A poem every day – week 6
This week I’ve written quite a few poems that I think are good, and I’ve been enjoying the challenge more again after a few rough weeks. I won’t say I’ve turned a corner, as I expect this is just the crest of one of many waves to come. It’s part of the process and part of what I set out to learn/discover.
Perhaps it also helps that the light has started to return and spring has begun to announce itself. It is only February and we could still get snow (two years ago at this time it was about -15c...

A poem every day – week 5
I’m still plugging away, and still keeping an open mind as to how to move forward. I am going to keep this week’s update short, as I have a bit of a cold and my contact lenses feel dry and fuzzy. But the sun is out, the days are getting longer, and I can feel optimism getting a stronger hold.
As I mentioned last week, I’ve been experimenting a little with haiku lately. Now it’s not a genre I know very well, so I welcome feedback and tips. I’ve read both that haiku should have titles and that the...

A poem every day – week 4
Dear readers,
As the fourth week of my attempt to write a poem every day in 2023 draws to a close (for more information, see my post from January 1st), I’m still having a lot of mixed feelings. I feel like I’ve done some good and interesting work, and I’m sure some of these pieces would never have come into existence if I hadn’t made myself sit down and finish a poem rather than just have a nice idea or sentence and then abandon it.
However, I am afraid of pushing myself into not enjoying the wo...

January 24th: Legitimate interest (A poem every day)
Today’s poem is just a bit of light-hearted fun. Don’t tell me I’m the only one who gets increasingly annoyed by this phrasing….
Poem 24: Legitimate interestYou are
not my friend
family member
confidant
I am not a minor
under your protection
I do not require a guardian
So I, Sarah Thompson,
being of sound mind and body,
wilfully and voluntarily
make the following declaration:
Fuck off with your cookies
Punk-ass internet Sith lords
Also available in haiku form:
There is no such thing
as legitim...

A poem every day – week 3
It’s getting harder (That’s what she said! – Sorry, we’ve been watching The Office of late…).
On the one hand I’m doubting the merit of this project. I often feel like “having to” write a poem every day means I end up with work that is partially unfinished but I need to wrap it up anyway for the sake of the project. Though this is perhaps good for me, as part of the reason I started the project is because I have a tendency to have a lot of ideas and bursts of inspiration, and write down a line o...
