Fandom Melts: Janet Fielding/Peter Capaldi Photographed

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

They say a picture tells a thousand stories; this one perhaps initiated a thousand fangasms. On Monday afternoon former Doctor Who companion Janet Fielding tweeted this surprising photo of herself with new star Peter Capaldi.

Naturally, fandom has begun speculating on a return for the Tegan Jovanka actress, last seen exiting the TARDIS in sour circumstances in 1984′s Resurrection of the Daleks (many Big Finish appearances since notwithstanding).

https://twitter.com/jfmouthonlegs/sta...

Describing her as the “mouth on legs”, Fielding nevertheless remained on the show for an immense 3 years, 1 month following her introduction in Logopolis, becoming the second longest-running companion in terms of continuous time (second to Frazer Hines’ Jame McCrimmon, and of course Nicholas Courtney and Lis Sladen’s semi-recurring appearances over the years).

So: is a return for Tegan on the cards?

(With thanks to Daren)

Jago & Litefoot Series Seven Trailer

Nick Kitchen is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

The “Investigators of Infernal Incidents” are back! Big Finish has just announced the April release of Jago and Litefoot: Series Seven Box Set and an exciting new trailer to whet your appetites!

The set features four new adventures with the pair that first made their appearance in the Fourth Doctor classic, The Talons of Weng-Chiang, including a three parter (The Monstrous Menagarie, The Night of 1000 Stars, and Murder at Moorsey Manor) that finds Jago and Litefoot framed and on the run for a crime they didn’t commit. Will reuniting with Leela (Louise Jameson) and teaming with famous author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, be enough to clear their names?

The fourth adventure (The Wax Princess) sees the pair go head to head with the famous criminal, Jack the Ripper, and “drawn into a web of intrigue” that may go as high as the palace. The new series is due out in April, but you can secure your copy via pre-order now.

What say you? Is a trip to Baker Street and the return of Jack the Ripper enough to sell you on a new set of adventures with Jago and Litefoot? Or is there a different upcoming Big Finish you’ve got your eye and wallet on? Let us know below!

Stephen Grosz Book Inspired by Doctor Who

Drew Boynton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Author Stephen Grosz, whose The Examined Life was one of the best-selling non-fiction books of 2013, is using Doctor Who as an inspiration of sorts for his next book.  (And no, he’s not suddenly jumping into the science-fiction fantasy arena!)  The American psychoanalyst, who lives and works in the UK, has written a new book – also non-fiction – called Seven Obstacles of Love, which was partly inspired by his young daughter’s love of the Doctor, in particular, Matt Smith…

You see, she’s none-too-happy with the newer, older Doctor who is taking his place:

“I was very glad that he (Twelfth Doctor actor Peter Capaldi) was taking over the role but my daughter was upset. I realised that she had a crush on the last Doctor Who, Matt Smith, and I thought, ‘Oh my god, she is having feelings. I’m going to have to write this down.’”

When he saw that his 11-year old daughter felt this way, he realized this was an opportunity to explore people’s feelings toward others.  In particular, how people directly relate to others, including “attachment, intimacy and what makes people lovable”.

As Doctor Who fans, we are all used to change.  It’s easy to forget that younger and newer fans may not be.  And for some young fans, a change from a flappy-handed Mr. Smith to a possibly quite grumpy Mr. Capaldi might be scary enough for them not to like the new Doctor, and possibly even not to continue to watch the show.  But, as we all know, change will happen again; it’s just a matter of time.

Kasterborites, do you think your therapist would say that you have an attachment – healthy, or otherwise – to any certain Doctor Who character?  And would it do any good to seek treatment?

(Thanks to The Independent.)

Doctor Who Lego Goes Into Review Stage!

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Now everything really is awesome!

With the ban lifted on Doctor Who submissions LEGO CUUSOO has been inundated with ideas by fans wishing to see beloved characters, props and scenes rendered in glorious, blocky detail. LEGO CUUSOO is an initiative by the company where potential Master Builders can submit homemade designs, have supporters vote on them and, if they are lucky enough to drum up 10,000 supporters, their hard work is rewarded by having LEGO consider them for mass production every quarter – with one percent of the revenue generated by sales going back to the designer.

And the really cool thing is – the immediate leading project, Doctor Who, designed by GlenBricker, has achieved its goal of 10,000 supporters and is now going into review! The set looks to include 5-7 Minifigures, K-9, and 3 Brick Build Daleks – with a poll to see which figures fans want to see in an initial pitch to LEGO having just concluded with the majority of votes going to NuWho characters including the Ninth, Tenth and Eleven Doctors, Rose Tyler, Amy Pond and Captain Jack Harkness.

So what’s next? LEGO said:

We’re looking forward to considering this project in the LEGO Review, but for now excuse us while we go make an electroshock device … just in case this really IS a Nestene plot to take over the world via a toy factory! We now officially advance this project to the Review phase.

What happens now?

This project moves from the Idea stage to the Review stage. A “LEGO Review Board” composed of designers, product managers, and other key team members will examine the idea. We’ll build concept models and determine if the concept meets our high standards for what it takes to be a LEGO product. This includes factors such as playability, safety, and fit with the LEGO brand. Every potential LEGO product goes through a process like this and must meet the same standards.

This project qualifies for the Second 2014 Review beginning in May and ending in September.

The review is a thorough process and from its start, and can take several months. When finished, we make a “go/no go” decision to develop and sell a product based on the Doctor Who concept.

When the review is complete, we will inform you of our decision. If green-lit, this project goes into the longest phase of the project; the Development phase. During this time, LEGO model designers refine the product and develop it for release, we create the product materials (box, instructions, marketing), and get everything ready for a production run. This also takes several months.”

Sounds very promising – everyone keep their finger’s crossed. Even you. Yeah, you at the back, with the tentacles.

Also vying for review status is Doctor Who and Companions, designed by Andrew Clarke, which has received over 1,700 supporters.

TARDIS LEGO

His 500 piece set includes a fabulous interior and exterior TARDIS set – which is probably the best TARDIS design of all the submissions – two Doctors (one classic and one from nuWho although, if you have a preference for which you would like to see with a yellow head, drop Andrew a direct message!) two companions, K9 and a Dalek.

Other Doctor Who projects to land on CUUSOO include ones based on Doctor Who Vs The Daleks (also by Andrew Clarke), a set featuring Minifigures from throughout the entire series and one based on the Ninth and Tenth Doctor’s TARDIS console room (which you can see above).

New Doctor Who Added To Netflix UK!

Jonathan Appleton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Netflix subscribers in the UK can now enjoy all of the first six series of new Doctor Who with the addition of Matt Smith’s second run of episodes.

Series 6 forms part of a new batch of BBC material available on the subscription service, with the first two series of Sherlock also now available to view for subscribers in the UK and Ireland.

Originally aired in two batches in 2011, the series commenced with the shocking events at Lake Silencio in The Impossible Astronaut and went on to explore Amy’s pregnancy, River’s parentage and how the Doctor managed to (spoiler alert) cheat death.

Netflix are notoriously guarded about revealing information on their subscriber numbers, but if word of mouth in pubs I go in is anything to go by (admittedly not the most rigorous form of polling) it does seem to be attracting an expanding customer base with a good line up of shows available, plus exclusives such as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. Head to www.netflix.co.uk to sample the goods.

What do you think? Are you less inclined to bother buying box sets now in this era of streaming?

Broadchurch: The Novel!

Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Broadchurch, the acclaimed ITV drama starring Tenth Doctor David Tennant, will be adapted as a novel later this year.

Released on 14th August, the book is written by The Poison Tree‘s Erin Kelly, based on the 8-part series written by Chris Chibnall and shown last year. Broadchurch garnered incredible reviews and lots of media interest, leading to a further version being filmed for US television, also starring Tennant. The official synopsis reads:

Containing new twists, never-before-seen material and adding great depth and insights to the unforgettable cast of characters, this is a must-read not only for everyone who loved the TV programme ahead of the second series but for all fans of evocative, atmospheric crime drama.

Chibnall first wrote for Doctor Who in 2007, giving us the frantic 42, but it wasn’t until 2010 that he was invited back to rejig the Silurians for The Hungry Earth/ Cold Blood. Since then he has also scripted Dinosaurs on a Spaceship and The Power of Three, the latter of which especially celebrated Amy and Rory Williams (or Pond) and their lives on the TARDIS. Arthur Darvill also starred in Broadchurch alongside The Eleventh Hour actress, Olivia Colman.

The novel seems to be a great way of re-establishing the crime drama into the nation’s minds – so could this mean we’ll be getting Series 2 at the tail-end of this year…?

Pre-order Broadchurch: The Official Novel from Amazon UK for £7.99 today!
