The Eighth Doctor in the TARDIS – Hold On, WHAT?

Drew Boynton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Paul McGann has once again set the hearts of fans aflutter–and not just in his usual way.

The actor recently posted a picture on his Twitter account that took everyone by surprise:  a bird’s-eye view of none other than the Eighth Doctor in the control room Eleventh Doctor’s TARDIS.  The image shows McGann in his The Night of the Doctor costume with his arms outstretched, and standing near the dimly lit console that used to be Matt Smith’s.  It’s a happy-face moment and a sad-face moment at the same time!

This is my moment…! pic.twitter.com/42J9ep6WVP

— Paul McGann (@pauljmcgann) March 10, 2014

Now, before the “McGann is in series eight!” rumours start, the photo was almost certainly taken last year during the filming of The Night of the Doctor.  McGann probably shuttled over to the TARDIS set during a break in filming and had the photo snapped.

Having said that, the enduringly popular actor was apparently in Cardiff recently…

A privilege to spend St David's day in Cardiff with such a friendly, funny crowd of revellers. Thanks to you all. X

— Paul McGann (@pauljmcgann) March 1, 2014

No word on whether Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy can be spotted sneaking around in the shadows somewhere behind him.

Kasterborites, do you think we’ll ever see the Eighth Doctor onscreen in a proper upcoming episode–this time outstretching his arms to hug the Twelfth Doctor, perhaps?

(Thanks to Daren, additional facts from Life, Doctor Who & Combom.)

Back This Student-Produced Doctor Who Spin-Off Film!

Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

The great thing about the fan community is its enthusiasm and willingness to help other fans achieve their goals. Naturally, the crowd-funding website, Kickstarter, is perfect for this.

Cardiff’s Coryton Primary School and the University of South Wales are obviously hugely influenced by the good Doctor and are working on a short film called Another Day, Another Dimension - but they need your help with the cost of transport, location shoots, sets, costumes and marketing.

All you have to do is pledge anything from £1 to £21, and aside from the knowledge that you’ll be aiding an educational project for dedicated, hard-working youngsters, you’ll also be rewarded with various tier gifts including mugs, t-shirts and posters.

Here’s the synopsis for Another Day, Another Dimension:

The film follows the regeneration of FOUR DOCTORS across TWO MINI EPISODES through time and space as they encounter all kinds of out-of-this-world troubles along the way! In an attempt to solve them, they – along with their trusty companions – are ultimately thrown into the Victorian era. The Doctor battles the likes of terrifying coal monsters and vanishing children before venturing on – another day, another dimension!

They’re also keen to stress that the project is “an educational project. The hard work, effort and time being put into the production by all the students involved directly effects their education and grades. For all those involved from USW, this project is a chance to work professionally to create an industry-standard motion picture. For the students of Coryton Primary, this a project is spanning across the entire curriculum.”

Of course, Kickstarter isn’t the only way you can support them. Head over to their Facebook page to purchase either a digital or hard copy of their soundtrack!

And who knows: the project might just inspire some of them to get involved in the TV industry. There might be a future Steven Moffat, Nick Hurran or Brian Minchin in their midst…

Celebrate the Radiophonic Workshop!

James Lomond is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Members of the legendary Radiophonic Workship are congregating for a one-off celebration of their pioneering department on Friday 11th April.

The one day event, “In Concert and Conversation – The Radiophonic Worship” takes place from 10:00 at the University of Chichester and tickets can be booked online for the hearty sum of £65. Only fifty tickets had been made available at the time of writing and will likely get snapped up fast…

Renowned media experts and seminal electronic musicians – to be announced shortly – will be joining original BBC Radiophonic Workshop members Peter Howell, Roger Limb, Dr Dick Mills and Paddy Kingsland, as well as archivist Mark Ayres, to honour and assess the Workshop’s half century odyssey into electronica.

Created in 1958, the Radiphonic is historically one of the key influences in the birth and evolution of electronica – Orbital being among mainstream artists who cite members such as Delia Derbyshire as a source of inspiration. The Workshop produced audio atmosphere and sound effects for series such as Quatermass and comedy noises for Spike Milligan’s genius radio series, The Goon Show. As readers are probably aware they produced much of the effects and music for Doctor Who, most notably the sound of the TARDIS de/materialising and Derbyshire’s haunting arrangement of Ron Grainer’s opening theme.

Unique for combining technical expertise with artistic creativity, the group’s work was gradually outsourced until they were sadly closed down in 1998. They have however made an online revival since 2012 and very rarely re-group for live performances.

The event culminates in a rare live performance from the surviving members of the Workshop. Check out more details and book online at www.radiophonicworkshop2014.co.uk.

And if  you need any convincing on the importance of the Radiophonic Workshop to Doctor Who, have a listen to this – it purports to be the first time that Ron Grainer arranged the theme he composed. You’ll note that it’s a VERY different approach to Derbyshire’s familiar version. What a narrow escape we had!

Tickled Pink by New [SPOILER] Rumours

Alex Skerratt is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Oh my dear Whovians, you have been naïve…! (Sort of. This article may contain spoilers, however, it is based purely on conjecture and speculation.)

As the worst-kept secret in the Whoniverse continues to spread like a black cloud of entropy, speculation is rife as to the identity of the actor who will play the Master in the new series of Doctor Who. Names such as Benedict Cumberbatch and Charles Dance have all been thrown into the ring, with the Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy claiming to know the identity of the rogue Time Lord from Gallifrey… and claiming he’ll be very, very scary.

Possibly a spoiler, possibly nonsense

And yesterday, comics and general cool stuff news site Bleeding Cool claimed to have been told who the new Master was going to be, the information having been leaked by an ”acting source.” Hold on to your TCEs – it’s only Sam Anderson, recently revealed as Series 8′s new recurring character Danny Pink!

If true, it’s a logical casting decision. After all, there has been considerable speculation over the last few years as to whether we’ll ever be getting a black Doctor; maybe Steven Moffat has gone the other way and cast a black Master instead! It’s certainly possible. In fact one Twitter user has already pointed out that Daniel Pink is an anagram of Pain Linked, and we at Kasterborous can exclusively reveal that it’s also an anagram of Deli Napkin, so the conspiracy theories are coming thick and fast…

Until we hear any official confirmation, we’ll have to go on speculating. What do you think – would Sam Anderson make a good Master?

Please note that the following comments may contain spoilers.

Can You Name Hanley’s Infinite Doctors?

James Lomond is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Paul Hanley’s epic tableaux have delighted the online image-hungry fanbase for a while and his latest offering is a visual and canonical feast for the eyes (and list-makers among us…).

Deviant Art hosts online artists’ public portfolios and is a great place to go searching for random Doctor Who characters and monsters to see what the Worldwide Zeitgeist has come up with (“TARDIS console” and “cyberpony” are two of my favourites). Hanley’s previous images of the the Doctor’s eleven incarnations, friend and enemies have been very popular – this homage to the TARDIS even found favour with Neil Gaiman with it’s nod to “Sexy” from his episode The Doctor’s Wife.

His latest offering is rampant with continuity-threatening alternative and never-were versions of the Doctor. Peter Capaldi, as the Twelfth Doctor is flanked by all the television incarnations and then an array from comedy spoofs, audio adventures, an aborted cartoon and even stage plays including an alternative version of the Fourth Doctor played by Trevor Martin.

I could be wrong, but I think former Cyberleader, David Banks, may make an appearance from being Jon Pertwee’s understudy in the Ultimate Adventure stage adventure. It’s either that or another McGann brother’s take on the Time Lord from an audition tape (!). Take a look and let’s see if we can go one better than Geek Speak and LIST THEM ALL!! I’m particularly curious about the chap with the severe face and flat black hat at the top left. I have faith in you, Kasterborites!

If you’d like to hear more from Hanley, pick up Kasterborous Magazine #1, where the talented illustrator is interviewed in-depth.

Audio Adventures By The Fans For The Fans

James Lomond is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

It has been brought to Kasterborous’ attention that Messrs Simon Sayers Franklin (good name) and Mark Percy (good too) are in the business of producing non-profit, totally *unofficial* Doctor Who audio adventures in the by-fans-for-fans mould…

What, what?! But surely this is what Big Finish are for? Yes indeed – but as groupie Paul Hull notes on their Facebook page:

“The wonderful thing about WHO is that it allows & embraces all these wonderful projects that are part of the WHO universe. Tis a very positive thing.”

Well said, Paul! It doesn’t look like Simon or Mark have any demos up on their page yet though here is the synopsis for the imminent first installment: The Curse of the Crying Boy:

“Sophie Stevens’ life is torn apart by a sudden explosion at her home which kills her family and leaves her homeless. Everything is turned to dust and ash except for one thing – the painting of a Crying Boy which still hangs above the fireplace… but it’s not just her house. At least fifty other houses across the country set on fire at the same time on the same night, leaving nothing behind but an untouched painting of the Crying Boy amid the ruins. Can Sophie and the Doctor discover the truth behind the Curse of the Crying Boy by unravelling the tragic story behind the painting?”

I don’t know about you but I’m surprised by how engrossing and Doctor Whoey that sounds! If this is any guide to the quality of their work it’ll be well worth a listen. They have excellent fan credentials with photo-ops taken with top Who-stars Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and mysterious new companion Samuel Anderson. (They appear to be a handsome pair too. Juss sayin’).

Cunningly their premise seems to have used a pre-existing urban legend; a slightly darker riff on the mythical monster = alien menace formula perhaps? Unless I’ve been totally taken in by well-placed web hype – check out out The Fortean Times.

(With thanks to Seb)

Karen Gillan Stars In New Trailer For Horror Movie Oculus

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

If you’re a fan of Karen Gillan and her steadily increasing number of movie roles, you might like to check out this chilling trailer from forthcoming horror flick Oculus, released on 13 June in the UK.

In Oculus, Gillan plays Kaylie Russell, while Brenton Thwaites plays her brother, Tim. Their parents were apparently murdered many years before, and Kaylie (complete with American accent) is determined to find out how. Her main suspect is an ornate vintage mirror…

Be aware that this is an R rated film, so please don’t view the trailer if you’re easily disturbed or under 18.

Any plans to see Oculus, or will you be waiting for it to hit DVD/Blu-ray/Netflix?
