New Sherlock Episode Inspired By Mark Gatiss’ Tube Obsession

Well, that was quite a week wasn’t it? Put aside for one second the fact that we’ve still got two of the biggest episodes of NuWho to look forward to this year, the BBC go and pull the rug out from under our feet and give us two classic Second Doctor stories that we never thought we’d have the pleasure of ever seeing again!

The BFI event on Thursday was an enormous success with Deborah Watling and Fraser Hines on hand to oversee the first viewing of the episode in 45 years, also in attendance was writer and sometimes guest star for Doctor Who, Mark Gatiss.

The excited actor also revealed to Kasterborous’ Gareth Kavanagh that The Web of Fear, one of the stories that were recovered, has inspired his story from the upcoming series of Sherlock:

I am obsessed with the Tube and I think it all comes from that story when I was a kid…the first episode of Sherlock is explicitly about the London Underground for exactly that reason – because I love ‘The Web of Fear’!

The Web of Fear takes place in the gloomy tunnels of the London Underground and finds the Second Doctor and his friends up against the Great Intelligence, who presumably laid out this careful plan thanks to events from 2012’s The Snowmen.

Quite how Gatiss’s episode will compare is anyone’s guess but it’s good to know that he’s injecting some Doctor Who flavour into his other series!

You can hear more from the Mark Gatiss as well as Frazer Hines, Deborah Watling and many others at the missing episodes event in this week’s podKast, available soon.
