In 2012, we had dinosaurs; this year, it appears we’re getting vikings on a spaceship!
Speaking at the San Diego Comic Con, Peter Capaldi has revealed a very small detail about Series 9: that we’ll finally see some vikings. Asked whether he, Jenna Coleman, and Michelle Gomez (aka Missy) have any favourite episodes of the new run, he says he particularly enjoyed seeing such a Doctor Who idea:
“Yes, we like vikings. And seeing vikings on a spaceship is so incredibly Doctor Who… [Jenna] started on that before I did… so I walked in and saw you in a spacesuit on a spaceship with a pile of vikings – and it just looked absolutely amazing.”
Hmm. I wonder if Clara will be wearing that red Sanctuary Base Six suit that’s cropped up in 42, Hide, and Kill the Moon.
They’re likely talking about the linked stories, The Girl Who Died and The Woman Who Lived, written by Jamie Matheison, Steven Moffat, and Catherine Tregenna, and starring Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams. Certainly photos from filming hint at that era.
Vikings, of course, will be a nice change for the show: apart from allusions in The Curse of Fenric, the only time we’ve seen them on-screen is in 1965’s The Time Meddler!
Check out the interview to find out how Jenna feels to be one of the longest-lasting companions, how flattered Michelle was to be invited back so soon after Death in Heaven, and how Peter’s quest to get the Mondasian Cybermen back. Oh, and then watch as he’s trying to work out which companion stayed in the TARDIS longest. There’s a great moment when you can see it ticking through his mind…
