Hannah Lowe - High Yellow

Errol drives me to Treasure Beach It’s an old story, the terrible storm
swerving the dark country roads the ship going down, half the sailors
I think about what you will be, your mix drowned, half swimming the
white, black, Chinese, and your father’s slate waves, spat hard onto shore
Scottish-Englishness. We cross the Black River Smashed crates, bodies
where they shipped cane sugar and molasses choking on the black sand
upstream past a sign One man stands — What is this place? A woman
for Lover’s Leap....

Kissing Lessons

Lucy Dacus - "Kissing Lessons"

Rachel was a year older
when I was in the second grade.
I thought she might know everything.
I took her word like a golden ring.
I asked her how to win my man
and she said, “I know just the thing.”
Gave me lipgloss and a hair toss
and, after school, a lesson in kissing.
She called me by the name of her crush,
I couldn't decide if she was Cole or Justin.
I think I called her baby or darling most the time.
We’d take turns being seduced,
imagining the day it would come ...

Yusef Komunyakaa - Safe Subjects

How can love heal
the mouth shut this way?
Say something worth breath.
Let is surface, recapitulate
how fat leeches press down gently
on the sex goddesses eyelids.
Let truth have its way with us
like a fishhook holds
to life, holds dearly to nothing
worth say -pull it out,
bringing with it hard facts,
knowledge that the find underbone
of hope is also attached
to inner self, underneath it all.
Undress. No don't be afraid
even to get Satan mixed up in this
acknowledgment of thorns:
meaning there's madness
in the sp...

Dorothea Lasky - If You Can’t Trust the Monitors

If you can't trust the monitors
Then why do they have the monitors
If you can't trust the cars
Then why have the cars
If you can't trust that I think you're hot
Then why do you look so good
Turning me on that way that you do
If you can't trust the people
Then why have the people
If you can't trust the cards then why have the cards
If you can't trust this room then why have the room
Why not just an open space
Where you can be naked and fascinating
If you can't trust the milk in the bottles
Then why have the bo...

We were married on a rainy day, isn’t that how the song goes?
I wore black jeans and codeine,
I guess I wanted to make sure I seemed “relaxed”.

“It’s just for contractual reasons”, I explained, signing the papers,
as if I truly believed...

Anne Sexton - The Fury of Sunsets

Something
cold is in the air,
an aura of ice
and phlegm.
All day I've built
a lifetime and now
the sun sinks to
undo it.
The horizon bleeds
and sucks its thumb.
The little red thumb
goes out of sight.
And I wonder about
this lifetime with myself,
this dream I'm living.
I could eat the sky
like an apple
but I'd rather
ask the first star:
why am I here?
why do I live in this house?
who's responsible?
eh?
