New Release: Hidden Magic Anthology
On March 10, 2020, Hidden Magic released. This is an anthology featuring stories about – you guessed it – hidden magic. I decided to participate with a story of my own, set in a fantasy realm I hope to explore more in future stories. This story in particular is set in the Seven Kingdoms, in a dark time when mages are branded and their magic is destroyed.
Here is the blurb for my story The Mark of the Red God:
All mages of the Seven Kingdoms have been branded with a rune that makes it impossible for them to access their magic. Despite the mark, Saleyna Loxley, a sixteen-year-old girl from a small town, still has access to some of her powers. As an Empath, she can connect with other people and sense their emotions. Sometimes, she can even influence other people’s emotions. However, as the Red Priests are keen to destroy any magic-wielder, Saleyna must hide her magic at all costs.
The story will be continued in the sequel anthologies, Wayward Magic (April 14, 2020) and Forgotten Magic (May 12, 2020).
Synopsis for Hidden Magic:
No matter the world, life can be dangerous. Be they wizards and shamans, assassins, or everyday people, Hidden Magic tells their stories about escape, consequences, and most of all, magic.
From Earth cities and fantastical new worlds comes a collection of stories where heroes grapple with the seen and unseen in order to save themselves, their families, and often the world. This collection features:
Elderly antiques experts interacting with souls
Shamans growing outlawed magic
Baby chimeras battling for their lives
Children sprouting fluffy tails
A king’s boat thrown off-course
A perfect life coming at a not-so-perfect cost
Vikings defending a village against the unseen
A lone shifter atoning for his past mistakes
Trolls and pixies tumbling through the doorway to another world
And more!

Monthly Goals March
Time flies. Literally, sometimes. I have no idea what happens to January or February, but the months were quite productive. I finished a lot a few short stories, submitted three novellas (wow!), submitted the first part of my dragon book, edited The Wolf of the Baskervilles, and probably did a lot more that I’m forgetting now.
I also remembered that I forgot to write a monthly goals post last month. Oops.
So, I’m making it up to you now by sharing my goals for March (and here’s hoping I reach all or most of them… But I already completed some!)

Phew, a lot of goals again! What are your goals for this month?
January 5, 2020
New Year’s Resolutions 2020
I know I’m a bit late with these (it’s already January 5, I can barely believe it!) but I still wanted to share my goals for the new year with you. I’m excited for 2020. It will (hopefully) be the year when we move to a bigger house, and I’m very excited about that.
In terms of writing, 2019 was quite a productive year for me. A Study in Shifters released, the second book in The Adventures of Marisol Holmes series. I’ve finished writing the third book in the series, and am currently editing it. Murder in Mind, my YA dystopian novel, released in July 2019. I also wrote a bunch of novellas for box sets, including the prequel to the Academy for the Wicked series, A Monstrous Beauty (a retelling of Sleeping Beauty), Princess of Dreams (a retelling of Sleeping Beauty), two retellings of Alice in Wonderland: Queen’s Fall (from the POV of the villain, the Queen of Hearts) and The Heir of Wonderland (from the POV of the heroine, Alice). I also released Wicked Blood, the first book in the Blood Witch series, and the first part of Symphony of the Departed, the first book in the Allegro Academy series. I probably forgot about a few stories as well, but as you can see, 2019 was quite productive!
For 2020, I already started out strong – two submissions, one short story and one novella, in under five days! I’m also working on the edits for The Wolf of the Baskervilles, the third book in The Adventures of Marisol Holmes series. Here are my goals for 2020:
Draft one book per month. I know it’s ambitious, but with my current writing schedule, I should be able to manage this.
Write 2k a day Monday-Saturday. This is related to the previous goal. However, I already know there will be some days when I won’t be able to write, so I have to find a way to cope with that, by either then catching up over the weekend or getting a head-start, or a mix of both.
Write one short story a week. I already started out strong with one short story this week, and have my eyes on an anthology submission call I want to work on next week.
Rewrite / Revise Symphony of the Departed (Allegro Academy #1). I rewrote the first part for a box set I’m participating in, so now I want to rewrite part two, get it edited, and then set it for release in the course of this year.
Rewrite / Revise Allegro Academy #2. Same as above, except I have to completely rewrite this one.
Finish the second book in the Ghost Slayer series and send it to my publisher. I might use it in a box set I’m participating in, or write a novella for that box set; I’ll have to check.
Finish edits for The Wolf of the Baskervilles , the third book in The Adventures of Marisol Holmes series.
Re-release The Soul Thief and Demonic Pact , the first two books in The Angel of Death series.
Finish writing my serial The Chronicles of Blood and get it published.
Blog at least 2 times a week.
Rewrite / Revise The Sleeping Kingdom. Another one that’s been on my to do list for years.
Write Snoebels, Cat Detective books 1-3 get them published.
Write the sequel to Murder in Mind and submit it to my publisher.
For my Seven Kingdoms series, finish several books: WIP name “Red Priest” and WIP name “Dragon”.
Publish The Gatekeeper and finish at least one more books in this series.
Keep this website updated with new and upcoming books.
Write 2 more books in the Sally Sleuth Series and get them published.
Write the first book in the YA warlock series I’m planning.
Rewrite and edit Wicked Blood , and publish it in the course of this year.
Write the second book in the Blood Witch series (sequel to Wicked Blood) and get it published.
I probably forgot a few goals, but those are the major goals for this year. Wish me luck! Feel free to share your goals (or a link to your post with goals) in the comments section, so I can check them out!

Author Interview Jay Got Married
What inspired you to start writing career?
I enjoyed writing, even in grade school and high school. I majored in English in college with the intention of writing fiction as a career at some point or a least finding a job in the writing field. But I got married at age 24 and had three children causing me to put any writing aspirations on hold.
Once my children got older, I began writing in earnest at age 45. I published my first book—a non-fiction book on the perils of midlife—in 2012. I titled it: Fighting the Effects of Gravity: One Man’s Journey Into Middle Life and based it on the premise of a pair of jeans of mine that suddenly didn’t fit my falling behind.
Is this book a stand-alone, or is it part of a series?
The book is a stand-alone.
How does your book stand out from others?
My book is a non-fiction book of essays, each of which centers around my views on life written in humorous, tongue-in-cheek style. The book also includes anecdotes from my life experiences and pictures chosen to comically drive home my points. My book is very different in content and style. No other book, from my experience, can match my wit and content.
In an essay entitled, Big Brother Isn’t Among Us, for instance, I satirize George Orwell’s 1984 and conclude that Big Brother is, in fact, not watching us as Orwell insisted, but that we, in fact—with our cell phones and surveillance cameras—are ore own big brothers. Humorous pictures illustrate the facts throughout.
Are any of the situations/characters in your book inspired by real events?
I would say real events and personal anecdotes are used to reinforce and amplify whatever assertions I make. For instance, I relate a story about an old friend who left a DVD player on a cart in Sam’s parking lot. Surveillance cameras showed that a good Sam’s customer found the player on the cart and took it rather than return it to the store. I consider this stealing. Sam’s Club saw it another way, however. They gave my friend another DVD player and said nothing to the perpetrator. In this case, Big Brother—in the guise of Sam’s Club—was watching, he just chose to look the other away.
Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?
Unless you’re either very intelligent or hit the wants and desires of the reading public on the head the first time out, get ready for a long ride. Writing has to be the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’m on my 7th book and I think I’m just now getting the hang of using the proper punctuation and using it to my benefit.
Don’t write to make money. Because I only know a few people that do. Write because you enjoy it. For me, writing is a passion; it’s the thing I do well. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy. It’s hard work. And most times, it’s a real pain in the butt.
As I have been told many times: writing isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon. Stay in the race and don’t get discouraged. Just keep writing. Even if you don’t sell anything, just keep writing. Find people who enjoy writing like you do and get into writing groups.
Find a good professional editor and listen to him or her. I used to think I knew best. But now, when I find a good editor, I usually accept what they have to say. I figure: Oh, well, they know more than I do. This type of attitude comes with maturity.
Good luck. I hope that I have been helpful.
About the Book
Title: Jay Got Married
Author: James Robinson Jr.
Genre: Non-Fiction Humor
Jay Got Married consists of 9 humorous and, at times, poignant essays chronicling the ironies of everyday life in word and picture. Take for example the lead essay, aptly titled, “Jay got Married,” where I find myself mired in a horrendous dream.
In the fantasy, my aging father–dressed in his favorite Champion t-shirt with stains covering the front–marries my wife and I like he did 42 years ago but, this time around, the my 92-year-old ex-clergy dad forgets his lines causing me to coach him through the event with hints like: “ask for the rings, ask for the rings.” All the while, my best man sings Sonny and Cher’s, “I Got You Babe.”
Finally married, my wife and I end the ceremony with a kiss. But as I turn to exit, my eyes catch a glimpse of the bridesmaid who is no longer my wife’s best friend but now Gal Gadot from Dell Comics and Wonder Woman Fame. She is dressed in full Wonder Women regalia and looks totally shocked by the whole affair.
My mother turns to my father (now in the audience) with a quizzical look and says, “Dad, look at that bridesmaid. Isn’t that Superman?” She doesn’t get out much.
As we exit the church, and the bubbles fill the air–no one uses rice anymore—my wife ignores the limo and takes off on a sleek motorcycle, leaving me in the lurch—hence the cover.
Sure, it’s sounds crazy. But, in truth, isn’t the world of marriage crazy these days? In my case, what would one do when faced with the prospect of losing their beloved wife after 42 years? At age 67, would they remarry? Would they even want to remarry? These and other marital tidbits are discussed with humor and as much reverence as I could muster.
P.S. The author pairs up with Wonder Woman again in a final bit of photo wizardry Why? How? How are tricky copyright infringement laws avoided? Read Jay Got Married and find out.

Author Interview Refraction
1) What inspired you to start a writing career?
I don’t believe I ever chose to be a writer; it was just something that evolved naturally. From an early age, I was writing. By the time I was 9, I was creating complex fiction and killing off the main protagonist – much to the horror of my teachers and parents. At 11, I wrote my first play which was performed in front of the school and the following year, I sent a novel to a publisher. It didn’t get published, but they did send a lovely rejection letter, which spurred me on.
Because I always knew I would end up being a writer, I did a lot of other things before getting here. There was so much I wanted to experience, so many things I wanted to do with my life. Writing, I knew I could do that, but what else could I do? I worked in TV as a producer, director and presenter, I was in a pop group and I travelled the world as an actor. In the background, was always writing. Journalist, blogger, reviewer; and then in 2017, I wrote a musical for the London stage. As big a challenge as that was, it was nothing compared to finishing Refraction. Unlike a script, everything has to be perfect in a book, as thousands of eyes will be reading/scrutinising my work. Is that comma in the right place? Is that made-up word the same throughout the book? Would that character say that? It took three months of edits until it was finally ready to be published.
2) Is your book a stand-alone, or is it part of a series?
It’s the first (and the middle) story of three books. At the very beginning of Refraction, before the introduction, is a page which simply reads The Present. The next one will be The Future and the final one, The Past. Although this is a trilogy, there are no major cliff-hangers at the end of each book. I wanted them to work as stand-alone novels, with an over-arching story thread linking them all together.
3) How does your book stand out from other books in the same genre?
This isn’t what you would call traditional sci-fi, it’s real-world science fiction. Refraction is based in modern-day London with a fictitious story revolving around dreams. It’s actually very grounded with relatable characters in the first half of the book and then the fantastic takes over, a little like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I did a lot of research to make it as believable as possible and then explain it all in my writing, making it understandable for the reader. We all have dreams and I imagine all of us have wished we could bring some of them into the real world; this book explores that thought – to the extreme!
4) Are any of your characters based on real people?
Yes and no. The four main characters all have traits from me, but none of them are specifically based on real people. Of course, when we get to the dream apparitions, they are based on their respective real-life counterparts; whoever or whatever they may be.
5) Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?
If you’re new to writing, hone your craft. Write anything and everything you can. Start a blog, jot down story ideas, write poetry; whatever sparks your interest. When starting your first novel, it’s important to keep yourself motivated. This is tough work – it’s not an easy profession at all. It can also feel quite lonely at times and the sheer amount of work you need to do to get to the end can be daunting, especially when you’re starting out. Don’t let it stop you achieving your goals. Take your time and just keep writing. (I’m so thinking of Dory from Finding Nemo right now!)
About the Book
Title: Refraction
Author: Terry Geo
Genre: Science-Fiction / Fantasy
Most stories start at the beginning; this one begins at the end. At least for Maria. Her sudden death sends shockwaves through her family and pushes her grieving mother to the very brink of insanity. After exhausting every avenue conventional medicine has to offer, Maria’s father, Henry, brings together the world’s greatest minds in the hope of carving out a new path. Months pass, and as Henry watches his beloved Elena slowly drift away, he begins to lose faith. It is only then that a solution presents itself. A discovery so momentous, it saves Elena and reveals the most important scientific and technological breakthrough in modern history.
Silicate is founded; a privately funded facility which delves deeper into the human mind, able to discover answers to questions we are yet to ask. Securing Silicate’s secrets becomes of utmost importance; even after treating hundreds of patients, the public are still unaware of the wonders and terrifying reality Silicate has unearthed . . .
The world you know is only half the story.
Author Bio
Born in Derbyshire, raised in Yorkshire, resides in London, Terry learned from a young age that he was different from his peers. He preferred the company of girls over boys, didn’t like sports and would write at every opportunity. He was bullied throughout his school life both physically and verbally and had to deal with the cruelty of others from an early age.
Terry Geo wrote and directed his first play at age eleven. At sixteen, he started work in television, writing scripts and becoming the youngest director in the country. Terry applied for a job while taking his final exams and started work in television the week after he finished school. For the first time in his life, he found a world where he could shine and be accepted for who he was. He came out as gay to his parents the following week and never again hid his sexuality from anyone. At seventeen he became the youngest director in the country, producing a light entertainment show for Yorkshire Television. After a short stint in a boyband, Terry went back to writing, editing two national publications. He toured the world as an actor, moved to London and in 2017, wrote and directed a musical for the London stage. A year later, Terry married Ken, the love of his life, in London. After their honeymoon in Thailand, he returned to a book he had started some years before. In January 2019, his cat Megara sadly passed away. This hit Terry hard and in memorial to her, he wrote her into the book he was writing. She is now a part of Terry’s debut published novel, Refraction.

Author Interview Edge of Death:
1.“Edge of Death” is the second book in a series. Was writing the second book harder for you than the first book? In what ways was it different from writing the first book in a series?
The second book in any trilogy can be tricky. I’ve read several where it’s nothing more than a bridge between the first and third and nothing much happens. On the other hand, the second book can become the most interesting book. In my case, this book was harder for me to write because it lacked direction of the first book, ‘Curse of the Sea.’ I had a series of events taking place without any reason why. In other words, I lacked a villain with a motive. Once I realized the problem, the book came together quickly.
2. Which character is your favorite to write about in this book?
I have several favorites from previous books that carry over into this one, but I really enjoyed developing Hades, god of the Underworld, the villain in this book. He’s out to get Alex because she’s the granddaughter of a Titan. According to him, the only good Titan is a dead one. In addition, he wants to become relevant to the mortals on Earth once more, but Alex stands in his way. Unintentionally, at first. This conflict won’t end here, however and there will be further episodes in the future.
3. Can you detail the writing process? Are you a plotter or a pantser? Is there a specific place where you like to write?
I’m definitely a pantser. I’ll come up with an idea for a story and sit down at my computer and write. But this also means that I edit a lot more than someone who’s more organized and actually outlines or plots out their books. Once I finish a first draft, I let it sit for a while, but I’ll often have revelations about it while I’m watching TV or doing something else. I write those down and make changes when I can. In addition, I try to write an entire series at one time. In one sense, this is good, but in another, it means that I have to be aware that any changes in book one could result in changes in the rest of the series.
4. What’s next for you? Do you have any plans for future books?
I’m preparing the next book in my series with the working title of ‘Call From Home.” Currently, it’s with my editor for her review and then I’ll be sending it out to some beta
readers. I also have a draft of my next series called the Golden Harvest, but that won’t be ready for a couple of years. And, I have some short stories with my writing group for a new anthology that will come out soon.
5. Last but not least, do you have any advice for aspiring authors?
The only reason why an author is still aspiring is because they haven’t written anything. My advice is the write. Then read—everything. Not just in your favorite genre, but all genres. It’ll help your writing.
About the Book
Title: Edge of Death: Book Two of the Admiralty Archives
Author: Joni Parker
Genre: Urban Fantasy
In this second installment of The Admiralty Archives, the warrior Lady Alexin, the Keeper of the Keys for the Elf realm of Eledon, finds herself exiled to the harsh world of near-future London. Rendered little more than a political pawn by the Elfin Council of Elders to avoid a war with the Rock Elves, she has little choice but to struggle to find her way in this strange new land. Taken under the protection of kindly mentors, Vice Admiral Malcolm Teller of the British Royal Navy and his wife, Alex brings all her skills to the fore as she uncovers a series of deadly plots.
Murder is on everyone’s mind as an underground White Supremacist organization takes aim at Admiral Teller while two wizards, resurrected from death, must kill Alex in order to survive. To make matters worse, the Rock Elves dispatch a hundred assassins from Eledon with their sole mission to bring Lady Alexin to the very… Edge of Death.
