Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922)Wow. The Mayfair theatre was amazing enough to screen this last night and tonight with accompanying original music. Nothing short of wondrous. I’d never seen the restored version and it is beautiful. For more on the differences and a detailed look into this film for those who have not seen it or don’t understand its cultural significance, read here. Sure, I’d watched Nosferatu before but trust me – with one continuous syth/guitar piece and the restoration, it was a whole new experience.

31 Days of Horror – October 22
Berkshire County (2014)
Retitled as ‘Tormented’ apparently, I’d have not put this and ‘Torment’ together necessarily, though they do certainly share the common home invasion with masks by a group theme. This is maybe the less dark of the two, but I wanted something a little Halloweeny… with pig masks… and this is what I landed on. Directed by Canadian Audrey Cummings, the biggest plus this film has is great suspense. Not the kind that leads you around by the hand either, but by a far more gentle method of creeping tension.
It really ramps up from the midpoint on and I must say that I enjoyed this film very very much!

31 Days of Horror – October 21
Meteletsa – Winter of the Dead (2012)IMDB or Wiki
Russia’s first zombie movie is a pretty good installment to the 0-day infection camp. While the action effects are sometimes a little too digital, there are loads of practical effects to be had. LIke buskets of body parts? And not just little buckets either – like, front end loader size buckets. I’m not kidding. Wanna see body parts strewn over every scene? Meteletsa has it covered. I am a huge fan of one character – Father Michael. Wow. I’ve seen some men of the cloth kick arse for the lord, but this guy is my new hero. I’d say it is worth it for him. A few of the scenes in the trailer are the highlights of gore, as usual, but the sheer amount of dead makes up for them blowing their load there. Unlike most films that do that, it’s not just sloppy seconds. Sure, the story is over-wrought and the acting is good but not great (with the exception of Father Michael) but this beats the hell out of any Asylum installment to horror.

Old 37 (2015)
IMDB but no English Wiki
I’ve been picturing some sort of gore fest crossover with Bringing Out The Dead from this. While not quite that smart, Kane Hodder and Bill Moseley are perhaps aging directly into really cool roles like this, and it works for me. Nothing like a good old Alan Smithee horror movie! With a Lloyd Kaufman cameo no less! Not sure why the director felt the need to divorce himself from this as it’s not all bad. The soundtrack didn’t fit until the last 20 minutes and was hella repetitive, and I could have done with a little more of the ‘paramedics’ up front and less teens, but still, a decent rental. A good counterpart to Charlie’s Farm which features a bit of Hodder and Moseley as well.
American Horror Story: Freak Show E01 (2014)
Well. Not horrid. I’ve heard the season takes a nosedive, but that remains to be seen by me. I’m looking forward to Hotel and may play catch up instead of waiting a year like I did for this. Oddly, I’d just finished a story that would have been very at home here, and have a collection of hotel theme shorts in development.

Bride of Re-Animator (1990)
After taking in the first film for Dead Air, I figured I’d better get onto the sequels. ‘Bride’ is every bit as dark as the first if only a little less slapstick. A very enjoyable tangent off the original story.

31 Days of Horror – October 18
At the Mayfair Theatre for a night, and I took in 30 short horror films. It wasn’t as arduous as it sounds, since they were split into two anthologies…
Tales of Halloween (2015)
Another great entry into the Halloween anthology sub-genre. A sub-genre with maybe four films in it? Sure. While not as dear to me as Trick ‘r Treat, there was candy, costumes and carnage galore. The cameos made it fun, as did how each story was woven in among the others. Having watched The Fog just the other day, hearing the voice of Adrienne Barbeau over the airwaves was a treat. Or a trick? I can’t tell. All in all, the Sweet Tooth episode was my star, and seeing what Lucky McKee has been up to was worth it.
The Monster Pool Anthology (2015)
This contained 20, yes Twenty, local filmmakers entries into this ‘with a catch’ anthology. The running theme was the story had to incorporate a key, and feature one monster they were assigned. The Clown entry was great, as was Pandora’s box, the crazy ex, and resurrectionists.

31 Days of Horror – October 17
The Fog (1980)While this was one of my parent’s go-to films for a while, I hardly remembered it. Outside of popular quotes, clips and images, it was pretty… foggy in my mind. That was maybe just as well as I can see why John Carpenter himself was dissatisfied with this. While the remake is even less remarkable, there are many saving graces here. The acting, setting and everything visual and audible is great. The story is scattered for something so simple. I hate to say it would have made an excellent television episode, but it is what it is. The score is amazing, and I do love the long dead and vengeful spirits. A fine film for a foggy morning and a great example of patterns in his film repertoire, but not the hit of the past century. Maybe a great drama for those who don’t necessarily enjoy gusty and whiz-bang horror and are looking for something brooding.

31 Days of Horror – October 16
Clownhouse (1989)Aside from the terror the director stirs in the hearts of boys and men, Clownhouse definitely works on that same level. It’s right up there with any creepy home invasion slasher with all the atmosphere of Something Wicked This Way Comes. I can see how Jeepers Creepers became the hit that it is, coming from this a decade earlier. I’m interested in seeing the first film from Salva, Something in the Basement, as the poster makes a guest appearance, then to see if either film makes its way into the Jeepers series, now that I’ve jumped this hoop. I love scary clown films and this is now on the top of the pile.

31 Days of Horror – October 15
13 Ghosts (1960)It’s weird that I’ve never watched this. There was a great selection of older horror at the rental store I frequented ten to fifteen years ago and I went through some of the more occult and paranormal classics then, but skipped this. Then, the remake became a real favourite and I still missed the original. Glad I finally took the time to watch it. It’s right up there with classic Addams Family as far as fun, and while not as macabre as, say, I Bury The Living, it’s one I think more people could stand to see.

31 Days of Horror – October 14
Halloween: Resurrection (2002)Ugh. My least favourite of the series. Why am I doing this… oh yeah, for the opening sequence. This was kind of one of the earliest video and cell technology enhanced storylines that was remotely watchable other than FeardotCom which came out the same year. I had wanted to watch the original 13 Ghosts this evening but that’s likely getting pushed to tomorrow.
