I honestly...

dewritten reblogged your post: New slash fic pet peeve: When every female…

I honestly don’t think it’s high school (though it may be immaturity), because I’ve seen it in stories by people out of high school and even college, albeit often more subtly; I think it’s a consequence of the narrative and the genre. In the first place, most slash is romance driven so the plot and most of the interactions taking place will be in regard to the romantic relationship. So in essence, the only interactions between female characters and the main (male) character are parsed down to the “essential” (to discuss the relationship and thus drive the romantic plot forward) and other interactions are cut. This leaves the interactions with females feeling out of place compared to those between him and his male friends who have a stronger narrative investment in him and his relationship.

I agree that it’s usually clumsily done and often the writer will make excuses like “women are aliens” through the male character’s perspective because they actually do notice that it is unusual but don’t know how to solve the problem more gracefully, but has a valid reason: moving the narrative. And I guess, if you want to think on a bit more ugly terms, the validation of homosocial interaction supports the homosexual relationship. (Not that it needs validation but there you go.)

New slash fic pet peeve: When every female character is trying to get the MC a boyfriend/digs for info about his relationships. Is this someone’s reality or just some writer fantasy about how women relate to gay men? Because I hang out with a lot of gays and 98% of the time we don’t really talk about that shit.

it’s how a certain subset of high school girls interacts with gays. kind of a messy collision between slumber-party-gossip culture and ‘oo i wanna see cute boys kissing’. i think seeing adult women written like that is a sign the writer is pretty young.

Haha, I had a crazy (but hot) girlfriend in high school, boys kissing were distant background noise to what my hormones were getting up to. Yeah it took me awhile to figure out what was so irritating for me about these fics and then I realized all the male side characters were actually friends with the MC and they might care if he gets the love interest (because they want the friend to be happy) but they are there because of the friendship and all these female characters were just being terrifying pushy idiots and I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do with that? Agree that from a ‘male’ perspective women look like aliens? It certainly makes me want to be more conscious of that the next time I write a female friend. I’m not saying I don’t think there should never be that nagging, care taking, banter thing between the guy and his gal pal but when they aren’t close friends and it isn’t solicited it’s somewhat creepy to me.

Phillipe (named after Philip K Dick) is my 7 year old rabbit. These last few months he has been getting worse and worse at walking, balance and keeping himself clean. He’s on an oral antibiotic and arthritis injections but so far no improvement. Everyday we have to wash him in the sink with baby shampoo, put diaper rash ointment on his bald butt and then he takes naps on my lap.

Lol it exists don’t worry!! All the time, it’s pretty wild.

Like men that surround themselves with women whose main topic of conversation with them is about relationships? Because lord knows I’ll gossip with my friends about their love lives but it isn’t really a fundamental part of our interactions.

I think the thing that bugs me is the portrayal of  women as domestic busy bodies that want everyone paired up….
