Baltimore
Back in 1998, I was arrested on the side of a highway for an outstanding warrant having to do with an expired registration. I had gotten the original ticket five years prior, had taken care of the registration, and forgotten about the ticket. One Friday night, I came home from work to a letter informing me of the warrant. I put it in my purse, fully intending to take care of the situation on Monday. The very next day, I cruised through a yellow light, trying to turn onto the highway to get to...

When the Curtain Comes Down
The Listen To Your Mother Austin show was fantastic. I’m exhausted! Having spent two hours shellacking myself into a stage face that would last for another six hours probably has something to do with that. I sprayed so much Elnett on my hair and face, you could have tapped on me and heard a clacking sound. But, at least in the candid photos I’ve seen, I do have a jawline and a chin! While they are neither pronounced, nor particularly classic looking, they are natural and nice, and do not look...

Es Más Bello Vivir Cantando
Is there anything surlier, more easily embarrassed, or more ungrateful than a teenager? That’s a rhetorical question.
I was typical, vacillating between really wanting my mommy, and being so embarrassed by my mother I wanted to get bitten by a radioactive spider and develop laser vision so I could burn a hole in the ground to hide in.
My mom is a really good dancer. She’s got rhythm in spades, whereas I have rhythm in…no part of my body. This link will take you to proof. I show you this so th...

Triple Klutz, Triple Toe Loop
I love to watch figure skating. I did a bit of it in my youth, and while I was never good enough at it to be considered a contender to even warm a team’s bench, I was good enough at it that I felt like a gold medalist–rare enough in my life. In my mind, I am a great figure skater. In reality, I stay upright, can go pretty fast in a circle, can skate backwards, and make a tiny spin, but my signature move looks like this:
The big smile is included in my move because I am always just so happy t...

Ladies Who Listen
I really wanted to have more time to do this properly, but you know what happened? Uh, everything! So rather than not doing it at all, I’m still going to introduce you to the women of the Listen To Your Mother Austin cast, by plagiarizing the LTYM Austin posts about the cast. With my own additional information!
Shelley Schooley Oswaldis a freelance writer, blogger, coffee-addict, native Texan and mom. Whenshe’s not at her day job or performing her duties as taxi driver and swim-mom/cheerleade...

Best Feet Forward
I love playing with Ancestry.com. I love it even more now that I’ve discovered I share my 19th great-grandfather on my father’s mother’s side with a family of ladies I adore.
I came to the appreciation of Girlfriends in my mid-twenties. Up until then, I was the girl who liked to say she preferred the company of boys because girls were just so…ugh. The problem wasn’t the girls. The problem was the fact that we were all teenagers.
I had a couple of good girlfriends, girls who are still my frien...

Who’s Afraid of the Dark
I put The Boy to bed last night, and five minutes into my bath, there was a rapping at the door. “Moooooooooom?”
I asked what he needed, and he snuffled that he had a stomach ache because he was afraid. So, I drew the curtain shut and told him he could come in. He sat on the floor and put his toes up under the shower curtain so I could touch him. I asked him what he was afraid of, and he said he wasn’t sure. He thought maybe it was just the dark.
“I’m afraid of a lot of stuff,” I told him. “I...

Lashing Out
My boy and I are enjoying an evening of Whataburger and Iron Man*. Bacon and RDJ. Yessah!
I’m in the process of art for two different books, reading three manuscripts, and still trying to get my look together for LTYM. It takes time to create a look, and my most recent addition was a set of lash extensions.
I bought a Groupon to Fawn Spato give their services a try.
I’ve done lash extensions before. The first two times, I had very sloppy applications. The third time, I had great application,...

About Face
As you know, I am gearing up for the Listen To Your Mother Austin performance. We have two shows on Saturday, April 25, at 3pm and 7pm, and one of those will be video’d for distribution on the LTYM YouTube channel. If you’ve read more than three posts here, you know that I am more than superficially concerned with my appearance, so in preparing for the show, I decided I needed to brush up my contouring skills.
See, I have a very soft jawline. This means that from certain angles (like the one...

Were You Born? Then This Book is for You.
A year ago, Robyn and I set out to start our own publishing house because we love to read, we love writers, and we wanted to be able to bring new voices to a wider audience. The very first project we started work on was our essay collection, Mommie Diarist.
Today, Mommie Diarist arrives.
I am prouder than I thought possible, and I love that I get to share it with you. I hope you’ll grab a copy for yourself because this book is truly for anyone who was ever born.
