How Do You Start a Business (Sole Proprietorship)?

So you want to start a business. The question on your mind now is: how?

Step 1: See if a business license is required in your county.

Not all counties require business licenses, but most of them do. Some counties don't require licenses, but individual cities (called "incorporated cities" — those cities having their own government) do.

If a license is required, go to your city/county government office. Your first stop is the Treasurer/Tax Collector's Office. This is where you apply for a...

Joshua Tree

Went to Joshua Tree today. It is really quite an interesting place. Apparently (at least, according to the video I saw when I stopped by the Visitor Center), the characteristic pile of rocks look is caused by volcanic activity deep underground that forms granite blocks, which the San Andreas Fault then pushes to the surface, where sand and wind erosion cause it to round into globs of rock.

The place is covered with these hairy (that's right, hairy!) trees that have spiky blades fanning out in ...

Convert All Underlines to Italics in Under 1 Minute (and Vice-Versa)

The Problem: Readers prefer accentuated words to be in italics, but editors/publishers prefer them to be underlined.

Reason: Italics are naturally smoother to read, so the eye skims over them easier. When preparing a document for publishing, underlines are necessary so the typesetter's eyes can pick out the accentuated words easier, and know which ones should be set as italics and which ones should be normal.)

The Question: How do I quickly convert all the underlined words in my document to i...

MY BOOK IS OUT!

My novel, Robin: Lady of Legend, has finally been published. Whooohooo! After sitting in my head for a decade and living in my head for the last year and a half, it is finally out! No going back, this is it, my first book has just been released into the ether of the internet. Yikes!

It's currently available on Amazon Kindle as well as my this website, and will be available on Barnes & Noble NOOK within the next day or so, and on the iBookstore in the very near future.

As a reminder of what the ...

Santa vs. Jesus (Score 1:0)

Am I missing something here? Since when did Christians start worshipping Santa Claus, not Jesus?

Every year, Calabro School invites students to take pictures with Santa Claus for $1.00. So far, no problem. Then this year, a Jewish parent objected that other religions weren't represented, and as a result the school rescheduled the photo shoot to include more diversity. All right, I'm cool with that. The final photo shoot featured a menorah (for Jewish Hanukkah), a kinara (for African...

Chain Letter Truth

A chain letter I recently received that unfortunately rings all-too-true…

The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on

CBS Sunday Morning Commentary.

My confession:

I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was

Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit

when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees,

Christmas trees… I don't feel threatened.. I

don't feel discriminated against.. That's what they are,

Christmas trees.

It doesn't bother me a bit when...

Calibre: Remove Paragraph Spacing, Not Indent Formatting

There is an easy way to remove the extra paragraph spacing that Calibre (an eBook converter) automatically inserts into your manuscript, without having to disrupt your indent formatting to do so.

Jump to the solution, or continue reading for the explanation

Calibre, in case you are unaware, automatically inserts a blank line after each paragraph in your book. While it does provide a way to turn off this feature (Under "Look and Feel" when you're converting your eBook, there is a box titled "...

Puppy!

I have discovered a new game by Doll-Divine called Puppy Maker! It lets you design your own puppy and let me just say, the results are adorable! The generator takes a little getting used to (the icons have no labels and there's no undo button) but it's certainly fun to play around with!

Here's my puppy. I'm toying with the name Shiyla =)
