SBB_TourBanner_UnderTheCovers copyGENRE: Contemporary Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
What if the one time you didn’t want love was when you truly needed it?
Forced to flee her abusive ex, alone with no support, Elle is determined to rebuild her life and protect her five-year-old son. Not one to take the easy road, she opens a bookshop café, but opening day almost ends in disaster. In the midst of this chaos, the last thing she needs is a man as charming as George Jones getting in her way.
George has always been a sucker for a damsel in distress, and Elle ticks all the boxes. But Elle’s not interested in being rescued by anyone, especially not him. She knows her taste in men can’t be trusted, but fighting George’s charisma is harder than she expected. And George, who is not one to ignore an itch, has found there’s something about Elle that’s got under his skin.
When Elle’s ex turns up to cause trouble, George must overcome his boyish flirtatiousness if he’s to convince Elle to trust herself and let him into her life. But can Elle put her past behind her before it overwhelms her present?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

This is their first kiss. They’ve just come from an altercation with Elle’s ex and she’s angry that George stepped in because it made matters worse. George is trying to explain why he did what he did.

MediaKit_BookCover_UnderTheCovers“I said we were friends, didn’t I? I wouldn’t let any of my friends – Piper, Imogen, Libby, Adrian, Chris – face what you’ve had to face alone. It’s not who I am.”

“But I asked you not to.”

He nodded. “I know and I’m sorry I made it worse. I couldn’t stand by and watch you face that bully by yourself. I care for you.” He brushed away the tear that had escaped her eye. “I should have trusted you had everything under control.”

Her anger deflated.

She squeezed her eyes shut. She didn’t want this, this kindness, this caring, these warm and contented feelings that were being stirred up inside her. She couldn’t trust those. She’d felt those with Dean and she’d been oh so wrong about them.

But, damn, she was tempted.

George stepped closer, gathering her into his arms, and she didn’t resist. How could she? She wanted to be able to lean on someone, even if only for a minute.

Giving in to the temptation, Elle wrapped her arms around his waist and felt him relax.

He was as uncertain as she was.

That made her smile.

George stroked her back, sending lovely, shimmery warmth everywhere. She gave herself a minute to enjoy it and then stepped back.

His eyes captured her; something in them said he would protect her, that he cared for her.

After five years of having no one she could turn to for help, the invitation was beyond enticing. She wanted someone she could rely on, someone she could talk her worries over with, someone to just be there.

But was she wanting too much?

George watched her, waiting. He was letting her make the choice. He was giving the power to her.

That was what made her decision for her.

She leaned forward and kissed him.

PICTURE ME by Amy Schisler

A MYSTERY….SBB_TourBanner_PictureMe copyAmy will be giving a $25 Amazon/B&N Gift card to one lucky commenter/entrant!

BLURB:

MediaKit_BookCover_PictureMeMelissa Grant has escaped the clutches of death, not once, not twice, but three times. While she considers this to be divine intervention, her assailant is sure that her luck will run out, and the authorities are suspicious that Melissa isn’t as innocent as she seems. Implicated in the murders of two of her closest friends, and running from both a hit man and the law, Melissa does what is thought to be impossible in the 21st Century – she disappears.

Julie Lawson has no family, no friends, and no past. She spends her days photographing the country and her nights tossing and turning as nightmares plague her sleep. While passing through the town of St. Brendan, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Julie finds some things she hasn’t had in a very long time – a home, friends, and love. For the first time in two years, Julie can see her future, but she can attain it only by surviving a predator from her past. Eric West has a past of his own that he is trying to forget. His return to his hometown keeps his demons away until he meets Julie, and she stirs up emotions in him that he hasn’t felt in a long time. As he slowly begins to let go of this past, Eric tries to break down the walls that Julie has so tightly built around herself. Gaining her trust one small act at a time, and hiring the best investigator in DC to dig for answers, Eric opens the Pandora’s Box to Julie’s past which threatens all of their futures.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
Julie hadn’t thought to bring a flashlight with her and now regretfully acknowledged one of the many pitfalls of no longer owning a smartphone.  As darkness fell, she picked up her pace, unsure of how much farther she had to go until the end of the trail.  Surely it was safe to be out here in the dark at night, right?  This was a small town, after all.  An owl hooted, and the hair on the back of Julie’s neck stood.  Once again, she felt that familiar feeling that jump-started her heart to begin thumping in her chest.  She was not alone.
A Public Speaking Engagement – Dear Me!
20141226_171404Happy Friday!  It’s a rainy day here in Houston.
Yesterday, I did a presentation to our Women’s Discussion Group at Country Place (where I live).  I prepared a PowerPoint presentation about my 5 books, including the covers and the book video for all but one (which I couldn’t get to work). This video I had created myself for Cardinal Desires.  The link on YouTube works fine.
The ladies loved the book videos.  Now, in front on a group of people, holding a microphone, isn’t my favorite place to be, but it was fun, and I sold some books!
Here is the link for Cardinal Desires video from YouTube.  Comments on it will be more than welcome.  I think it was my third attempt at making a video.  The second link is the book video for Gamblers’ Choice, soon to be released from The Wild Rose Press, which was created for me by author Toni V. Sweeney.
About the author
Anna
Anna Albergucci lived the first part of her life in Tennessee, and then moved to Oklahoma where she met and married her high school sweetheart. They’ve since made a life together in West Texas, and that romance shaped a happy home that has grown from a family of two to a family of eleven, plus three dogs.
Even as a child, Anna had a strong imagination, forcing her poor mother, and anyone who would listen, to sit through the telling of her intricate dreams from the night before. Lucky for them she now puts that inspiration to paper, weaving her stories into deeply passionate characters that live lives the rest of us only dream about.
Anna loves mornings, coffee, and sitting on the porch appreciating her life. She’s a sucker for hosting parties, especially historical costume parties. And in her spare time, you can find her touring old mansions – preferably not haunted ones – shopping for antiques, or curled up reading her favorite romances, paranormals, and thrillers, whether historical or contemporary.
The Fall of the Midnight Scorpions by Thea Landen
PRIZE TO BE WON!! READ ON!!
The Flaws of Romance
Fiction needs conflict to be compelling. Romance sometimes gets a bad rap for being light and fluffy and not as “serious” as other genres, but I’d argue it’s especially crucial in romance to have those flawed characters and imperfect situations. After all, who wants to read about two nice, attractive, well-adjusted people meeting each other, deciding to date, and having everything work out swimmingly for them? Even though that’s probably what happens in real life much of the time, it’s not very interesting.
Enter Ro, the main character of The Fall of the Midnight Scorpions. In a way, it was easy to create her flaws when writing because the book is a sequel. In its predecessor, Disintegration, she serves as the love interest and not the protagonist, but she comes out of that book worse than how she went in. I already had a foundation established, a backstory, a series of events and experiences to shape her.
She has loved and lost. (Twice, actually.) She has seen and done terrible things, which she admits to readily. Some of those terrible things she feels little to no guilt over (while others do keep her awake at night). She keeps people at arm’s length, afraid to let them get too close. She’s flippant, sarcastic, and acknowledges she sometimes acts like a bratty teenager.
Is this groundbreaking stuff, a totally unique characterization? No, not really. I don’t even want to count up how many documented tropes I included in the previous paragraph. And I’m sure that as soon as readers see “afraid to let anyone get too close” for any character in any story, they know exactly where the plot is headed. (Spoiler alert: someone gets close.) But even though it’s all been done before, would the book still be as engaging if she didn’t have a checkered past and she readily accepted the hero into her arms? Probably not.
Since I brought up the topic of common tropes, I’ll pose the question to readers here: What are your favorite (or least favorite!) flaws you like to see in your romantic leads?
The Fall of the Midnight Scorpions (Sequel to Disintegration)
midnightScorpion-510
Can Ro and her teammates take down a dangerous mercenary organization and find her lost love?
BLURB:
A year has passed since Ro Bernard escaped from the Midnight Scorpions, a clandestine group of mercenaries that exists in the outside world as little more than myths and rumors. Though haunted by the reprehensible acts she committed and witnessed as a member of the organization, her primary focus is keeping a roof over her head and food on her plate. A chance encounter leads her to Karin Cassels, whose son died in the Scorpions’ underground laboratory. While sharing details about her son’s research, Ro reveals the most disturbing information she has on the group. Their leader, scientist Dane Zedek, has been integrating cybernetic parts with human soldiers in the hopes of building himself a lethal army that will help him achieve even greater political power.
The women hatch a plan to take down the Midnight Scorpions with two ultimate goals: kill Zedek, and rescue Callum, Ro’s lover who was the first of the scientist’s experimental hybrids. For additional assistance, Dr. Cassels directs Ro to Reggie Quinn, a drifter who is no stranger to odd jobs and risky situations. Reggie agrees to join the cause in exchange for a percentage of whatever they loot from the Scorpions’ base.
They embark on an adventure throughout three warring countries to assemble their team and gather the necessary materials for their schemes. Along the way, Ro tries to fight her growing attraction to Reggie, especially as reminders of her unhappy past keep resurfacing. Love and redemption wait for her at the end of her mission to defeat the Midnight Scorpions…assuming she makes it out alive.
Excerpt:
Ro pondered how many details to disclose and the best way to convey them for a few more steps. “I have a friend down there and I don’t know if he’s alive or dead. I didn’t have time to find out for sure before I escaped, and obviously I couldn’t take him with me.”
“So we add springing your friend to our list. I don’t see what the big deal is.”
She didn’t say anything.
“Oh,” Reggie said after a few beats of silence. “Let me guess, I stumbled across one of those love affairs I was joking about.”
“It wasn’t supposed to be that way. He was a project, an assignment, a responsibility.” The words tasted bitter as they rolled off her tongue. “And he deserved better than what he got.”
“From the Midnight Scorpions or from you yourself?”
“Both.”
The street shifted from asphalt to dirt beneath their feet. “If you loved him, I don’t think he got such a raw deal from you,” Reggie said quietly.
“Zedek and the lab rats were responsible for fucking up his brain and his body. His emotions, his soul, that was all on me.”
“It couldn’t have been that bad.”
“It was.” Nauseating guilt churned in her stomach, but she’d come too far to leave her confessions unfinished. “As soon as we started caring about each other, I should have walked away and put an end to it. Not only would it have been the professional thing to do, I knew nothing warm and bright and good could ever come from Zedek’s dark pit in the ground. I was right.”
“When things look bleak, people want to cling to whatever glimmers of hope they can find.”
“Are you referring to him or me?”
“Both,” he said, repeating her prior answer.
They trudged along the dusty paths. The settlement of gray and brown hovels appeared in the distance, swathed in the illusion of murky shadows despite the mid-day sun. Before they reached Ted’s house, Reggie grabbed her shoulder and spun her around to face him. “Look, Rosie, I’m not going to tell you not to beat yourself up over whatever happened with this guy,” he said. “You and I both have our skeletons and scars, and sleep comes easier some nights more than others. I’m not going to sit around and play psychiatrist with you, and you’d probably tell me to go fuck myself if I tried.”
Ro shrugged, though the motion didn’t dislodge his grip. “Very likely.”
“For what it’s worth, I don’t think you’re a horrible person, and I seriously doubt anything you could tell me would change my mind. I don’t go following just anybody into hideouts filled with hordes of deadly mercenaries, you know.”
She stared up into his gold-flecked eyes. “You’ve heard enough evidence that everything I touch turns to shit. Let’s just follow through with the plans Ted has helped us solidify and get the job done. Assuming we come out alive on the other end, we can then worry about whether your assessment was right or wrong.”
“Fine.”
They arrived at Ted’s door. “One more thing,” Reggie said as she reached for the knob.
“What?”
“Your friend, boyfriend, lover, whatever.” Sympathy softened the strong lines of his cheekbones and jaw. “We’ll find him and get him out, no matter what.”
Wealth and Privilege by Jeanette Watts
VBT_TourBanner_WealthAndPrivilege
Jeanette will be awarding a Victorian cameo to a randomly drawn winner (International) via rafflecopter during the tour
CommenterPrize
From Jeanette:
Coming home from a book signing this past weekend, I was struck by a thought for the zillionth time when I made one last trip to the bathroom before I boarded my plane.
There is a special level of hell reserved for the man who invented the automatic flush toilet.
I mean, really, WHAT were you thinking???  There is a perfectly good handle on the back of non-automatic devices.  When users are finished, they push on the lever, and there is an exchange of water.
Yes, occasionally one comes upon the unpleasant phenomenon of the unflushed toilet.  In all levels of society, in all public places, there is always that undesirable antisocial element – the ones who cut in lines, who spit their gum on the sidewalk, who leave the shopping cart in the middle of the parking lot, rather than walk the two yards to put it away in the cart corral.  Yes, and they failed at potty training when they were three years old.  There is a special level of hell for these people, too.
This is not sufficient reason, however, to punish every American who sets foot in an airport by inflicting all of us with automatic flush toilets.  It is an insupportable affront to human dignity, the most unspeakable of all public health atrocities.
We know the road to hell is paved with good intentions.  This is a perfect example of that principle.  It was a noble attempt to save humanity from the horrors of an unflushed toilet.  But- it simply inflicted worse horrors upon us – because they don’t work.
We all know the routine.  Walk into a stall – the toilet flushes.  Turn around – it flushes again.  When it stops spurting water on the backs of your legs, you pull down your pants or heist up your skirt, and sit down, bracing yourself for yet another flush – but this time, it fools you into thinking that maybe, just maybe, it’s going to behave now.  But then as you actually release the appropriate muscles to urinate, you make the fatal mistake of shifting your posture – a little forward, a little back, a little bit sideways.  It doesn’t matter.  It flushes again, now spraying your buttocks and possibly the backs of your thighs with a hundred little droplets of water.  Some of it, no doubt, is splashes of the very water you were trying to get rid of in the first place.
Eeeeuuuuuuu.
On a really good day, the accursed thing might get you twice between the time you sit down and when you drop the last bit of toilet paper into the bowl and stand back up.
And now, now the kicker of it all.
Once you actually WANT it to flush, it won’t.
You wave your hand over the sensor, look around for the manual override button.  These things usually have a flush button on them somewhere.
Which frequently seems to be broken – no doubt by other people in the same predicament as you are, being forced to use one of these automatic flush toilets.
It’s not fair.  You did NOT fail potty training at age 3.  You know how to clean up after yourself.  But there you are stuck, in a bathroom stall, your flight is now boarding, and your toilet paper is floating around in the bowl while you are powerless to do anything about it.  Out of ideas, all you can do is open the stall door and leave.
Some of the time, probably exactly half, the toilet will then flush after you have stepped out of the stall.  Oh, thank goodness, you mutter to yourself as you wash your hands.
The other 50% of the time, you have just been relegated by forces beyond your control to the level of people who cut in line, spit gum, and don’t put their shopping carts away.  Naturally, you will pass another person going INTO the stall you have just vacated, and for the next several minutes, that person – who just saw your face and could give an accurate description of you to the FBI, or TSA – is going to be thinking that you (oh, the indignity of it!) failed potty training at the age of three.
Such is the “glamorous” life of a writer.
BLURB:
Money. Family. Love. Hate. Obsession. Duty. Politics. Religion – or the lack thereof. Sex — or, once again, the lack thereof.
Thomas Baldwin finds himself married to a woman he can’t stand, while head-over heels in love with another woman he can’t have. Talk about bad planning. He feels like a kite, buffeted by circumstances which blow him not only through personal crises, but also through some of the most significant events in Pittsburgh during the late 1800s, including the railroad riots of 1877, the creation of the Homestead Steel Works, the assassination of President Garfield, and the Johnstown Flood. Over time, and with the help of his muse, who dances maddeningly just beyond his reach, he takes control of his life, wresting it from the winds attempting to control him.
A carefully-researched historical novel about life among the privileged class of Pittsburgh during the Industrial Revolution.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

A soft rumble of thunder sounded in the distance, and they both groaned.

“Just what we need,” Thomas observed.  “More water.”

“Well, I suppose thunder doesn’t necessarily mean more rain,” Regina answered hopefully.

It was an odd sort of thunder.  It took Thomas a moment to realize why.  Then it BookCover_WealthAndPrivilegeoccurred to him that it was continuous, and getting louder, instead of fading away.

A strange black fog began to drift through the air.  They froze, staring at each other, listening.  The rumble increased like – what?  It was a cross between an oncoming train, and – and – Thomas imagined this must be what an avalanche must sound like.

Then he knew what was going on.  The South Fork dam had broken!

Before he could share his insight, Regina’s face changed.  She stared up Clinton Street, mouth open, eyes wide with horror.  She pointed, incoherent noises issuing from her throat.  Thomas turned, and nearly fell off their precarious little raft.

The source of the crashing rumble was a towering wall of debris moving toward them.  A misty black cloud hung in the air, occasionally obscuring the horrific sight.  A writhing mass of tree roots, rooftops, planks, railroad pieces and other metal parts tumbled over and over upon itself.

The rumble had clarified into a roar of screaming and crashing as the rapidly approaching behemoth rolled toward them.   They couldn’t outrun it, either on or off their little craft.  Regina pointed to the nearest building.  The brick corners were coined, laid unevenly enough to make a decent ladder.  Thomas understood without a word.  They poled their way across the watery distance, desperation giving them strength and speed.
