Potty Training for Parents
Back before I had children, way back before I had a husband at all, one of my friends and I had a good, smug, derisive laugh at her sister, who wouldn’t let her take her elementary aged nephew anywhere because she was afraid of public restrooms. That is, she was afraid of sending her son into a public restroom by himself, and she didn’t want anyone else taking him into the ladies room, so he couldn’t go anywhere without her. I mean, come on. What was going to happen in a restroom? Was she afr...

Stuff
I meet a lot of different people on a daily basis, and I have a lot of opportunity to reflect on choices, and consequences, and I think a lot about how our beginnings inform our middles and ends. I was extremely fortunate to have parents who thought my well being was important. I was extremely fortunate to have grandparents who thought the same. I had the good fortune to be surrounded by adults, who all did their best by me, and it’s made it possible for me to do even better for my child.
I’ve...

How About a Car Review?
The B family drove off to Florida in early August, and since our cars are closing in on 70 in dog years we decided to rent one for the trip. B arrived at the rental facility, where he was asked if he minded a few stains in the backseat. Since that’s where Thor was going to sit, he went to check it out. He said “a few stains” translated to “it looked like a murder had been committed in the backseat.” So, he said no to the Camry we had expected, and accepted the upgrade to a black-on-black-leat...

Movie Reviews: Guardians of the Galaxy and Blue is the Warmest Color
Guardians of the Galaxy
Yes. Yes, yes, yes. So much win.
Marvel has done it again, putting out a fun, family-friendly, action movie that everyone can enjoy. And 80s pop culture fans will be blessed again and again by the Reference Fairy.
We went to our second viewing today, this time watching it in 3-D at the IMAX theater. I think I actually enjoyed it more the second time around because I could just watch and be delighted by the things I knew were coming. On the first watch, I laughed out loud...

What I’ve Been Up To
Been forever, hasn’t it?
My excuse is that I’ve been a little busy. I’m not going to tell you why. I’m just going to post some links and let you see for yourselves ;)

How to Train Your X-Men
Two movies, same review: Loved it.
I rarely go into movies unspoiled. I like to know what happens, first of all, and I like to be able to decide if a plotline is worth my time. Also, if I care about a character, I get anxiety–I can’t enjoy the movie for worrying. However, for both the new X Men movie, and How to Train Your Dragon 2, I went in knowing little-to-nothing. So, I’m not going to tell you anything other than GO SEE THEM BOTH NOW. AT THE SAME TIME. TWICE. Really.
Okay, I’ll tell you to...

The only thing I love more than the smell of books, is the smell of my own books.
The only thing I love more than a shelf full of books at the bookstore, is my book on a shelf full of books at the bookstore.
The only thing I love more than a stack of my books, is TWO STACKS OF MY BOOKS! (And red velvet cake pops–I might love those more.)

Grab Bag of Thoughts
This is the first time I’ve sat down at my computer in a week. If you’d told me, fifteen years ago, that one day I would be able to use my telephone to do everything I had to wait to get home to do on my PC, I would have just thrown my wallet at you and yelled, “TAKE MY MONEY! I WANT THAT!” Kind of like I do with my phone service provider every month. (Side Note: Thor plays games on my phone. I’ve just had to remind him that if a call comes through while he is playing, he needs to let me know...

I went to two different high schools, so I get to celebrate two 25 year reunions this summer. I went to the first, last night.
29 years ago, in 1985, I started high school at Ursuline Academy. It was the 4th school I’d attended since arriving in Texas in 1981. I distinctly remember being dropped off before the front doors were open, and sitting down on the front steps feeling nervous, afraid, and a little ugly with my boy-short hair, braces, and tea-length uniform skirt. Okay, I felt a lot ugl...

Dominic Phillips is an enjoyable distraction from fashion designer Eve D’Amico’s loneliness, but there’s never been anything more between them than hot sex. Since he desires no commitment from her either, it’s pretty much the perfect arrangement…except for the fact that he’s da...
