The Fake Job Offer That Could Cost You Everything

Think you’d never fall for a fake job offer? Think again. The fastest-growing scam in America right now isn’t about Nigerian princes or shady crypto—it’s texts offering high-paying jobs for easy tasks. And as the job market tightens, younger job seekers are falling hard.

Business Insider reported that according to the Federal Trade Commission, Americans lost nearly $470 million to scam texts in 2024. While fake delivery notices topped the list, job offer scams were number two. These messages often impersonate companies like Temu, Amazon, or Target and promise thousands in exchange for simple tasks like rating products or boosting apps.

What makes these scams particularly dangerous is how realistic they seem. Many victims are asked to share personal information, Social Security numbers, IDs, even bank details, under the guise of onboarding. The twist? Some are even told to purchase office equipment with fake checks and send back the “overpayment,” only to discover the checks bounce after their money is long gone.

The FTC’s Kati Daffan says reported losses to job scams have tripled since 2020. Proofpoint’s Selena Larson notes these scams thrive on emotional manipulation—excitement, urgency, and the fear of missing out on a rare opportunity.

And Gen Z is especially vulnerable. Between remote work expectations, a harsh job market, and a culture that handles everything by text, many don’t think twice about engaging with a recruiter over a messaging app. As one expert put it, younger users “just click, click, click.”

The rise of AI has made it even easier for scammers to craft realistic, mistake-free messages. Combine that with financial anxiety and a lack of coordinated enforcement, and you’ve got a scammer’s dream scenario.

The best defense? Slow down. Research the offer. If a job pays in crypto, conducts interviews via text, or asks for money upfront—it’s likely a scam. Real employers don’t operate like that.

Tom Hanks Responds to Daughter’s Allegations of Abuse in Memoir

Tom Hanks has broken his silence after his daughter, E.A. Hanks, alleged that her mother, Samantha Lewes, was physically and emotionally abusive.

In her memoir, The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road, which was published in April, E.A. claimed that her mother struggled with mental health issues after her divorce from Tom was finalized in 1987. In the book, E.A. details being hit, shaken, and at times locked in closets. She claimed that Lewes let their home spiral into messiness, with the fridge often empty or filled with spoiled food, as she sat in bed reading the Bible.

Speaking to Access Hollywood at the premiere of his new movie, The Phoenician Scheme, the veteran actor broke his silence regarding E.A.’s allegations. "It’s a pride because she’s been very open about what the process is," Tom said. “I’m not surprised that my daughter had the wherewithal, as well as the curiosity, as well as, I’m going to say, perhaps, the ‘shoot herself in the foot’ kind of wherewithal in order to examine this thing that I think she was incredibly honest about.

"We all come from checked or cracked lives. She knows that, and she leans into absolutely everything of it,” he added, calling E.A. a "bold journalistic literary mind."

E.A., whose real name is Elizabeth Anne, eventually moved in with her father full-time at the age of 12, shortly after Tom married his second wife, Rita Wilson. Lewes, who was born Susan Dillingham, passed away in 2002. Hanks and Lewes share a son, Colin, in addition to E.A.

After Losing Their House, This Couple Hiked 630 Miles to Their New Home

The Salt Path, a new film from first-time feature director Marianne Elliot, stars Gillian Anderson (The X-Files) and Jason Isaacs (The White Lotus) as Raynor and Moth Winn, a British couple who, after losing their home in 2013, set off on a 630-mile hike on Cornwall’s South West Coast Path. The screenplay, by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, is based upon Raynor’s 2018 memoir of the same name, which was universally praised and won several awards, including the Royal Society of Literature's inaugural Christopher Bland Prize and the Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing. Critics have equally lauded the film adaptation (it currently sits at 86 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), but does The Salt Path properly capture the specificity of its source material?

Related: Review: Is ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ a Hit or a Miss?

Elliot’s film picks up shortly after Raynor and Moth have set off on their journey, filling in the particulars of their circumstances with brief flashbacks. After losing to an unwise investment nearly all of their money and their farmstead, the home in which their children grew up and also the source of the family’s income, Raynor and Moth decide to walk the entirety of the South West Coast Path. This is particularly ill-advised as Moth has recently been diagnosed with the degenerative brain disease corticobasal degeneration (CBD), which normally carries a life expectancy of five to eight years. As they walk, Moth’s symptoms begin to dissipate, and he and Raynor discover a side of each other that’s lain dormant for decades.

Much like the book on which it’s based, The Salt Path is a powerful story well told in an unobtrusive, straightforward manner. Those who are unfamiliar with the true events and perhaps expecting a more linear narrative might be wrong-footed by the episodic structure, but the movie is more concerned with capturing the feeling of the characters and their predicament than detailing the specifics of it. (The inciting incident which costs them their home remains mostly unexplained.) It's about the way Raynor and Moth relate to one another, or sometimes fail to relate to one another. This is an ordinary but no less impactful real-life love story about a couple who ventured together through the very worst that life had to offer and came out stronger on the other side. More than the restorative powers of nature, The Salt Path is about the restorative powers of love.

Related: Review: ‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’ Brings the Franchise Back From the Dead

Elliot and her team capture the essence of Raynor and Moth’s journey, at times so vividly it feels as though the book has sprung from the page. It’s a shame that this lacks many of the louder qualities which often qualify a movie for awards contention, because The Salt Path really should be at the frontrunner of every race. Isaacs and Anderson, both tremendously accomplished actors, are as good as they’ve ever been. Both disappear into their roles with a breathtaking naturalism that’s so subtle, so un-actorly, that you actually forget you’re not watching the real people. Anderson, best known as Agent Scully on The X-Files, has over time quietly become one of the most reliable actors on screen. Her work here is genuinely astounding.

This is the sort of movie which, the more you consider and unpack it, the more it reveals hidden treasures. Things which at first seem a bit off—for example, an ending which initially feels abrupt—on reflection seem like the only logical choices in telling this story. The Cornish landscapes are sharply photographed and will have you digging in the closet to find your hiking boots (this would make an interesting double bill with Mark Evans’s Bait), but Elliot nicely foregrounds her characters rather than the sights that surround them. The Salt Path is a lovely, uncommonly low-key drama which serves as a perfect extension to the Winn's memoir. It’s hard to imagine a version which is more perfectly told, so graceful is the work of everyone involved. Hopefully, their efforts will be remembered come awards season.

The Salt Path is currently in cinemas.

Spirit Airlines Warns About Plans Amid Tariffs

Spirit Airlines has been in the middle of a brand overhaul in recent months and years as it looks to shed its budget airline reputation and compete with some of the other major airlines throughout the United States. However, a recent issue has the airline issuing a warning about its future plans.

As Kyle Stewart of Live and Let Fly pointed out in an article last month, Spirit Airlines should no longer be dismissed as just a budget airline.

"Spirit recently overhauled its Free Spirit loyalty program, and—brace yourselves—it’s good. Not 'good for Spirit,' but actually competitive with mainline carriers," Steward wrote for Live and Let Fly this week. "Elite members can now enjoy perks like free checked bags, seat selection (yes, even Big Front Seats), and priority boarding. And unlike American’s loyalty points or Delta’s SkyMiles circus, Free Spirit Status levels that award these perks are available at lower thresholds than any of the major carriers.

"Spirit also offers more nonstop flights from secondary cities than the other carriers," he continued. "For airports like my home airport in Pittsburgh, it’s often the only nonstop option or is more competitive in markets like New York (though it’s since discontinued flights between Pittsburgh and the New York market)."

But as Spirit tries to shed that label, the airline has been hit with a pretty significant issue that could hinder its growth and transformation.

Back in April, the Donald Trump presidential administration enacted a 20 percent tariff on all imports from the European Union. That tariff was quickly suspended, moving instead to a 10 percent rate, though that suspension expires in early July and could move back to 20 percent at that point.

Regardless, that could pose an issue for Spirit, which is set to receive 92 Airbus A320-family aircraft through 2031, imported from Europe and subject to those tariffs.

While Spirit needs these planes in order to achieve its rebrand, the airline issued a pretty clear warning earlier this week, making it clear that they could be forced to postpone or cancel deliveries of the Airbus aircraft. Or, they may choose to order fewer aircraft than initially intended.

"The imposition of tariffs will increase the cost of imported new Airbus aircraft and parts, which in turn could have a material adverse effect on our business, financial condition and/or results of operations. We may seek to postpone or cancel delivery of aircraft currently scheduled for delivery, and may choose not to purchase as many aircraft as we intended in the future," Spirit said in a statement.

Clearly, this is a concerning situation for the airliner as it attempts to shift its identity.

TSA Reportedly Ditching Surveillance Program

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is reportedly moving forward with a pretty significant change in the near future, as the Donald Trump presidential administration is reportedly set to end a prominent federal domestic surveillance program for travelers.

According to a report from CBS News, Trump plans to discontinue the TSA's "Quiet Skies" program, citing multiple anonymous sources. An unnamed U.S. official told the outlet that an official announcement about the move could come as soon as Thursday.

Quiet Skies, which began in 2010, is a government surveillance program that works to identify travelers who could present an elevated risk to aviation security.

The program utilizes analysts and undercover air marshals who are tasked with monitoring people in airports and during flights, according to CBS. The program makes use of outstanding warrants, facial recognition software, identification of suspicious travel patterns and behaviors, and other data to try to prevent terrorist attacks.

While the program was designed to stop terrorist attacks before they happen, it has received a lot of criticism as innocent Americans have been targeted with invasive and inconvenient searches at U.S. airports over the years.

The TSA's surveillance program has also received criticism for tracking U.S. citizens not suspected of any crimes, and it's never been clear what exactly would land an individual on the Quiet Skies list.

Another U.S official told CBS News that aides have debated how to shut down the controversial program without resulting in any lapses in security.

We'll have to see how the change impacts the agency's security efforts.

Taylor Swift Shows Respect to Restaurant Workers

Over the years, pop sensation Taylor Swift has developed quite a reputation for being respectful and down-to-earth whenever she interacts with ordinary people, despite her enormous fame. And that respectfulness was once again on display on Wednesday night.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have spent the past several months largely out of the public eye as they have enjoyed some private time together after a particularly busy time in both of their lives.

"They have been traveling nonstop and very much enjoy it," a source told People recently. "They are making the most of their time off together. They are hanging out with friends, too. It's a special time for them... They value the same things. Right now, the focus is very much on private time out of the spotlight."

On Wednesday night, however, Taylor and Travis were spotted out on what appeared to be a date night at a restaurant.

Taylor and Travis were seen leaving the restaurant together, but before they walked out the door and to the black SUV waiting for them, Taylor had some very kind and respectful words to one of the restaurant employees.

"Appreciate it so much!" Taylor told the employee. "We'll definitely be back."

Obviously, it would have been far easier for Taylor to hurry out the door and into the SUV, especially given the crowd awaiting her outside, but she took the time to express her gratitude.

Needless to say, the way she treated the employee quickly turned heads as fans gave her praise.

"Taypolite," one fan wrote in a post on X.

"That’s my respectful queen," a fan added.

"I love how polite and kind they both are to everyone," someone else wrote.

"One thing about them they always make sure to thank the workers," another fan commented.

Kelce received plenty of praise himself for the way he spoke to the fans waiting outside the restaurant.

They might be the most famous couple on the planet, but they're nothing but kind and respectful.

Travis Kelce Was a Gentleman to Taylor Swift Fans on Wednesday

Ever since he began dating Taylor Swift back in 2023, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has dealt with the surge in fame quite well, answering questions about their relationship with grace and never losing his cool with fans or the paparazzi. That was once again the case on Wednesday night.

Over the past few months, Travis and Taylor have spent a lot of time outside of the spotlight, enjoying some quality time together.

"They have been traveling nonstop and very much enjoy it," a source told People recently. "They are making the most of their time off together. They are hanging out with friends, too. It's a special time for them...They value the same things. Right now, the focus is very much on private time out of the spotlight."

On Wednesday night, however, the two were seen out together on what appeared to be a dinner date.

Naturally, when word began to spread about the star-studded couple's location, fans began to gather outside of the restaurant. However, Kelce handled the crowd with grace.

After exiting the restaurant, Travis did not hurry to the car or try to shield himself from the fan attention. Instead, he looked right at the group of fans, acknowledged them, and addressed them.

"Hey guys," Travis said with a smile on his face. "Have a good night, guys!"

Needless to say, Kelce was quickly praised for the way he interacted with the fans.

"Travis is so much more polite than I would have been," one fan wrote in a post on X.

"Okay but respect to Travis for acknowledging them," another person added.

"he is always so kind even with the screeching lol," someone else wrote.

"In a world of boys he's a gentleman..." another fan added.

"Travis is such a humble and considerate guy. A gentleman," someone else commented.

Clearly, fans were impressed with the way he handled the situation.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Spotted Out Together

Taylor Swift and her football star boyfriend, Travis Kelce, have been keeping a relatively low profile in recent months as the couple has been out of the spotlight enjoying some more private time together.

"They have been traveling nonstop and very much enjoy it," a source told People recently. "They are making the most of their time off together. They are hanging out with friends, too. It's a special time for them...They value the same things. Right now, the focus is very much on private time out of the spotlight."

Though they have kept a low profile and haven't made a lot of public appearances, Taylor and Travis were spotted out together on Wednesday night as they apparently had dinner together.

In a video shared to social media by an X user by the name of Danielle, Taylor and Travis could be seen exiting what appears to be a restaurant before getting into a black SUV together.

— Danielle🤍 (@dhart0412) June 5, 2025

Taylor was wearing a short black dress while Travis wore a black short-sleeved button-down shirt with black and white checkered pants.

As they left the restaurant, Taylor could be heard saying, "Appreciate it so much, we'll definitely be back."

Travis, meanwhile, addressed the fans standing outside.

"Hey guys," Travis said. "Have a good night, guys!"

Needless to say, their appearance together on Wednesday night quickly turned heads as fans offered their reactions.

"What a lovely couple they are!" one fan wrote in a post on X.

"Travis is so much more polite than I would have been," someone else added.

"Okay but respect to Travis for acknowledging them," another person added.

"he is always so kind even with the screeching lol," someone else wrote.

"In a world of boys he's a gentleman..." another fan added.

We'll have to see where they will be spotted next.

Why Mosquitoes Are Getting More Dangerous—And What You Can Do About It

Texas officials are warning residents to brace themselves—not for hurricanes or heatwaves, but for something far smaller and deadlier: mosquitoes.

Thanks to recent storms and rising global temperatures, health officials say mosquito season is arriving early, lasting longer, and becoming far more dangerous, according to the Austin American-Statesman. Experts are sounding the alarm as conditions across the South, from Texas to Florida, create a perfect breeding ground for the so-called deadliest animal on the planet.

“Mosquito seasons are running longer than before,” said Marcel Elizondo, head of Austin’s Environmental Health Services division. “We’re seeing more standing water, more heat, and more ideal conditions for mosquito reproduction.”

That’s bad news when you consider what mosquitoes actually bring with them.

According to the American Mosquito Control Association, mosquitoes kill over 1 million people a year worldwide, not directly, but by spreading devastating diseases like malaria, dengue, Zika, and West Nile. Malaria alone is responsible for more than 600,000 preventable deaths annually, and U.S. cases of West Nile and Zika are climbing in southern states.

"Mosquitoes are the deadliest animals on the planet," Bethany Bolling, who leads virus testing for the Texas Department of State Health Services, told KAXN.

Climate change is supercharging the threat. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, warmer temperatures speed up mosquito lifecycles, increase biting rates, and accelerate the disease incubation process inside the insect. Add in flooding and standing water from spring storms, and you've got a perfect storm.

What can you do? Public health officials recommend draining standing water from gutters, buckets, and flower pots, fixing leaks, and treating ponds with mosquito dunks. If you're hiking or camping, DEET-based repellents and full-coverage clothing are your best bet.

This isn’t just about comfort. It’s about stopping a silent killer from getting louder and protecting your health while enjoying the outdoors.
