31 Days of Horror – October 14

Halloween: Resurrection (2002)

IMDB or Wiki

Ugh. My least favourite of the series. Why am I doing this… oh yeah, for the opening sequence. This was kind of one of the earliest video and cell technology enhanced storylines that was remotely watchable other than FeardotCom which came out the same year. I had wanted to watch the original 13 Ghosts this evening but that’s likely getting pushed to tomorrow.

The 31 Days of Halloween ‘Challenge’ is where you take in one or more horror films per day during the month of October. Aside from networks airing more horror for the month, many forums and social networking sites do the same. See what others are watching on The Mortuary.

31 Days of Horror – October 13

Scream Park (2013)

IMDB or Wiki

I enjoyed this way too much. Certainly one I will be watching again, and may even try to snag a copy of my very own. Not only does it feature what appear to be a duo of backwoods slashers in a horror amusement park, two of my heroes are featured: Doug Bradley and Nivek Ogre. What more could a girl want! Super low budget aside, the ambient music is great and the kills, plot and characters are pretty on point. Added bonus: Arvin Clay. I’d adored his photography for Gloomth, then (small world) ended up on an episode of Kettle Whistle Radio with him, Dave and Taddy. He was the makeup and effects director for this and did a damn fine job of it. I figured the films I ended up with for the 13th would be lucky!

Halooween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

IMDB or Wiki

Ya know, I haven’t watched this in about 25 years? Maybe longer. I recall singing the Silver Shamrock song in, like, grade school. Having succumbed to the tide, I was displeased that this didn’t follow Michael, but now that I rewatch it – I like it a lot. It’s like the Willy Wonka of Halloween where the oompah loompahs are sedated Matrix agents.

Horror Writer’s Association – New Releases – October 12, 2015

image

My favourite time of year will coincide with another one of these new release promotions, making October extra spooky for readers. Blood and Rain has been getting a lot of face since its release, and there are eleven more where that came from!

So, for the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, let us give thanks for creepy horror novel artwork! Check out the new release wall at the Horror Writers Association site for more eerie eye-candy and where to purchase.

31 Days of Horror – October 12

Witchouse (1999)

IMDB or Wiki

For a film that takes place on May Day, this is just as Halloweeny as it’s current counterparts. Pumpkins, tricks, treats, and a lot of creepy candlelit mansion in this one. I’d wanted to see Witchouse for a while, and had a lot of fun with it. Like Goosebumps for grown ups? Depends on your definition of grown up I suppose. Seeing this so close to Night of the Demons, it feels very close to that and other movies ten years older.

Halloween (2007)

IMDB or Wiki

Following my viewing of Halloween I, II, IV and V I figured the two Rob Zombie installations would be a better fit here. The first is my favourite of the two.

Halloween II (2009)

IMDB or Wiki

The first half of this is interesting to me as a Halloween movie, and the second half is interesting… but as a separate idea entirely. I’d only watched each of these once when they first came out so it’s nice to revisit them.

31 Days of Horror – October 11

Halloween5Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)

IMDB or Wiki

These two act as counterparts much like Halloween I and II do, so I had to watch them back to back as well. This is one of the least watched of the series for me, and the only one I watch less is part 3. I don’t know why, as this is more fun than, say, Halloween: Resurrection (2002).

Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)

IMDB or Wiki

And speaking of fun, this all reminds me that for about 5 years in a row I was dressed as a clown for Halloween when I was just younger than Michael and Jamie were when they got all stabby. Perhaps 8 years old is really a little old to be dressing as a clown.

White Rabbit (1989)

IMDB or Wiki

A new one for me, and a random Netflix pick. Films dissecting madness, isolated communities and dysfunctional social relationships really pique my interest. Throw the polarizing and potentially upsetting confusion surrounding the killing of animals and I’m there.

31 Days of Horror – October 10

Welcome to the super sized edition ~ As I was recording with Wes and off work for the day, I took advantage of the time and almost accidentally watched 5 films. One was a short, and believe it or not, I went grocery shopping and did some reading and housekeeping too.

HalloweenNight of the Demons (1988)

IMDB or Wiki

This is the next episode of Dead Air, so I will let the podcast tell all once it is posted next week. Suffice it to say, while the third entry to this series has it’s charms – this is really the best one.

Family First Bloodthirst (2015)

Just watch it on Youtube

As I had listened to the most recent episode of Bind Torture Kast (as noted in my Last Girl entry) just the day before, they had included a bonus review of this short film. There are scounds of short horror films on Youtube and Vimeo, and I really like when one gets a little attention so I had to check it out. The final act is well worth it, and the whole short is very well put together. Glad I took the few minutes to squeeze this one in.

Ghoul (2015)

IMDB or Wiki

After listening to my pal David Fairhead interview Joe Lynch for Kettle Whistle Radio, I decided to try and get my hands on Everly (finally) and rent Ghoul. Ghoul had been on my watch list as I was drawn to the idea of the spirit of Andrei Chikatilo coming back. A family favourite film in the Peever household was Citizen X (1995) for a time, and the story of the most dastardly serial killer of all time really stuck with me. Couldn’t find a way to see Everly though. If you like Joe Lynch though, we did cover Wrong Turn 2 on Dead Air.

Halloween I (1978)

IMDB or Wiki

I watch this every year it seems, though it also feels like I haven’t watched it enough. One half homework, and one half ‘seasons greetings’ for me, it was nice to watch this one all over again if only to set me up for my darling…

Halloween II (1981)

IMDB or Wiki

… Mister Sandman. Yes, this song runs though my head all of the time and I know it is thanks to this. Often pegged as my favourite horror film, it really has pretty much everything I want from the genre. Anything missing can likely be found in any one of the Halloween series, including the Rob Zombie versions. I like them all. Some more than others.
