Gillan: Matt will always be my Doctor
Danny_Weasel is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Everyone’s favourite red head has openly declared that Matt Smith will always be the Doctor to her. Chatting recently on the promotion trail for her movie Not Another Happy Ending, Karen opined the departure of the Eleventh Doctor.
“It’s weird that he’s leaving, because to me he is the Doctor and he always will be. But I’m biased, I guess!”
Karen, who played companion Amy Pond for two years opposite Matt Smith, also revealed that she has accepted the fact that she is a nerd.
I never ever considered myself a sci fi geek, but the more I talk about it with people I’ve worked with, I think I am!…OK, yes, I’m definitely a nerd!
The former Pond also commented on the casting of Matt’s replacement, Peter Capaldi, saying that she felt the casting was amazing and that Capaldi would bring a very different feel to the Doctor.
A lot of people associate him with Malcolm Tucker who’s very grumpy, but that could work for the Doctor.
The news of Karen’s feelings for her Doctor comes as no real surprise I suppose, we all have a special bond to our first Doctor, for me it’s Sylvester McCoy, for my son it’s David Tennant and my wife has Eccleston. So it will also be true for companions; Fraser Hines and Pat Troughton, Katy Manning and Jon Pertwee.
Their Doctor will always be THE Doctor.
So who is your Doctor? Is your favourite different from your first? Let us know below and share those memories.

Hey, Kasterborous, Where’s My Newsletter?!
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
The observant among you should have noticed that we have a newsletter – which you can sign up to just over there >>>> – which up until very recently went out on a daily-or-so basis.
This was the second generation newsletter, an automated affair that was designed to update our readers with the latest big stories. While it succeeded with this aim to some extent, for some it was too often; for others, too specific (and for others still, nothing to do with the newsletter they thought they’d signed up for, namely something to do with medical practitioners – I kid you not!)
At present, the newsletter isn’t being sent out, but we aim to resolve this state of affairs in the next few days with a transfer to some new software. Once this has been achieved, we’ll then be sending out a single weekly email covering the most vital Doctor Who news of the past 7 days and the most vital articles on Kasterborous. In format, it will be a little more like the original newsletter back in 2011/12.
If you’re one of our newsletter subscribers, a couple of things. Firstly, thank you! Second, lookout for an email that you may need to respond to (via a confirmation link) in order to agree to the new newsletter.
We hope to have the new newsletter sorted out soon – keep your eyes peeled!

Superb, isn’t it? You’ll see the full image as soon as we can bring you a confirmed line up for the Manchester events…

An Adventure in Space and Time Gallery
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
A gallery of five superb new images has been released to promote the forthcoming Doctor Who genesis docudrama, An Adventure in Space and Time, which stars David Bradley (Harry Potter, Dinosaurs on a Spaceship) as William Hartnell.
Here’s the synopsis: images – which feature Bradley, Jessica Raine (Hide), Brian Cox (The End of Time), Jemma Powell and Jamie Glover are courtesy of BBC America.
An Adventure in Space and Time tells the story of the genesis of Doctor Who – which first aired on November 23, 1963 – and the many personalities involved. David Bradley (Game of Thrones, Harry Potter) plays the first ever Doctor, the iconic William Hartnell, in the drama written by Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Doctor Who), who also serves as executive producer alongside Steven Moffat (Doctor Who, Sherlock) and Caroline Skinner (Doctor Who, The Fades). The BBC’s Head of Drama Sydney Newman, credited with the creation of the show, is portrayed by Brian Cox (The Bourne Supremacy, Bourne Identity) and the producer, Verity Lambert, by Jessica Raine (Call the Midwife). The director of the first ever episode “An Unearthly Child,” Waris Hussein, will be played by Sacha Dhawan (History Boys, Last Tango In Halifax).
An Adventure in Space and Time is a co-production between BBC Cymru Wales and BBC AMERICA. The drama, directed by Terry McDonough (Breaking Bad, The Street), will premiere in November 2013 on BBC AMERICA.

The Second Phase of Doctor Who?
Nick Kitchen is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Could Doctor Who be heading off on a new journey for its second 50 years? That’s what silver-tongued Steven Moffat appears to be hinting at in a recent interview.
Speaking with SFX about the upcoming special, The Day of the Doctor, Moffat teased that the Doctor has found his mission:
We’ve got to set the Doctor off in a brand new direction. It’s chapter two of his life. Now something happens to him that changes the way he thinks and the way he will adventure from now on.
You can celebrate an anniversary in many ways – – I think the most productive one within the narrative is to say, ‘This is where the story really starts. This is where he finds his mission, he finds his destiny.’
Let us take time to assess the score, shall we? We already have a huge episode celebrating the 50th Anniversary coming up. Did I mention that David Tennant and Billie Piper are along for the ride? What about the mystery of John Hurt being revealed? And let’s not forget the upcoming Christmas regeneration from Smith to Capaldi. That’s enough to get even the most causal Whovian to become excited. Now, we factor in the importance of the events of the upcoming special: the “Mad Man with a Box” who has travelled all throughout time and space with little thought of where he was headed next will finally have a guiding purpose.
The stakes have always been high for the 50th Anniversary special, and with each passing comment and tease from the “Moff”, they only seem to get higher. Balancing fandom expectations and reigning in new viewers was always going to be a huge challenge; adding the narrative needed to propel Doctor Who’s future, and you have almost unattainable expectations. Can Moffat succeed? Can he deliver on all of these claims and promises in 75 minutes?
And probably most importantly, what is the Doctor’s mission? Share thoughts down below!

Ben Daniels Confirms Doctor Who Approach
Drew Boynton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Ben Daniels has admitted that he was indeed on a shortlist of candidates to play the Twelfth Doctor. In a recent interview he is both amazingly candid and informative–especially for those of us who wonder what goes on behind Doctor Who‘s scenes!
One revelation is that, although Daniels was in the mix of names, it may have been Peter Capaldi’s sonic screwdriver to lose all along:
“…But I also knew from the outset that there was a name ahead of my own on that list that they were very interested in. So after that initial conversation that I had with them, it was just a waiting game.”
Like David Tennant, and now Peter Capaldi, Daniels is a long-time fan and can’t help sounding disappointed that he wasn’t chosen.
“So I was asked (to be in the mix of names), and when I eventually managed to peel myself off the ceiling, I said, ‘Yeah, of course it’d be something I’d be interested in doing,’ and I was hugely excited by it…I was a huge fan of the show as a kid, like we all were really. My era was Jon Pertwee into Tom Baker and then also when it returned, penned thrillingly by the amazing Russell T Davies with Christopher Eccleston. To be thrown into that mix as a possibility was fantastic.”
And that possibility of Daniels being chosen as new Doctor would seem to make perfect sense. He is a charismatic actor (with piercing blue eyes) who has had roles on internationally popular shows such as Law & Order: UK, Merlin, and House of Cards. Reading the article, one can’t help but feel a little bad for him…and wonder what might have been:
“I knew from the outset, from that initial conversation, that they wanted to cast someone older and I just think it’s so great to shake it up. The Who fans are just so incredibly passionate about that show, which I absolutely love. They’re really vocal. The debates they all have about who it should be and why it should be… but I think Peter Capaldi will just be fantastic.”
And although Ben Daniels lost out on becoming Twelve, maybe Thirteen will be his lucky number…?

Doctor Who at the Movies: Now On The Big Screen
jtbelliott is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
This thrilling and exhaustive account of Doctor Who’s troubled relationship with the silver screen is now available to purchase in print and Kindle formats.
Charles Norton’s book Now on the Big Screeen: The Unofficial and Unauthorised Guide to Doctor Who at the Cinema recently gained column inches with the revelation that Michael Jackson was once considered for the role of The Doctor – and the discoveries come in thick and fast from thereon in. Who knew, for instance, that Abominable Snowmen scribe Mervyn Haisman tried taking his Yeti to Disney?
After covering Peter Cushing’s fabulous, Dalek-centric outings from the ’60s, Norton takes us on a journey into the realm of what might have been…
From Tom Baker and Ian Marter’s Doctor Who meets Scratchman to Douglas Adams’ Doctor Who and the Krikkitmen, through to the TV Movie and beyond, Now on the Big Screen takes its readers through stages of intrigue, wonder and relief, as films, ultimately never made, are recreated in Norton’s prose.
In the weeks (!) leading up to The Day of the Doctor’s cinematic release, Now on the Big Screen offers fans the chance to explore an essential, if rarely discussed, aspect of the show’s history.
You can order your copy on Kindle for just £4.77. A print copy is also available with an RRP of £15.99, discounted to £14.79 on Amazon!
