Substack: Mud and Starlight

Dear readers,

I know I do not update this website very often any more. I am not good at being consistent. But more than that, I find WordPress honestly not the easiest to navigate in terms of finding content that appeals to me and people to connect with. And, perhaps following from that, it’s never been a place in which I find much engagement. Yes, I get likes on everything I post, but comments and discussions are few and far between. I get the impression that people are randomly clicking the...

Murmurations – the blog tour!

Today marks the beginning of the blog tour for my poetry debut, Murmurations, with Love Books Tours. Over the course of the next week-and-a-bit, bloggers and bookstagrammers from the UK and the US will be posting their reviews. To read along, follow me on Instagram (@sarahcominghome). I hope and expect that the reviews will also make their way to Goodreads and/or Amazon in the fullness of time.

I’m excited to get to share my work with a wider audience and to engage in conversation with other boo...

Poem: Natural habitat

Another post and a new (for you) poem to celebrate the release of my book, which can be bought here. This was one of those poems that came to me in its entirety while I was out walking in the woods. You never know when inspiration might strike…

Natural habitat

Here, we see the poet
in her natural habitat;
pen scratching against paper,
caught up in the moment,
tea going cold, light dimming
As if she was
born for this

Here, we see the hiker
in her natural hab...

My poetry debut – Murmurations – is now available

Dear all,

On this most auspicious day – my 42nd birthday – it is my pleasure to announce that my poetry debut, Murmurations, is officially available for purchase through the below link. Meaning you could have the e-book in a matter of minutes (the paperback naturally takes a bit longer)!

https://books2read.com/u/mYYAaW

The earliest of the poems found in the book is really what started this whole journey back in March/April 2020, during the first COVID lockdown in the Netherlands. It was when I g...

Updates: poetry reading, book release and newsletter delay

Things have gotten a little crazy with the whole book release and poetry reading thing the past few weeks. I was initially planning on sending out my next newsletter round about today (the 15th of Feb), but I don’t want to half-arse it, and I’ve been too busy not to, lately. I’m still aiming to have it sent by the end of the month, as I should have some more pockets of time over the next 1,5 weeks. The good news is you still have time to sign up to receive the latest version. You can do so here....

Poem: A normal butterfly + debut poetry collection

An old (but unpublished) poem to announce a new and exciting development:

On the 26th of February 2024, my debut poetry collection, Murmurations, will be available for purchase (and I will turn 42, thereby becoming the answer to life, the universe and everything ;-).  In fact you can already pre-order the e-book here and the Kindle edition here. The paperback will also be available through your regional Amazon shop starting the 26th of February. I am proud, overwhelmed and delighted to have fina...

Poem: Where I Do Roam

YT link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCreXMosgA8

Ambling, rambling, tumbling, twirling
I can see the sky is swirling
Wispy cloudy tendrils curling
Painting streaks across the sky
Gazing up at it am I

Call to me the birds who soar
Beetles of the forest floor
The chirp of crickets, nothing more
Fields of barley, wheat and rye
Gazing down at them am I

Call to me the winds so tender
Behold you now all natures splendour
Grasses thick and flowers slender
Open lands and oak trees high
Gazing round ...

Neurodiversity, high sensitivity, and autism spectrum disorder

By popular (?) request, here is my personal essay about neurodiversity that was also included in my March newsletter.

Disclaimer: I will primarily be discussing ASD in the low support needs category – previously referred to as “high functioning” and/or Asperger’s, as that’s where I fit in and it’s what I know most about. The autism spectrum is very diverse, and exactly that – a spectrum. If you’ve met one autistic person, you’ve met one autistic person – as the saying goes.

I have long known th...

A poem every day – week 8 / Birthday / Break

It has been an interesting experiment so far, and I’ve definitely written more poems in the past 8 weeks than in my life up to this point. I’ve also written at least 15 poems I think are good, which was as many as I had written in the past almost 3 years.  So, there is definitely something to be said for giving myself a little push. For working consistently on my craft. Unsurprisingly.

However, the past two weeks have been challenging, and I am starting to feel like Bilbo Baggins (butter scraped...

A poem every day – week 7

Whereas last week I felt I wrote several good poems, this week I feel like none have reached quite that level, though I do keep trying every day. February also seems to be whizzing by and there’s more stuff going on in general. Like today I am expecting my mum for a visit from Norway, and I’m very excited, so I’m not going to write much more now as I can’t focus and I have some preparing to do still.

I will leave you with two poems from this week, the first again being a haiku I composed in the ...
