Peter Capaldi Shops for his Outfit…

Drew Boynton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Will it be a return to ruffled shirts? Baggy check trousers? A long trench coat or an even longer scarf, perhaps? Or how about some completely-off-the-wall quasi-futuristic super shiny spandex number?

Whatever the case - and hopefully it’s not that last one – Steven Moffat says that Peter Capaldi is currently putting together his official Twelfth Doctor outfit:

“[Peter] was texting me ‘I’m out with [the wardrobe stylist] at the moment, it’s going quite well’ and some descriptions of clothes I did not understand. If it’s not a suit…”

And although the showrunner has the ultimate thumbs up or thumbs down, it doesn’t sound like he actually has much say in the matter…

“I’ll just let them get on with it and it’ll be ‘yes’ or ‘no’ a the end. Matt said ‘I should be a boffin, I think I need to go with the bow tie’ and I said ‘No, absolutely not, you’re not wearing a bow tie – that’s a cartoon idea of what Doctor Who is… Oh, you are going to wear a bow tie – you look incredible in it. And from that moment on he suddenly came to life…he was the Doctor.”

Kasterborites, it’s time to put on your thinking bow-ties. If there was one item that would make Capaldi’s Doctor look iconic, what would it be? And vice versa, is there a clothing item (fez? question mark jumper?) that would totally ruin him for you?

Hmmm, maybe that spandex wouldn’t be such a bad idea…

(Thanks to DoctorWhoTV.)

PodKasting from the Doctor Who Missing Episodes Event!

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastThis week’s podKast brings a selection of interviews from the recent Doctor Who missing episodes event in London. Thanks to Gareth Kavanagh you can expect to hear from Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling – who both appeared in the recovered episodes of The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear as companions Jamie McCrimmon and Victoria Waterfield – and writer Mark Gatiss, whose passion for the London Underground leads him to tell us something about an upcoming Sherlock episode…

All of this means, however, that the usual trio of Christian, James and Brian has been dispensed with for a week. Instead, Christian and Gareth Kavanagh, editor of Vworp Vworp! and our man on the ground at the event, discuss and introduce clips from the exciting day in London in which long lost episodes of Doctor Who were screened for the first time in 45 years!

Tenth Doctor Deluxe Framed Print

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Time is of the essence if you want to get your hands on one of these limited edition Tenth Doctor 50th anniversary deluxe frame prints.

The prints – which come in all eleven incarnations of the Doctor – are based upon the iconic TARDIS doors (which, instead of their usual public address, share a little of the legacy of your chosen Doctor) and are presented on a conservation quality mount board with beautiful foil finished frame. The images in question for the Tenth Doctor print come from Love & Monsters as the Doctor asks Elton, ‘don’t I know you?’, the Time Lord Victorious from The Waters of Mars and a promotional photo for The Christmas Invasion, shortly after the regeneration of the Ninth Doctor, alongside Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler.

These fantastic 16 x 20″ prints are limited to 50 per Doctor and can be pre-ordered now from Forbidden Planet for release on 25th October for £59.99.

Moffat Wants Doctor Who/ Star Trek Crossover

James Lomond is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

STOP EVERYTHING. Moffat has said yes to a Doctor Who/Star Trek crossover – all it needs is for the makers of America’s biggest sci-fi franchise to agree and we can make it so. Biggest Geekgasm imaginable. Speaking at the Radio Times sponsored Cheltenham Literature Festival, Moffat said he’d be on board for a collaboration if the yanks were keen.

“It’d be brilliant fun… I would do it in a shot – of course I would.”

Of course this has happened already in comic book form (or ‘graphic novel’ if you, like me, count it as propa literature). Assimilation2 saw Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Jean-Luc Picard team up with the Eleventh Doctor, Amy and Rory to battle Cybermen/Borg cyborg smorgasbord. While some purists on both sides might object to mixing the canon of Who and Trek, there can’t be many sci-fi fans who wouldn’t love to hear the TARDIS materialising on the bridge of Picard’s Enterprise. However Moffat is, as you’d expect, realistic

“I’d do it – I can’t imagine they would. I can’t imagine they would do it, because they’re too protective.”

Of course he’s right. Though I would argue that the BBC is equally protective of their brand and neither would want to come off as the lesser cousin. It does raise some interesting questions about the shows and how they aim to be seen. Trek has had eccentric semi-mythical beings with powers bordering on the supernatural with ‘Q’ and Who can easily accommodate the space-opera premise of Trek. But arguably, since the major re-imagining of Star Trek with Chris Pine at the helm, the brand is too loud. I can’t really see it accommodating the whimsy and playfulness of Doctor Who with the sheeny, serious approach of the new franchise.

An interesting point has been raised in the past that American sci-fi seems to be more about official government teams with a designated leader whereas Brits tend to tell stories about lone anti-establishment mavericks like Doctor Who, Blake’s Seven and Adam Adamant Lives! (Yes, he does count, move along).

Can a captain and a renegade Timelord share leading-man status? What do you think – could the two exist side-by-side? Who would come out on top? (See what I did there…?)

New Sherlock Episode Inspired By Mark Gatiss’ Tube Obsession

Meredith Burdett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Well, that was quite a week wasn’t it? Put aside for one second the fact that we’ve still got two of the biggest episodes of NuWho to look forward to this year, the BBC go and pull the rug out from under our feet and give us two classic Second Doctor stories that we never thought we’d have the pleasure of ever seeing again!

The BFI event on Thursday was an enormous success with Deborah Watling and Fraser Hines on hand to oversee the first viewing of the episode in 45 years, also in attendance was writer and sometimes guest star for Doctor Who, Mark Gatiss.

The excited actor also revealed to Kasterborous’ Gareth Kavanagh that The Web of Fear, one of the stories that were recovered, has inspired his story from the upcoming series of Sherlock:

I am obsessed with the Tube and I think it all comes from that story when I was a kid…the first episode of Sherlock is explicitly about the London Underground for exactly that reason – because I love ‘The Web of Fear’!

The Web of Fear takes place in the gloomy tunnels of the London Underground and finds the Second Doctor and his friends up against the Great Intelligence, who presumably laid out this careful plan thanks to events from 2012’s The Snowmen.

Quite how Gatiss’s episode will compare is anyone’s guess but it’s good to know that he’s injecting some Doctor Who flavour into his other series!

You can hear more from the Mark Gatiss as well as Frazer Hines, Deborah Watling and many others at the missing episodes event in this week’s podKast, available soon.

THE GODFATHER

With excerpts from a previously unpublished archive interview, DWM presents a profile of SYDNEY NEWMAN, the man responsible for the birth of Doctor Who and for revolutionising TV drama production in the UK in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Peter Capaldi To Help Unlock Art

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

New Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi, Frank Skinner and Alan Cumming are among the celebrities joining forces in a new series of films which aims to unlock big ideas that have shaped art history.

‘Unlock Art’ is a collaboration between Tate and Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts, and offers the culturally curious a stimulating, imaginative and witty introduction to the world of art.

In Unlock Art: Bringing performance art to life - the first film in the series writer, comedian, actor and art enthusiast Frank Skinner explores Performance Art and its origins; from DADA and Surrealism through to Yoko Ono and Joseph Beuys. The film also explores how Performance Art has helped to challenge oppressive regimes, and how it makes us question the way we perceive the world around us.

This is the first of eight films which will be released on a monthly basis. Viewers will be taken on an engaging journey through various art movements and themes, from the history of the nude and humour in art, to Surrealism and Pop – offering the need-to-know facts, and making the arts more accessible to a wider audience.

Unlock Art is part of Le Méridien’s ongoing commitment to provide a new perspective on the hotel experience through a curated approach to culture. Its support of the Outset/Frieze Art Fair Fund to benefit the Tate Collection, which is in its sixth consecutive year, enables Tate to buy work by emerging artists at Frieze.

Film 1: Bringing performance art to life is brought to you by Frank Skinner, and you can see it above. Look out for later films, one of which will be presented by the Twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi.

Daily Dalek Mug Of The Month!

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

We’re giving away a Daily Dalek mug this week with our new feature, Mug of the Month!

Here at Kasterborous Towers, despite the high tech equipment required for writing and running a website of this size, we lead a sedentary lifestyle, with much time spent on the allotment patch growing wonderful new articles for your perusal.

So you can imagine my surprise when a mug tree popped up this week, adorned with delicious fruit from Tone Cartoons.

I’m talking, of course, about the mug you see pictured above, in which Marvin the Paranoid Android bemoans his lot to a baffled Dalek.

This is, of course, a great cartoon from the fantastic web comic The Daily Dalek, which you can follow at www.tonecartoons.co.uk/blog. Artist Tone has given us one of these mugs to share – they don’t really grow on trees, fakt (with a “k”) fans – and you can own one very easily indeed.

To win, simply leave a comment on this post telling us what drink you would enjoy in this mug while watching The Enemy of the World.

You have until midnight on Friday, October 18th, and we’ll be announcing a winner on Saturday.
