Watching another person fuck up their own life is hard. I can forgive them for being flawed, if they are aware that what they’re doing is wrong and weak and take responsibility for it or try to get better. After a couple years, though, it’s hard. Give them a little distance and just try to be present for the good times. Let them make their own decisions, but don’t be a part of them, and encourage the good decisions. All you really can do.
I agree. Very well said. I come from a family of tragedy: mental illness, drugs, early deaths. I have had to really separate loving someone and giving them access to my daily life. It was hard when my dad died suddenly because I had less time with him than I might have liked, but he also knew if he wanted to interact with me he had to pull it together, so I had experiences I feel good about when we did see each other.

I really liked reading this reviewer’s point of view on Juicy Fruit. I agree that Johnny is an anihero, I mean there is even a discussion at one point between Johnny and Eddie about the role of the antihero in Westerns so yeah. Johnny is weak. He is a compromised individual and he doesn’t have the kind of strength and wisdom it would have taken for him to behave better. (And folks are really not having frank, honest conversations about a lot of these issues in 1989. The gay community is still ostracizing AIDS victims in a lot of circles. Pretending nothing was happening was a common reaction.)
I am curious though. Have you had people you love really fuck up their lives? Your life? What makes you forgive them? What does redemption mean anyway?

I’ve been starting to actually track my reading habits on goodreads lately. Sometimes it’s really hard for me to confess I totally didn’t finish that book on Buddhism but somehow found the time to read like 3 books about sexy gay wizards in one week.

‘treasured’ she whispers, aware that she is the only one missing her morally ambiguous awkward reluctant duo and their promised sexytimes
… LOL. Well since you put it that way here is CHAP 8 of Treasured. A few new characters, some of which may be familiar.
