Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Hot on the heels of the stunning Christmas special promotional photo, the BBC has released a brand new Sherlock trailer!
Featuring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in their Victorian guises (as opposed to the modernised, contemporary setting we’re used to) there’s a fair old chance that you’ll be able to watch this on Christmas Day itself…
The boys will be back soon…ish! Here's the first look at the new #Sherlock special. Enjoy! #221Back

As you’ll notice, it is a collection of rather… knowing dialogue, which will either make for 90 minutes of laughter or grating annoyance, depending upon how you enjoy it.
We will, as ever, have the latest big Sherlock news as and when it becomes available.

Frazer Hines: “Doctor Who Was Such A Happy Time”
Jonathan Appleton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Frazer Hines has spoken of his enduring affection for the role that made him a well-known face on British television in an interview for a new tour of an Agatha Christie play.
Fresh from his recent visit to the Doctor Who set to meet the current incarnation of the Doctor, Frazer is promoting his forthcoming appearance as the butler in Christie classic And Then There Were None which will be at the Milton Keynes Theatre later this month. Speaking of playing Jamie McCrimmon opposite the Second Doctor, he said:
“I never expected that it would have the kind of legacy it has. We are talking nearly 50 years ago and it is still going strong. It was a job that I enjoyed every minute of. A lot of the time, you think I hope so and so is a good mood, or they haven’t had a row with their partner. There was never that feeling on Doctor Who, it was always such a happy time.”
Although keen to put in a decent plug for the play which features a roster of familiar small-screen names including Paul Nicholas, Mark Curry and Colin Buchanan, Frazer is more than happy to reflect on his time in the TARDIS, and even make a plea for a run of repeat screenings:
“The shows still stand up very well. I watched the recently recovered The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear and I thought they stood up so well. You could put them on to television today and no one would bat an eyelid. I’ve always thought that since the show was bought back. They should repeat one story from each Doctor for the classic era. I was told the BBC wouldn’t put black and white stories on repeat but they have done it with old episodes of Dad’s Army, why wouldn’t they do it for Doctor Who?”

Titan Comics’ Eleventh Doctor #6 Reviewed!
Jeremy Remy is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
When we last left off, the Doctor, Alice and Jones had been joined by ARC, a living mind with a shapeshifting form, and the TARDIS team had safely left the United System Research Base. As Space In Dimension Relative And Time begins, however, Jones is dead.
The Eleventh Doctor #6 follows a storyline which stands on its own. This one-shot story suggests some missing adventures have occurred between this tale and the last, including one where Jones adopted a new Ziggy Stardust-like look. The tension between Alice and Jones appears to have grown exponentially, and ARC has developed into a more stable individual from its last appearance. We are also introduced to Dave, a new companion who I can only hope shows up in later issues.
For this story, Rob Williams makes use of the comic format to provide a uniquely transtemporal narrative, while reintroducing a race from Classic Who: the Nimon. As the title of the story suggests, this is Doctor Who meets Memento; the story is told from “The End” to “The Beginning,” with the page numbers counting down accordingly. However, this structure isn’t simply a narrative device. Rather, the Doctor is aware of time running backwards, due to a secondary backward consciousness unique to Time Lords. It’s a clever plot element, but it also makes for a very interesting read.
Simon Fraser draws the Nimon in a way that suggests their original appearance in The Horns of Nimon, but allows for a more alien and strange form than could be accomplished using 1979 BBC television special effects. The superior size and bizarre shape of the Nimon—particularly when seen next to Alice and Jones—allows the reader to experience the threat of this creature in a new way. This version is more frightening and feels more godlike than its on-screen cousins.
The story occurs almost exclusively inside the TARDIS, giving the reader an opportunity to see a few previously unexplored TARDIS corridors and cul-de-sacs. There are moments of character development that give the reader insight into the interpersonal feelings of characters. Yet, overall, the story is less about setting or character, and more about plot. Williams gives the reader an adventure that would be difficult and confusing to achieve on-screen, in a format that encourages readers to explore the tale from finish to start and back again.
Space In Dimension Relative And Time is a great jumping-on point for new readers of The Eleventh Doctor, and it uses the comic book medium to tell a singular tale that draws the reader in and demands a re-read. While it suggests an interesting future for this TARDIS crew, fans of timey-wimey stories and more challenging narrative structures will find the issue of particular interest.
Overall, this installment suggests the future of this comic series will be one that takes Doctor Who into areas less often explored in other media options.
Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor #6 is out now, priced $3.99.

Watch The Full SDCC 2015 Doctor Who Panel
Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
There are many of us who couldn’t make it to the San Diego Comic Con, however exciting it sounds, and however much was promised from the Who panel.
That panel took place last night and by now, you must’ve seen the trailer. It’s amazing, and if you haven’t watched it yet, you need to get on that straight away. And then look at our in-depth breakdown!
Fortunately, the kind people at Flicks and the City recorded the Doctor Who panel, and you can watch it from the comfort of your own home/during lunchtime/on public transport. Frankly, just anywhere. Peter Capaldi, the Twelfth Doctor himself, is joined by Jenna Coleman (Clara Oswald), Michelle Gomez (Missy), and showrunner, Steven Moffat (hosted by Chris Hardwick) as they discuss what’s to come, what’s just been, and, once again, address the female Doctor thing.
Series 9 launches on 19th September, so it’s due to finish on 5th December (if there are no scheduling delays). And then, so to Christmas! We won’t have long to twiddle our thumbs between the finale and the special, that’s for sure.
The Doctor and Clara Oswald are having the time of their lives, meeting enemies new and old – Missy, the Mire, ghosts, and of course, Daleks – and going on a journey that takes them to deadly alien planets, creepy underwater bases, Vikings villages, a global Zygon uprising, and leads them through hidden alien dens, to the very end of time itself…
We can’t wait!

First Doctor Who Series 9 Trailer Breakdown
Richard Forbes is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
‘It’s impossible. It’s evil. It’s astonishing,’ says the Doctor, summing up the first Doctor Who Series 9 trailer to perfection.
The new trailer was released yesterday and…wow, wow, wow, wow! A lot of wows, but that’s how I felt while watching this whopper a trailer. If you haven’t watched it yet, give it a watch – I’ll be breaking down the various elements of the trailer and offer some speculation along the way, but there’s no way I could give proper justice to the trailer as far as the experience of personally watching it goes – watch the trailer for yourself and enjoy!
What’s striking about this trailer is its look – it’s big and cinematic – it feels like watching a trailer for Star Wars or something of that sort. When I first saw it, it reminded me of how I felt when I first watched The Day of the Doctor trailer – in the sense that it came as a bit of a shock because it ‘looked’ different (in a good way) than the smaller scale that I had been used to with Doctor Who. Series 9 looks to be a balance of action, fun and mischief; militarism and mysticism. I also got a real sense from this trailer that the main characters involved had evolved in their relationship and there was an exciting new dynamic here at play.
Over the trailer’s many visuals, the Doctor makes some very curious remarks: ‘Every time I think it can’t get any more extraordinary, it surprises me. It’s impossible. It’s evil. It’s astonishing. I want to kiss it to death. I’m the Doctor and I save people.’
The trailer begins with the TARDIS flying through space. The Doctor scuttles around the console, sparks flying.
0:08 Clara runs down a corridor – a base of some sort – in distress. Clara’s yellow outfit, shown above, made its debut in a BBC America video with Ray Holman, costume designer – that same yellow outfit was spotted in a select few set photos in connection with the Toby Whithouse two-parter (which we know very little about). As the trailer progresses, we see more of these corridors and just what it is exactly that is chasing Clara – those clues also point to the mysterious Whithouse two-parter.
0:09 The Doctor (?) makes a diving finish through a closing gateway – water fills the base corridor. There are symbols on the gate as it closes but largely indiscernible – there’s a rumour that the base that the Whithouse two-parter is set in is Russian and I thought, perhaps, the far right symbol could be an ‘X’ in Russian cursive … or it’s a pair of butterfly wings.
0:09 A shot of Sophie Stone’s character, Cass from, once again, the Whithouse two-parter. Looking concerned.
0:10 Whatever the hell that thing is. Almost looks like a Yeti? An interesting sort of crown of flowers adorning its head. The background features wood panelling, which suggests to me that this creature is from a different episode than the watery military base we’ve seen so far…
0:10 Crunch goes a Dalek! There’s been a rumour that Davros might return for Series 9, but before now there had been no sighting to suggest the Daleks might make a return.
0:13 A very deep blue eye opens; someone with darker skin. Their eyes appear dilated and there’s some strange characters (alien?) in his eyes’ reflection.
0:14 It’s ‘Lights out!’ for this strange military base. Earth Day, perhaps? Once again, the floors appear flooded but this time there almost seems to be a kind of paranormal, green energy forming in the water. Also, the walls appear coated in a dark substance – soot, oil, grime, octopus ink-? It should also be said there is a skylight in this corridor and skylights appear to be common throughout this base.
0:19 A row of new monsters – these armoured baddies were revealed earlier, but appear to be from Series 9’s The Girl Who Died, although it’s unclear at the moment whether that story is linked with the next episode, The Woman Who Lived or not yet.
0:20 Muddy hands rise from the earth. It’s interesting that it appears to be two hands, like someone putting their hands up in defeat or as a surrender.
0:22 A bearded ape-like man wearing a suit and a top hat with empty eyesockets (?) He’s walking down a corridor with people trailing him as though he’s important… a big bad, even. I’m wondering if this is Paul Kaye’s ‘Prentis’ from the Whithouse two-parter – Kaye suggested he’d be wearing a lot of prosthetics (having spent a lot of time in the makeup trailer), so much so that he’d be unrecognizable.
0:23 Many have suggested the Dalek on the left might be an original 1960s Dalek. But the mixing of the Time War Daleks with the early Skaro Dalek design seems jarringly wrong. However, suppose the Doctor is returning Skaro to a similar period as 1963’s The Daleks – what if the Daleks also returned from the future too? They’re both capable of time travel after all. Having both sides rewrite history here would be a completely different take on Genesis of the Daleks. After all, if The Daleks hadn’t proceeded as it had, would the Doctor be, well, the Doctor? Food for thought.
0:25 Two faces? Or two heads? Interesting hat too. Whatever alien culture they’re a part of, they seem to be fascinated with threes – three shots, three piles of cards, plus triangles / arrows on the wallpaper.
0:26 A glimpse of a menacing face, perhaps a big baddie. The mask he’s wearing reminds me of the eyes of the monsters from The Girl Who Died. The windy, long hair makes me think ‘Viking’. Perhaps Odin? Or some sort of alien, Viking god?
0:29 Once more from the Whithouse two-parter, I’d bet, given the base’s watery, grungy appearance. A man sits against a door labeled, ‘Radioactive Material’ looking particularly distressed.
0:30 Missy putting her lipstick on, spotting a laser dot (from a weapon presumably) on her mirror. It might be trivial to note but it looks green around Missy, despite the fact that the outside filming spotted by fans had her principally in Spain with its arid backdrop. Was there some exterior shooting with Missy that might have been missed?
0:35 A shameless shrug from the Doctor.
0:37 A pan across a gorgeous, sunny alien landscape. Some have suggested this city resembles Dalek City (Skaro) from The Daleks.
0:40 A new creepy face, mystic robes. His face, butchered. Sliced.
0:40 The curious mind wonders if we might be set for a return to Karn – especially with those familiar red robes, those torches and… yeah, The Night of the Doctor’s Clare Higgins returning for the season premiere.
0:42 New lighting in the TARDIS emphasises the roundels in the background! And the orange spacesuit has made its triumphant return…
Some close-ups on the Doctor, Missy …. and…
0:49 Another eyeless man. His ghostly appearance echoes Moffat’s early remarks about Whithouse’s two-parter, when he called it a ‘ghost story’.
0:51 An underwater city of sorts. Awesome.
0:53 The Doctor runs past some Viking (?) dudes hanging around and embraces Clara – why is he so happy to see her? He’s clutching a book in his hand which reminds me faintly of Troughton’s Five Hundred Year Diary.
0:54 Another shot of Clara in peril.
0:55 I know, I know… you’re exciting about the Zygons returning, but won’t anyone THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!
0:57 Whohoo! The Doctor playing an electric guitar. Wow! With cool shades too.
0:58 Some nightmare fuel for the kiddies, I see. Interestingly, this monster also lacks eyes.
0:59 Clara in Space.
1:00 An absolutely bizarre kind of creature moving down a tunnel here. Its body appears to be a floating apparition of some kind.
1:00 It’s been suggested that the Doctor and Clara are being chased here by a Cyberman because of that guy’s faint, glowing centerpiece, not to mention his lumbering gait. I think it’s safe to say it’s the same eyeless man as we saw at 0:49. What do you think? Cyber or no Cyber?
1:01 Soldiers being chased on a battlefield by what looks like biplanes fitted with blue laser rays (Dalek technology?).
1:01 A closer look at the attires of the soldiers. It looks like they have gasmasks hanging off their faces. Genesis of the Daleks, anyone?
1:02 Missy and Clara seem kind of close here. There’s been a lot of speculation over what role Missy will play in the season premiere. Moffat discussed Missy and the Doctor’s special relationship at Comic-Con, noting ‘they’re incredibly good friends and it goes back a long way and there’s genuine affection and loyalty and compassion for each other and interest in each other. But they are completely opposed to each other. If there was no one else in the universe, they’d be getting on fine. But Missy is the Doctor by other means. That’s what he’d be like if he didn’t have this sentimental compulsion to save people. It’s a hunter and a vegetarian having a friendship.’
1:03 Looking good, Doc.
1:06 A wild Sonic Screwdriver zings through the air.
1:08 This looks similar to the scene previously teased in Entertainment Weekly; a picture which Capaldi has suggested ‘hints at a battle, it hints at the Doctor being in a very traditional battlefield, in which he tries to help a victim of war… but it backfires.’
1:22 Maisie Williams removes her burglar mask, teasing the Doctor with ‘What took you so long, old man?’ after the Doctor curiously says ‘…You?’ Fans have been wildly speculating on the comments below on YouTube over Maisie’s character – some suggesting she might be playing the Doctor’s granddaughter, Susan or Jenny, the Rani, Romana or a regenerated River Song. Personally I suspect she’s playing a new character, but I’m a boring human being and absolutely no fun at all.
As per the trailer’s announcement, Doctor Who will return September 19 – and after this tease, I can’t wait!
Series 9 seems to be a very different breed of Doctor Who than what we’ve seen before. Big, cinematic, action-packed and full of intrigue. There’s no stopping this hype train, baby!

Doctor Who Series 9 Trailer Unveiled at San Diego Comic Con
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Exploding with epic and thrilling adventures, Doctor Who returns to BBC AMERICA on Saturday, September 19 in the new season of the hit show. And the official Doctor Who website is currently listing the same date – barely a surprise as the piracy-beating synchronized scheduling has worked very well over the past four years.
We will, of course, await confirmationon this point.
The trailer sees the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) joined by Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) for time travel on a cinematic scale. Having the time of their lives, the pair meet new and old monsters, and go on a journey that takes them to deadly alien planets, creepy underwater bases, Vikings villages, a global Zygon uprising, and leads them through hidden alien dens, to the very end of time itself. Meeting monsters old and new the Doctor will come face to face with Missy (Michelle Gomez), a city of Daleks, deadly mercenaries called the Mire, terrifying ghosts and more.
You can see all of this in the trailer above, and we’ll have a trailer breakdown for you shortly.
Having filmed in Cardiff since January, Peter Capaldi said:
“Soaring through all of time and space, series nine sees the Doctor throw himself into life with a new hunger for adventure. The Cosmos is there for the taking, thrilling, epic and enticing, and his to play in. But he’s almost reckless in his abandon. It’s almost like he’s running from something, something that if it ever catches him will turn his life upside down.”
A considerable cast of guest stars has been assembled for Doctor Who Series 9. Michelle Gomez (Missy) returns to plague the Doctor and Clara in the season opener, and UNIT are back with Jemma Redgrave and Ingrid Oliver (Osgood) returning to season nine following their popular entrance in Series 8, while young new talent Maisie Williams, (Arya Stark in the fantasy drama series Game of Thrones) will also be appearing. Further names include Rebecca Front, Rufus Hound, Paul Kaye, Joivan Wade and Sophie Stone. Shooting continues on the show at Roath Lock studios, Cardiff Bay, Wales, having filmed in Tenerife, and South Wales locations, Caerwent, Caerphilly Castle, Cardiff Castle, St Athans and Margam Park.
Other guest cast includes: Colin McFarlane, Morven Christie, Arsher Ali, Zaqi Ismail, Steven Robertson, Tom Stourton, Ariyon Bakare, Simon Lipkin, Ian Conningham, Murray McArthur, Barnaby Kay, John Voce, Struan Rodger, Jaye Griffiths, Cleopatra Dickens, Sasha Dickens, Abhishek Singh, Todd Kramer, Jill Winternitz, Nicholas Asbury, Jack Parker, Aidan Cook, Daniel Hoffmann-Gill, Jami Reid-Quarrell, Aaron Neil, India Ria Amarteifio, Joey Price, Dasharn Anderson, Harki Bhambra, Demi Papaminas, Simon Lipkin, Ian Conningham, Murray McArthur, Barnaby Kay, John Voce, Struan Rodger, Ariyon Bakare, Naomi Ackie, Simon Manyonda, Simon Paisley Day, Letitia Wright, Robin Soans, Angela Clerkin, Caroline Boulton, Jenny Lee.
The show’s ninth season has been written by lead writer Steven Moffat, Toby Whithouse, Jamie Mathieson, Peter Harness, Mark Gatiss, and new writers to Doctor Who – Sarah Dollard and Catherine Tregenna; directed by Hettie Macdonald, Daniel O’Hara, Ed Bazalgette, Daniel Nettheim, Justin Molotnikov, Rachel Talalay; and produced by Tracie Simpson, Derek Ritchie, Nikki Wilson and Peter Bennett.
One last thing to look out for: designer Michael Pickwoad has introduced brand new roundels to the inside of TARDIS. Oh yes!

First Look: LEGO Dimensions Gameplay With Louis Moffat
Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Ever wanted to see Batman in the TARDIS? What if he was made of Lego? Yep: you’re sold on this, right?
Well, the Fan Show have given us all a sneak peek at the gameplay of the upcoming release, LEGO Dimensions – and Steven Moffat’s son, Louis is playing it! It’s pretty awesome. LEGO Dimensions is the new Toys-To-Life game from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and features the biggest brand mash-ups the gaming world has ever seen.
We get glimpses of the Doctor (confirmed to be voiced by Peter Capaldi himself) alongside other famous franchise characters including Homer Simpson, and Lord of the Rings‘ Gandalf – as well as a CyberKing dreadnaught, classic TARDIS consoles, and even, it seems, a Special Weapons Dalek. Which the Doctor takes a ride on.
And we also briefly see the additional Doctor Who pack enabling gamers to play as the Doctor, and also includes buildable characters including the TARDIS and K9. That’ll be released in November and will further unlock mission-based levels and unique in-game abilities.
Oh, and about 2 minutes in, just look at Peter’s reaction to seeing William Hartnell, the First Doctor. How lovely. And yeah, how great! Hartnell. In a game. Made of Lego. Surely testament to the love and respect for the show’s 52-year history (well, nearly 52 years, okay?).
LEGO Dimensions is coming to the Wii U, XBox One and 360, and PlayStations 3 and 4 on 29th September in the UK. For once, I’m actually actively excited about a LEGO game!
Take a look at our exclusive Kasterborous Magazine #2, an immersive look at the various Doctor Who attempts to get into the gaming world, including Worlds in Time, The Eternity Clock, and Legacy, and the LEGO Dimensions‘ trailer.

Sherlock: First Official Christmas Special Photo
Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
To coincide with the San Diego Comic Con, the BBC has released the first official photo from the upcoming Christmas special of Sherlock.
It sees Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman’s Dr John Watson in period dress, as it’s believed the special is set in 1895 – quite different from the modern feel of the previous three series!
They’re coming back… Here’s the first official photo from the upcoming Sherlock special #221Back pic.twitter.com/b8jbd1QZGe
— Sherlock (@Sherlock221B) July 8, 2015
Nice moustache, Watson.
In May, Steven Moffat, co-creator of the show, revealed this was simply a desire to see the pair as Conan Doyle intended:
“We’ve got, I think you can safely say, the Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson of a generation – we want to see them do it in the proper outfits, just once. That makes them the only two who’ve done both [period and contemporary] – apart from [Basil] Rathbone and [Nigel] Bruce, who we venerate, of course.”
Meanwhile, at the SDCC, Moffat and Lestrade actor, Rupert Graves (Dinosaurs on a Spaceship), spoke about what to expect.
Graves talks about imagining his character in the 1890s, while Moffat discusses scheduling, and the “unique rate of delivery” – ie. that we only typically get three episodes every couple of years. Indeed, producer Sue Vertue previously revealed that Series 4 starts shooting in Spring 2016.
You’ll be able to see Cumberbatch and Freeman in their roles once more this Christmas. I reckon Christmas Eve, but nothing’s been confirmed.
Expect more news from both Doctor Who and Sherlock over the weekend as the SDCC hits its stride!

Series 9: Vikings on a Spaceship!
Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
In 2012, we had dinosaurs; this year, it appears we’re getting vikings on a spaceship!
Speaking at the San Diego Comic Con, Peter Capaldi has revealed a very small detail about Series 9: that we’ll finally see some vikings. Asked whether he, Jenna Coleman, and Michelle Gomez (aka Missy) have any favourite episodes of the new run, he says he particularly enjoyed seeing such a Doctor Who idea:
“Yes, we like vikings. And seeing vikings on a spaceship is so incredibly Doctor Who… [Jenna] started on that before I did… so I walked in and saw you in a spacesuit on a spaceship with a pile of vikings – and it just looked absolutely amazing.”
Hmm. I wonder if Clara will be wearing that red Sanctuary Base Six suit that’s cropped up in 42, Hide, and Kill the Moon.
They’re likely talking about the linked stories, The Girl Who Died and The Woman Who Lived, written by Jamie Matheison, Steven Moffat, and Catherine Tregenna, and starring Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams. Certainly photos from filming hint at that era.
Vikings, of course, will be a nice change for the show: apart from allusions in The Curse of Fenric, the only time we’ve seen them on-screen is in 1965’s The Time Meddler!
Check out the interview to find out how Jenna feels to be one of the longest-lasting companions, how flattered Michelle was to be invited back so soon after Death in Heaven, and how Peter’s quest to get the Mondasian Cybermen back. Oh, and then watch as he’s trying to work out which companion stayed in the TARDIS longest. There’s a great moment when you can see it ticking through his mind…
