Rachel McKibbens: for Jyoti Singh Pandey

Rachel McKibbens: for Jyoti Singh Pandey:

rachelmckibbens:

Her father wants us to know her name. “My daughter did nothing wrong,” he says, and he is right. I wish I could write a letter to this man’s heart, let him know how many of us share his daughter’s name: Jyoti, Hindu for light.

I think of the inevitable language of obituaries: “survived by…

December 2012

By December I felt the itch to return home, but I made sure to enjoy myself in New Orleans, Alabama, Georgia, and DC as best I could with my desperate longing for the familiar. When I came home I literally cried hysterically for 20 minutes just holding my puppies. I was home for Christmas. Everything was warm. My past so gorgeous, my future so possible, but my present so present. So comforting and beautiful. It was a great ending to honestly the best year of my life. Thank you, thank you, thank you world.

November 2012

Arguably the best month of the year and of tour, I stopped in Portland, San Francisco, Vegas, Tuscon, Phoenix, Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Oklahoma City. When I hit the west coast I pulled over and ran my fingers through the Pacific Ocean, astonished that I made it all the way from one coast to the other. I felt a sense of being able to do anything I set my mind to. I was doing it! I felt so small next to a giant redwood tree in Northern California, or overlooking the Grand Canyon, but I had made it there myself. I was bigger than I thought. I would often cry actual tears of gratitude for how blessed I was. I fell in love with the West Coast all over again. I was to-the-brim with joy and amazement. I was free.

October 2012

For the October portion of my poetry tour, I did shows and workshops in several cities in Wisconsin, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Canada, and Washington. Miles visited me in Wisconsin and helped me drive to Colorado. Panda visited me in Vancouver and took the boat over with me to Victoria. I really began to appreciate pieces of home while being so far away. I stayed feeling blessed about my life, stayed adventuring the fuck out of everything, stayed giving all my heart into my performances too. I evolved with every mile.

September 2012

I had a tour send-off party at my favorite local coffee shop and just like that, I was gone. My entire life packed away into my car and 100 days of poetry, performance, traveling and unfamiliarity ahead of me. In September I did shows and workshops in Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan. I began the tour super-excited to see as much as possible and really live it. I took myself to art museums, on hikes, walks around cities, exploring coffee shops, food and local oddities. It was a month of new beginnings, adventure, exploring and feeling blessed to be touring the country and supporting myself on art alone. Here are a few goofy shots from that first month of travel.
