Welcome Guest Author Cara Bristol! #DestinysChance #PNR

Welcome, Cara! Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.
I write in several genres: contemporary erotic romance, domestic discipline and paranormal. I’m probably best known for the Rod and Cane Society domestic discipline series about a secret organization of men who spank and the women who love them. I like the freedom writing paranormal gives me. When I’m not writing, I enjoy traveling, reading, and watching TV. I have one husband, two grown step kids, and two cats.
Great! Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.
It’s a reincarnation story. Destiny Grable loves her best friend’s ex-boyfriend Chance Everett, but she has never acted on her feelings. Then she and Zoe are in a car accident, her friend is killed and she’s reincarnated in Zoe’s body. Though Destiny feels guilty about it, she starts to think she might have a chance with Chance – except he secretly had feelings for Destiny who now appears to be Zoe.
Wow! As the author, what surprised you about this story?
The original reincarnation premise remained the same, as did the presence of three characters, but the story evolved and changed considerably from my first draft. It proved challenging to write because the characters are faithful and true to each other – yet they harbor secret feelings. By the end, I learned something important about Zoe that had a huge impact on the story. Developing characters is part creation, part discovery.
Sounds so interesting! Will there be any sequels or other books in the same series? Not at this time, although I think Destiny’s sister Laura and Chance’s brother Roman have a thing going on. Laura is psychic, and Roman is the one person she can’t read.
Ooh, that’s promising! What was the hardest thing for you about writing this story?
Everything. This was the most difficult, complex story I’ve ever written, and in fact I scrapped the first draft entirely, and wrote it from scratch a second time, then re-wrote about half of the second version. The relationships and emotions proved the most problematic. If Chance is with Zoe and she’s killed, how do I get him to transfer his feelings to Destiny without the implication of emotional infidelity?
I dealt with something that I don’t think is mentioned very often in erotic romance – people developing feelings for the partners of friends and acquaintances. But I wanted my characters to act honorably. Feelings are one thing; behavior is another. What turned out to be key was Zoe herself. Though Zoe appears in backstory only, her character underwent several transformations to make it all work.
Compounding the challenge of the complexity of the story itself, I had two other contracted works with the same deadlines due to two publishers, so I was under an extreme time crunch.

I am writing the fifth Rod and Cane romance, and I’m writing an erotic science fiction story. After writing Destiny’s Chance and the two other works, I swore I’d never work on multiple stories at the same time. Yet here I am doing it again. But this time, there are no hard deadlines involved.
I’m also engaged in getting the word out about the other twoworks that released in May. My tenth title (woo hoo!) Disciplinary Measures is a short story (15K words) and the fourth in the Rod and Cane Society series. Coming to Terms is a domestic discipline anthology. I’m one of seven authors in that one. My story is humorous one called Wife on the Lam.

It was published by Black Velvet Seductions. Intimate Submission is an erotic romance with spanking that is available as an individual ebook, and in the anthology Spanked! The exclamation mark is part of the title; I’m not being overly exuberant.
LOL! What do you find easiest and hardest to write?
Dialog is the easiest, sex scenes are the most difficult. Although my books contain graphic sex, the sex isn’t gratuitous. It means something to the story. For instance, in Destiny’s Chance, it’s while making love with “Zoe,” that Chance begins to realize she might not be who he thinks she is.
Have you incorporated actual events or people from your own life into your books?
I write fiction, not autobiography disguised as fiction. However, I am influenced by all the experiences I’ve had in my life and they provide a backdrop. For instance, Wife on the Lam takes place on a tropical island. I’ve been to a lot of tropical islands on vacation, and I used my experiences as background information. There are a couple of scenes set in a park in Destiny’s Chance. It was inspired by the park I used to go to as a young child.
Is there a theme or message that runs through your work?
Surprisingly, forgiveness, defined as letting go of past hurts. Being able to let go and live one’s life is healing. Forgiving oneself for mistakes is especially important. We’re all doing the best we can, and we all make mistakes. In Destiny’s Chance, Destiny feels guilty because she wants Chance, and she has to forgive herself.
That’s great! What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?
If they know me first and then read my novels, they would be surprised by how erotic they are. If they read the books first, and then meet me, they’d be surprised by how pragmatic and quiet I am. Some people lead with their personality, I don’t. It takes a little while to get to know me. I’m not as reserved as I used to be, but I’m still shy.
Which romance book or series (or other genre, if you don’t write romance) do you wish you had written?
I love Regency historicals, but I don’t have the history knowledge to write one. Just the finer details like the clothing, the food, the language (word choices) are challenging. I would want to be accurate.
Okay, now, just for fun:
Milk chocolate or dark chocolate? Dark chocolate.
Salty or sweet? Salty.
Bed or kitchen table? Bed.
Beach or mountains? Beach.
Give or receive? Give.

Destiny Grable can’t help that she's fallen in love with Chance Everett, her best friend's boyfriend, but she's never, ever acted on her feelings -- until she and Zoe are in a car accident, her friend is killed, and she is reincarnated in her body. She never wished for something like this to happen, but perhaps now she’ll be free to love Chance the way she always wanted to.
Chance might have had pursued Destiny, but he has a kinky side and she was a nice girl. But now she’s dead, and the accident has forced him to take in his ex-girlfriend. As soon as she recovers and moves out, he’ll get on with his life.
Here’s the scene where Destiny’s discovers the truth about what really happened. She’s in the hospital following the car accident that killed her friend Zoe. An excerpt from Destiny’s Chance:
Destiny expelled her breath in a heavy sigh and reached for the phone to try her parents one more time.
What the hell? She’d been too wrought by news of Zoe’s death to pay attention to much else, but now she noticed her arm looked…weird. Her wrist seemed thinner, her skin paler, the hair so fine it appeared almost nonexistent. And when had she gotten acrylic nails?
Her pulse rate doubled. The arm, the hand, the silver infinity ring on the index finger weren’t hers, but she recognized them. She fixated on the ID bracelet encircling the skinny wrist.
RICHARDS, ZOE. And her friend’s date of birth.
They got the bodies mixed up. Gave you the wrong wristband.
But they couldn’t have switched arms. She flipped her hands over.
Destiny ripped back the covers and swore in frustration when the bed rail fought her frantic efforts to lower it. She forced it down, but her hospital gown caught in the metal. She tore it loose and scrambled for the bathroom.
Bruised and battered, Zoe stared at her from the mirror over the sink.
A nightmare. Wake up! Wake up! “No! No!” Slapping her face, Destiny searched for her plump cheeks, her ski-jump schnoz, and the mocha-brown eyes she considered one of her best features. The image mimicked her movements but presented high cheekbones loved by the camera, a perfect nose, and large blue eyes gone feral.
She yanked up her hospital gown. Where were her hips? Her boobs! She stared at her flat chest. She dropped the gown and screamed.
A nurse charged into the bathroom. “What’s wrong? Are you hurt?”
“My face!” she yelled. “What happened to my face?”
“The bruises will heal, and your hair will grow back and cover the scar.”
“No, no! It’s not myface!”
“What do you mean?”
“The person I see isn’t me,” she cried.

Welcome Guest Author Joya Fields! #PNR #ghosts #research

See below for her giveaway!Very happy to have my good friend Joya Fields back on the blog today to celebrate her new release, Altered Frequency (Hauntings at Inner Harbor #2). She wanted to share some fun research she got to do for the book. So, read on...

Altered Frequency features a heroine who is a deejay and a hero who’s a cop. And a matchmaking ghost! Well, I know a lot about police because I also write suspense. And I know a little about ghosts because I’ve written another ghost story. But writing a deejay was new to me. There’s a local radio station here in Baltimore, WLIF, with a deejay that plays dedications on a night-time show. She has a diverse following—people of all ages love her show. I contacted the deejay, Fran Lane, about a potential fact-finding interview and she kindly invited me to the station.

#HeartsinDarkness Has a New Cover! #Indie #ReleaseDay
Click here for the Wet & Wild Hop Post!I recently received the rights back from my publisher on Hearts in Darkness, my first published book. Now, I'm thrilled to share with you the new cover for Hearts in Darkness!

Buy at Amazon | B&N | Smashwords | AReKobo and iBookstore are forthcoming!
Two strangers…
Makenna James thinks her day can't get any worse, until she finds herself stranded in a pitch-black elevator with a complete stranger. Distracted by a phone call, the pin-striped accountant catches only a glimpse of a dragon tattoo on his hand before the lights go out.
Four hours…
Caden Grayson is amused when a harried redhead dashes into his elevator fumbling her bags and cell phone. His amusement turns to panic when the power fails. Despite his piercings, tats, and vicious scar, he's terrified of the dark and confined spaces. Now, he's trapped in his own worst nightmare.
One pitch-black elevator…
To fight fear, they must reach out and open up. With no preconceived notions based on looks to hold them back, they discover just how much they have in common. In the warming darkness, attraction grows and sparks fly, but will they feel the same when the lights come back on?

This book is 95% identical to the original publication. The only difference is a bit of editing and the addition of an interview with Caden to the back matter (you can find a similar interview here so don't buy just for that).
I know a lot of you were nervous about the cover changing, so now I'm wondering: what do you think???
Oh, also, bookmarks and romance trading cards to come! :)
Thanks for visiting!

#SouthofSurrender is Wet and Wild! #WildHop #EarlyReviews

I'm celebrating the release of my 10th novel, South of Surrender, the wildest book in my Hearts of the Anemoi series. Here's what the early reviews are saying:
Stephanie, Fangs, Wands, and Fairy Dust, Pick of the Week!: "Heartwarming and heart-wrenching; in South of Surrender, as always, Laura Kaye writes with her heart....While reading North of Need and West of Want would have you chomping at the bit for South of Surrender, it is a book that stands well on its own. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND SOUTH OF SURRENDER as a MUST READ for any lover of Paranormal Romance."

Jillian, Read-Love-Blog, 5/5 Loves!: "This, so far, is officially my favorite book in the series. Loved, loved, LOVED!...This story was told with such feeling and description that I honestly felt what Chrys and Laney were going through....this story has everything I love in a book - I laughed, I had white-knuckled-ereader-gripping moments and I also cried...a lot. To me, that's what a great story does for a reader...takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions. South of Surrender was that, and more."

DaVinciKittie, GraveTells, 4.5/5 Stars and a MUST-READ!: "Sweeping and unexpectedly poignant, South of Surrender is a pivotal chapter in the Hearts of the Anemoi saga. Chrysander is everything I hoped he would be and more, deeper in mind and spirit, and his lady is the perfect compliment. This is a "must read" for any fan of paranormal romance....a story that will break your heart and leave you wanting more, more, more!"

Lissa Trevor on Getting in the Mood to Write

Lissa Trevor
to the blog!
I'm happy to welcome Lissa Trevor to the blog today to talk about the great topic of how to get in the mood to write. Lots of people ask me, "What happens when you have writer's block?" To which I answer, "I force myself to write." Contracted deadlines rarely give a writer the luxury of deciding not to write, so Lissa's post offers some useful advice on how to make sure you do it every day. Take it away, Lissa...
Getting in The Mood: How to Write Every Day
If you’ve got stories in your head just dying to be let out, the hard part of writing is finding time to write. But at the end of the day, sometimes all I want to do is kick back with a glass of wine and watch Game of Thrones on HBO, read a book, or knit something soft and fuzzy. And during the weekend, I’ve got my house to clean, chores to do, and time to spend with my family. That’s not a lot of time left to write. The best way I’ve found to clear out time to write is to schedule it in just like a doctor’s appointment and stick to it. Finding that sweet spot, however, is the tough part.
Some writers set the clock an hour or so early to get their writing time in. That’s just not me. I’m not a morning person and I don’t wake up fresh as a daisy. But it might work for you. John Grisham used to write on a legal pad during the down time of his day job, on lunch and during train or bus rides. I tend to take a long time to get going and then when I’m on a roll, I don’t want to hit the brakes just for a silly thing like my boss wanting a report on his desk by three p.m. However, if you’ve got some holes in your day, make sure you always have a notebook or an app on your tablet or phone to help jot down ideas and plot points.
Then, there’s what I do. When I’m not on deadline, I write from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. every night. This time slot works for me because dinner is done, my son is in bed and I don’t have anything else weighing on me. If I didn’t get a chance to do it before eight, I can do it after ten – or put it off until tomorrow.
When I am on deadline those times get stretched: eight to midnight and if that’s not cutting it, six to midnight (My family has to fend for themselves for supper that week and I do a lot of freezer meals and crock pot dishes.) and all day Sunday.
I’m also crazy. Not everyone is going to have two hours a day. But everyone does have some wiggle room in their schedule. The key is finding it. In some cases, you might have to give something up that you really enjoy – at least until the book is done. For example, if I didn’t have my nights free – like if I had to work two jobs? I would give up a portion of my sleep time and set that alarm clock earlier. I’d do it in stages, though, so my body didn’t rebel. A half hour for a few weeks and then build up to my two hour block. The thought of having to do that is so unpleasant to me, though! But you know what would be more unpleasant? Not being able to write. So if the getting up early didn’t work, I’d try something different. Maybe I’d write during my day job’s lunch hour and my night job’s break and finish up with an hour before bed? If I was a stay at home Mom and had to care for my children and domestic engineer there are no lunch breaks. So maybe I’d look into play dates where, I’d trade off with another Mom. When the kids are at the play date, that’s my block of writing time for the week. Or I’d take a five hour energy drink and put in an hour after everyone was in bed. Or I’d talk into a microphone while we were going for walks and transcribe it later. And I have to admit, I’ve also used the television for a ½ hour writing sprint. I don’t know what it is about that purple dinosaur, but if it wasn’t for Barney, I wouldn’t have been able to take a shower for the first three years of my son’s life.
When I get my butt into the chair, utilizing the time so I’m not
In my new release, SPANK ME, MR. DARCY, I was in luck because I already knew the beginning, middle and end and have known the characters since high school. All I had to do was write in the explicit parts that went on behind the scenes of Ms. Austen’s wonderful novel and in my dirty little mind.
Finding time to write is a lot like finding time for yourself, in that a lot of writers put it low on their things to do list. Some days are like that. There are days when I’m going to bed with my son at eight p.m. There are days when I’m writing past midnight when my fingers are still going strong, but my eyelids are closing. Making an ironclad appointment will eventually make daily writing a habit and you’ll find yourself scheduling things around your writing time.

Netherfield, infamous for its debauched parties of excess and luxury, has a new Master.
After finagling an invitation to the ball, Elizabeth Bennet is introduced to the powerful and prideful Mr. Darcy, while her sister Jane has captivated the new owner, Mr. Bingley. Having contented herself with the pleasurable caresses of her best friend, Charlotte Lucas, Elizabeth is intrigued with the sensuality she finds at Netherfield. But it isn’t until her sister Jane is taken ill and Elizabeth stays at Netherfield to nurse her back to health that she finds the dungeons of Netherfield and the man in the black mask who becomes her Master.
By the time she leaves Netherfield, Elizabeth will have become disenchanted with her childhood playmate and obsessed with Mr. Darcy, her Master, who has told her that she would be more marriageable as a Netherfield submissive than as a curious virgin. Elizabeth holds on to her affront at his callous regard for her until Charlotte marries Mr. Collins and Jane is discarded by Mr. Bingley. Unwilling to save herself for a man who'll make a good match and determined not to suffer Jane's heartbreak, when she meets Mr. Darcy again at Rosings Park, she decides to become his slave and offers him her virginity.
But when she finds out that her cruel Master has destroyed Jane’s chance at marriage with Mr. Bingley, she rejects Mr. Darcy – even as he reluctantly proposes marriage to her. It isn’t until he saves her sister Lydia’s reputation and brings Jane and Bingley together, that Elizabeth realizes that she loves him. If he still loves her, she would be most willing to take her punishment for rejecting him – and live happily ever after.
