent in London sent the manuscript of a first novel titled “The Diary of a Good Neighbour,” by a certain Jane Somers, to the publishing company Jonathan Cape. Cape still maintained the old-fashioned practice of employing in-house readers, and the manuscript duly appeared in their office, on the shelf reserved for agented material, guaranteeing it prompt and serious attention. Of the half-dozen or so men and...

Is Patrick Bateman the Next Dexter Morgan?

patrick_bateman

I guess we should have seen this coming. With one of FX’s biggest show, Dexter, on the cusp of a series finale, FX is seeking out fresh blood… and it’s going to come to us via Bret Easton Ellis’s 90′s cult classic, American Psycho.

Here’s what LitReactor has to say about it:

In 1991 Bret Easton Ellis published his controversial look at a serial killer,American Psycho, which titillated and provoked in equally extreme measure, or so it seemed. Then in 2000, the plot was turned into a movie starri...

The Psychology of Abandonment

books

Goodreads has put together a pretty interesting infographic about book abandonment. Which books are abandoned most, and why do people put them down?

Of the books listed in the infographic, I’ve given up on two. The first, much to the chagrin of my husband, was The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I loved the movie, but the book is mind-numbingly dull for the first hundred or so pages–too many for me to slosh through for the good stuff. I’m of the opinion that a book should be engaging right out of...

The Cruelty of Wizards: JK Rowling, Author in Disguise

jk-rowling-the-cuckoos-callingSo, by now we’ve all heard the story about how JK Rowling pretended to be Robert Galbraith and releasedThe Cuckoo’s Calling with zero fanfare. Except that may not actually be the case. Yes,The Cuckoo’s Calling was published under a pseudonym; lets not get into the fact that Rowling is yet again hiding behind a male persona (‘JK’ was used because it was feared ‘Joanne’ wouldn’t be well-received by little wizard-loving boys)–but the fact remains that just because you use a nom de plume does not...

50 Places Every Literary Fan Should Visit

LIST VIA FLAVORWIRE

If you’re like us, and you hear that you’re in an area that is home to a place that has any little bit of literary historical significance, you have to go and visit it. Since (statistically speaking) there’s a pretty good chance that you’ll soon be hopping in your car or your friend’s car, or boarding a train, bus, plane, or some other mode of transportation that will bring you to another place that isn’t the city you spend the rest of the year living in, we’ve compiled thi...

Slash Co-Produces “Nothing Left To Fear”

248046_10151569762140742_1983255571_n

Slash has joined the ranks of Rob Zombie by co-producing a horror feature titledNothing Left To Fear. The movie will be released is “select theaters” on October 4th, and will make it onto Blu-ray and on-demand… four days later? Weird. I’d expect this thing to get a bigger push than that, especially since Slash has an army of fans that’ll be clamoring to see where his creativity takes him beyond the realm of music.

Here’s what Slash had to say:

As a long-time fan of the Horror genre, I want to p...

So, You Just Had Your Book Published

9232704354_8214c77ce1_z

BY CHUCK WENDIG VIA TERRIBLEMINDS.COM

So, you just had your book published.

And you want to know what’s going to happen now.

Here is — roughly, potentially, maybe— one scenario.

For a variable amount of time, let’s call it a week, you’re going to be flying high. Hell, flying highdoesn’t even cover it. You’re going to be flitting around the big blue heavens with a pair of magical laser dolphins as shoes. You’re going to bepast the moon. You’re going to feel like you’re snorting comet dust and making...
