It might be Lent, but this baby wanted free of his King Cake! I like his full head of hair.

The Student Prince
by FayJay

word count: 145248

Summary:

A Modern day Merlin AU set at the University of St Andrews, featuring teetotal kickboxers, secret wizards, magnificent bodyguards of various genders, irate fairies, imprisoned dragons, crumbling gothic architecture, arrogant princes, adorable engineering students, stolen gold, magical doorways, attempted assassination, drunken students, shaving foam fights, embarrassing mornings after, The Hammer Dance, duty, responsibility, friendship and true love…

This story was inspired by the thought of Prince William of Wales (and indeed the current Max von Hapsburg) studying at the University of St Andrews; it is also, as the title suggests, at least a little inspired by the operetta ‘The Student Prince’.

***

Just finished this and highly recommend it! It’s set in a Merlin AU but I don’t know anything about Merlin and it stood fine on its own. Really great witty dialogue, well written characters, lots of plot build up,  and just the right amount of angst.

"“Kipple is useless objects, like junk mail or match folders after you use the last match or gum..."

“Kipple is useless objects, like junk mail or match folders after you use the last match or gum wrappers or yesterday’s homeopape. When nobody’s around, kipple reproduces itself. For instance, if you go to bed leaving any kipple around your apartment, when you wake up the next morning there’s twice as much of it. It always gets more and more.”

“I see.”

“There’s the First Law of Kipple, ‘Kipple drives out nonkipple.’ Like Gresham’s law about bad money. And in these apartments there’s been nobody there to fight the kipple.

“So it has taken over completely. Now I understand.”

“Your place, here, this apartment you’ve picked—it’s too kipple-ized to live in. We can roll the kipple-factor back; we can do like I said, raid the other apartments. But—”

“But what?”

“We can’t win.”

“Why not?”

“No one can win against kipple, except temporarily and maybe in one spot, like in my apartment I’ve sort of created a stasis between the pressure of kipple and nonkipple, for the time being. But eventually I’ll die or go away, and then the kipple will again take over. It’s a universal principle operating throughout the universe; the entire universe is moving toward a final state of total, absolute kippleization.”

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick

I am thinking a lot about this kippleization theory in my time of moving. How and why did I ever own all of these things?

I am a nail tech and if you can tell me where the nails are torn I can tell you what I would recommend.

This is why I love the internet! I am mostly getting tears around where the “free edge” meets the “nail plate” I guess? If I catch them fast enough I file them out. (Is that a good idea?) Overall there is just a lot of peeling and breaking especially since I just spent a week building boxes for shipping art work and clawing vinyl lettering off the wall. I have an index finger with a big tear I’ve been patching with nail polish but I’m pretty sure it’s going to catch on something eventually.
