Weekend Trip to Bilzen: Day #2
Yesterday, I posted about how we spent last weekend at Bilzen, and discussed in detail the first day of our three-day trip. Today I’m going to post about our second day at Bilzen, when we actually visited Sint-Truiden, and the fun things you can do there.
Trudopas
The second day of our weekend, we headed to Sint-Truiden, a small city about 20 km’s away from Bilzen, where our hotel was at. We parked near the city center and bought the Trudopas for both of us. I actually recommend buying this, as it’s quite cheap (4 euros) and gives you access to quite a few attractions.
With this pass, we visited the abbey tower (pictured below). I didn’t dare to take any pictures on top of the tower, as I’m afraid of heights and I was too busy holding on to anything – literally, anything – I could find, since the floor was made of steel plates which you could see through (with tiny holes in them). Terrifying for anyone who is even remotely afraid of heights, I’d say! But still, worth the climb just to get a view of the city.
A downside is that there was not that much information about the abbey showed while climbing the tower, but luckily we found more information when heading down the crypt. The crypt, by the way, was pretty awesome.
It doesn’t look that spooky now, since there’s still a lot of light coming through, but it was actually pretty spooky. We were in there all by ourselves, too, which was awesome.
This creepy figure is not a ghost, don’t worry, but it’s my boyfriend. But this just goes to show how creepy those crypts really were. Awesome inspiration for a horror author, though.
The Church
Third stop on our day was the church in the town square. The church was gorgeous, and it had a huge pipe organ. Someone actually started playing it while we were there. The church also had information about all the artworks in there, so we spend at least an hour inside, exploring all the nooks and crannies.
At the other side of the church was of course, the altar, and also some magnificent paintings incorporated into the ceiling.
After visiting the church, we also visited a museum about St. Franciscus of Assisi. The museum was very interesting, and we spent at least an hour inside exploring it, but for some reason, I forgot to take any pictures. Bummer. But if you’re ever in St. Truiden, I definitely recommend visiting the ‘Museum de Mindere‘ in St. Truiden, worth a visit and it’s free of charge!
Last but not least, we also visited another church near a cloister, and this church was very, very old, and still had some original artwork. It’s actually considered Unesco Heritage, and I can see why.
Unfortunately, we then had to hurry back to our parking spot since our time was up (we’d paid for the maximum amount of hours, but that was only 4, and time flies when you’re having fun!).
Castle Alden Biesen: Part Two
You might remember that I mentioned that the day before, we’d taken part in a nightly tour of the Alden Biesen castle. Well, now it was still day out and we’d been forced to retreat to our hotel thanks to parking limitations, we decided to take another walk to the Alden Biesen site (just a few hundred meters from our hotel) and explore.
The castle looked even better in the daylight. Those gardens!
After a nice stroll, we got some dinner and then walked in the gardens one more time before heading back to the hotel.
And just because I had to, at some point, post the mandatory selfie from during the trip, here it is.
Time for day three!
The Ruins of Fort Jonckholt
The third day of our visit, we were actually pretty exhausted. We hadn’t been able to sleep much thanks to the curtains in the hotel room letting through light, and it being bright and shiny in our room from around six o’clock in the morning onwards. It was also very, very hot, and we were a bit drowsy, so we decided to just visit one last location and then head back home.
That location was the Ruins of Fort Jonckholt. This is located pretty much in the middle of nowhere, which is why I liked it so much. Surrounded by trees, on a path you can’t access by car (we tried…. and ending up having to return), and then you enter this oasis of silence and tranquility in the middle of nowhere. Amazing.
I was a bit bummed there wasn’t more background information, though. And that we hadn’t brought a picnic, because this was an ideal location.
Here’s another view of the ruins in their entirity. You can easily imagine the castle that once stood here, but when you don’t follow the signs, you would never be able to imagine that just behind a few trees, this treasure is hidden.
I really enjoyed this trip, this little getaway, and if you’re ever in Belgium, I certainly recommend visiting this area with its hidden castles (two in one trip, who could’ve imagined!), its rich history and its calm atmosphere.
Weekend Trip to Bilzen: Day #1
Last week, my boyfriend and I went on a small weekend trip to Bilzen. For anyone who’s not from Belgium, you’ve probably never heard about Bilzen before. It’s a quaint, small village located near the border of Belgium and the Netherlands.
The reason why I wanted to post about this trip is because I feel like I don’t post enough personal stuff here. Sure, it’s my author blog first and foremost, but it’s also about me, and I want to share more about myself and my life with you. So, here we go.
Castle of Neercanne
On the first day, we actually drove a little further than Bilzen (where our hotel was located) and started by a visit to Kanne, an even-smaller town where you can actually cross the border between Belgium and the Netherlands. We were actually looking for caves in Kanne (which were closed, unfortunately) but imagine our surprise when we rounded a corner and saw this marvel.
This is why I like traveling so much. I’d done research prior to heading to Bilzen on what we could visit near our hotel, but I hadn’t come across this… You always manage to find some hidden secrets while traveling, and I love that.
The castle of Neercanne is quite unique. While we could only visit the gardens and the outside area, it’s still quite an experience. There’s also a renowned restaurant inside the castle (you best book a spot beforehand, though) and the view from the terrace is stellar.
I mean, this view. Too bad the road is in between, because I bet in the past, the pond across belonged to the castle gardens as well. The castle of Neercanne is actually, just to give you some trivia, the only terrace castle in the Netherlands. The Romans (yep, Julius Caesar and his companions) already had a fortress of some sort in this exact same spot, including caves which are now still being used as wine cellar.
After visiting the castle in Neercanne and uncovering that the caves we had actually come to visit were closed, we decided to stop for icecream. Because despite the rather gloomy-looking pictures, the weather was actually quite nice.
The icecream was quite nice too, by the way. We stopped at an ice parlor called Hild’Ice at Kanne, and this was the most delicious icecream I’ve had in years.
The Fortress of Eben-Emael
We decided to head to the fortress of Eben-Emael next, a military fortress which was bulit in the interbellum, around 1935. According to the opening hours on Google, this was supposed to be open.
It wasn’t.
We weren’t the only people lured there by the wrong opening hours, though. Quite a few families were stranded there, but thankfully we uncovered a path leading up the fortress where we still found a few remnants of the fortress that we could see, such as this building.
Despite being an impressive fortress by the looks of it, during World War II, the fortress was actually captured in less than 15 minutes by German troops. Oops.
After visiting the fortress (a rather short visit considering we could not do the 2,5 hour tour, which was the time we’d planned for this), we headed to our hotel, in Bilzen.
Hotel: Martin’s Rentmeesterij
The hotel we stayed at was called ‘Martin’s Rentmeesterij’, and it was actually a pretty nice hotel. I’d purchased a coupon online so we could stay there rather cheap, and I was not dissapointed. It wasn’t the best hotel I’d ever stayed at, not even the best Martin’s hotel I’d stayed at (Martin’s is a chain of hotels, and I’ve stayed in quite a few of them before) but it was certainly not bad.
The room was large and modern, with a queen size bed and wooden flooring (thank God no carpets!). The breakfast buffet was phenomenal. The major downside, though, was the bathrom. It was small, there was a window right to the side of the toilet/shower (and while you could close the screen, you could still look through the screen, so it was not very comfortable).
Despite that, I still recommend it, and if you want to be close to our final destination for the day and the main reason why we had gone to Bilzen in the first place, then it’s the best hotel in terms of location.
Unfortunatley, and another downside of the hotel, while they advertised they had a restaurant and a bistro where you could grab a quick bite, both were already fully occupied and we could not book a spot for the first nor the second night we stayed there. Which meant that we had to go back to the town of Bilzen itself (which is about 2-3 km away, but luckily we came by car) just to grab some dinner.
Castle of Alden Biesen
After dinner, we headed back to our hotel and chilled in our room until ten o’clock, when we had to go to the true spectacle for which we’d come to Bilzen to start with: Bilzen Mysteries.
Bilzen Mysteries is a nightly event that happens at the Alden Biesen Castle, during which you can tour the castle armed with a tablet and uncover the history, myths and stories related to Bilzen castle. It was actually quite fun.
It was not that dark yet when we arrived at the Alden Biesen castle for our tour. The castle is actually a commandery, and it was founded by the knights of the Teutonic Order. A crusade was launched from this very location. The building tragically burned down in 1971, but the government bougth it and restored it to its former glory.
Midway through the tour, it was already quite dark, and the lights lit up everywhere. I particularly liked how the small garden house in the back was lit up. The atmosphere was very nice, romantic, calm, tranquil, and it was pleasure to take this tour in the dark. We also saw quite a laser spectacle at the end of the tour.
If you’re interested in finding out more about the mystery (and maybe you’re heading to Belgium some time soon), the website where you can buy tickets for this event (and you have to buy tickets beforehand), is Bilzen Mysteries. I recommend it, especially if you’re heading to Bilzen or one of the neighbouring towns anyway.

Book Release: Anathema by Yoshiyuki Ly
About the Book
Title: Anathema
Author: Yoshiyuki Ly
Genre: Historical Fantasy Romance
Prepared to die for her country, Solaire Copeland is drafted to the Drakengard knighthood at twenty-two years old, and vows to stop running away from the one she loves. Guarding over her dark secrets in shame, she nevertheless takes a leap of faith and entrusts herself to her intelligent equal in Stella Azrith, an alluring, measured, and methodical young woman of magic. Solaire elevates her love for Stella in romantic showmanship and subservience, even as the two of them struggle to understand one another through their temperamental differences. Anathema is a historical fantasy romance that tells the tale of Solaire and Stella’s courtly relationship in their youth, as they grow into their characters—Archangel Vespair and Mistress Fury—from The Scorpion’s Empress, Venus and Lysander, and Black Waltz as a prequel to the existing trilogy.
Desperate to keep Solaire at home, Stella conspires to prevent her from getting sent off to fight in an unjust war for their country, the Monomyth of Astora. In her scheming at the highest levels of government, she forms an unstable alliance with Fey Murasaki, the wicked and wily ambassador from Astora’s closest foreign ally. Stella and Fey’s influence across the land slithers in the darkness while Solaire’s knightly powers shine to alarming levels in the light, causing them to become targets—for both good and ill—of the nation’s most powerful leaders. Through intensifying mortal perils, Solaire’s love for Stella deepens to maddening levels, restrained only by her distinct sense that her free will erodes more each time she kneels in fulfilling servitude.
Independent streaks contradict religiosity in service of loving a woman with a will so strong—Solaire bears both the light and the dark of enlightened empathy and burning hatred, with her secrets fueling her rise as the strongest knight of an age.

Author Interview with Holly Ash
1) What inspired you to start a writing career?
I’ve always enjoyed writing and have been doing it for as long as I can remember, though it was always just a hobby. I decided to get serious about my writing about three years ago. My son had just turned 2 years old and I realized that I hadn’t written anything since before he was born and it really bothered me. I decided that night that something had to change. I wanted to set a good example and show my kids that through hard work and determination you can achieve your dreams. I set up a writing routine and haven’t stopped since then, though I did slow down a little when I was pregnant with my daughter last year. I try to involve my kids when I can. There’s been several times when I’m writing at my computer and my son is standing on the chair behind me drawing on my white board while I write, though I tend to do most of my writing once the kids are in bed.
2) Is your book a stand-alone, or is it part of a series?
Crystal and Flint is the first book in a five book series. Each book will cover one of the team’s missions. The second book in the series, Family Binds, will be released this summer.
3) How does your book stand out from others?
Most military based science fiction takes place in outer space where humans are fighting some kind of alien race. Crystal and Flint is different in that it takes place on a single planet and most of the action occurs underwater in submarines and underwater colonies. It also differs in the fact the most of the characters are from the planet Neophia which has been colonized by humans prior to the start of this series. So from the perspective of Crystal and the other Neophian natives the humans are the alien race.
4) Are any of your characters based on real-life people?
Sort of. Crystal and Desi were first created for fan fiction I wrote with a friend in middle school for the 90s TV show SeaQuest. For me anyway, Crystal was a version of myself that I wanted to be. She had changed as a character a lot since then but there are certainly still aspects of myself in her. For Desi, I think she is inspired by my friend since they are both tough, smart, confident women.
5) Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?
Find what works for you and stick with it. Your process doesn’t have to look like anyone else. That goes for how you write or story or how you publish it. I know there are some authors that can put out three or four books a year. I can’t do that and that’s ok. There are authors who write great first drafts that need very little editing. That’s great, but again it doesn’t work for me. My first drafts are really rough and it takes me several rounds of editing and rewriting to get my stories where I want them to be. That’s what works for me, but that doesn’t mean it will work for you. I would tell aspiring authors not to compare themselves to other authors, especially those who have been publishing for a while and have a good handle on what works for them. Whatever your process is, is the right way for you. The only thing that matters is telling your story, not how you get it on the page.

Author Interview with Greta Boris

1) How do you plot novels? Do you outline?
I use a method I created called the Plot Menu. I first figure out who my characters are using the Enneagram personality types, then I create a spreadsheet in a three act structure, plug in major plot points, and start writing! I go back to it every 5 or 6 chapters and make adjustments as I get new ideas and learn my characters better.
2) Do you write in one genre, or in different genres?
The only genre, besides nonfiction, I’m published in at the moment is psychological suspense, but I’m working on a cozy mystery and a women’s fiction novel I hope will make it out into the world soon.
3) What is your favorite part of the writing process?
I actually like revising books. I love the collaboration aspect of working with a good editor . It’s hard to see your own writing objectively, which is nerve wracking for me. Getting my editor’s feedback then massaging the book to make it better and shinier is both a relief and a lot of fun.
4) What is your dream as an author?
My personal mission statement is to write stories that touch hearts and change minds. I love it when I hear from a reader that something I wrote did that. I guess my dream would be to reach more readers, so the N.Y. Times list and USA Today list would be lovely. I’ve been on Amazon bestselling lists with my nonfiction and that was exciting too.
5) What would you like your readers to take away from your story?
The Sanctity of Sloth is a story about what can happen when a good woman does nothing. It’s an extreme example, most of us don’t run into dead bodies on a regular basis, but it is based on something that happened in Orange County several years ago. There are people in terrible circumstances all around us, and our tendency can be to look the other way, not want to get involved. I wanted to make the point that not getting involved has consequences too.
6) What are your strong points when it comes to writing? What are your weak points?
I think and hope, I’m getting better with each book. In the beginning I really struggled with plot. My stories tended to ramble down rabbit trails – which is how my mind works. It made a lot of work for my editor! She had to reign me in. Now my plots are much more on point, more structured, but I’m struggling a bit with making sure my character’s motivations make sense.
Over all I’d say my strong points are characters you can relate to and plot twists and turns you didn’t expect. Regarding weakness, I have to rewrite and rewrite to make character’s motivations straight and clear and keep the tension up.
7) Are you working on something at the moment?
I’m currently wrapping up The Color of Envy, book four in the series. Each book is a standalone story, so you can start with anywhere, and each book has a different protagonist. However, I do bring characters I like or need into several of the books, so you’ll see familiar faces if you read the series. Envy is set in Laguna Beach, like the first book, A Margin of Lust. It’s fun to be back in the world of creepy mini-mansions on cliffs overlooking the ocean.
