Watch Jenna Coleman & Samuel Anderson Together Before Doctor Who Returns

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

They’re colleagues at Coal Hill School in Doctor Who Series 8 – but Jenna Coleman and Samuel Anderson have appeared on TV together before, on ITV soap Emmerdale.

In the bizarre “sex and no farming” countryside soap, Coleman played Jasmine Thomas and while Anderson was Ross Kirk. You can see them together in the clip above (along with Sheffield actor Paul McEwan), and although we don’t really think it tells us much about Clara Oswald and Danny Pink’s relationship, it’s still nice to see them together in advance of Doctor Who returning.

Don’t Miss This Amazing “The Day of Doctor Who” Collection!

Jonathan Appleton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Long term fans can now relive their memories of our favourite show’s fifth anniversary special thanks to a truly irresistible set of souvenirs now available to buy online.

What’s that you say? “Fifth anniversary special?! Oh no, Kasterborous has finally lost it…”

I’m talking, of course, about the long lost ‘The Day of Doctor Who’ which brought together the original three Doctors William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Peter Cushing and was transmitted in November 1968 but since lost without trace.

Colin Brockhurst, designer of that excellent love letter to Doctor Who comics Vworp Vworp! has collated the remaining evidence of this, the ultimate missing episode which we can guarantee will never turn up in Nigeria or anywhere else for that matter, ever.

Alternative Doctor Who anniversary celebrations

You’ll have gathered by now that something trans-dimensional is going on here but this quirky collection, which includes an ‘imaginary’ Radio Times cover for November 23-29 and ‘signed’ BBC picture of Peter Cushing, has to be the most original bit of Who merchandise in many a year.

Difficult to pick a highlight of this genuinely brilliant treasure trove but the fake telesnaps, complete with reproduction John Cura envelope, will have you pining for this episode that never was. It seems that there’s an alternate reality where the First Doctor flirted with Queen Elizabeth I, the Second Doctor met not one but two Colonel Lethbridge-Stewarts, and the original ‘War Doctor’ came to their aid to face the dreaded Daleks and Chameleons.

The Day of Doctor Who Collection is available for £19.99 plus postage. Please don’t miss it!

Tennant Lends Voice to Upcoming Xbox One Game

Nick Kitchen is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

When Kinect Sports Rivals launches next month on the Xbox One, Whovian gamers may encounter a voice they’ll find altogether familiar. That’s right! Providing narration and commentary is none other than former Tenth Doctor, David Tennant!

In his first ever voice role in a video game, Tennant will guide gamers as the next generation Kinect camera system scans a high definition image of the user’s likeness and then drops them into motion tracked sporting events — think Wii Sports, but hyper-realistic and no need for a controller. The game has been hyped as the one to silence the One’s critics.

While I haven’t obtained a Xbox One yet, this certainly looks like a good time (if casual gaming is your thing). Kinect Sports Rivals releases in April.

Dear readers, will 10′s involvement make Kinect Sports Rivals a must have for you or motive to upgrade to an Xbox One? Or are you holding out for something more substantial?

(Writer’s note: I, for one, am solely hoping that Lego moves forward with Doctor Who so that we can eventually get a Lego Doctor Who video game. Now, an Xbox One Lego Doctor Who game would make me pull the trigger on a system upgrade without hesitation. That may just be me, though. As you were!)

(Via EVERYONE, apparently…)

New Police Box To Go Into Service In Dorset

James Lomond is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Boscombe, Dorset will soon be following in the footsteps of Earl’s Court tube station with its very own *functioning* blue Police Box (in a police, telephone, maybe CCTV sorta way rather than the trans-temporal transport sense) set up to increase the ‘police presence’…

BBC News notes that Doctor Who fans are taking an interest (they also note that bears favour toileting facilities in wooded areas),

Doctor Who fans are getting excited about a Tardis-style police box due to open this Spring in Boscombe, Dorset. The idea is for a more visible police presence to tackle crime, but a TV show fan site said the box’s “celebrity status” would outweigh that service. …Doctor Who Online editor Sebastian Brook, who used to live in Bournemouth, said it was “the visual image of the police box that connected several generations” of fans.

Well Brook isn’t wrong – there is that special tingle that seeing any blue rectangle with possible pannelling gives you as a proper fan of the BEST show ever. And it’s always good to have more cool stuff around the place, for sure. But what I want to know is- in the words of the Fourth Doctor, have they the right?… The BBC won a legal battle back in 2002 for ownership of the Police Box image.

Is this part of a surreptitious plan on the part of the Metropolitan Police to get the copyright to the Police Box image of the TARDIS back by stealth? Or is there a distinction to be made between *image* and the physical object? Anyone?…

Also my visual circuits are in sceptical mode, Kasterborites – it looks a little too squat don’t you think? And have they got the door panels right…?

A Different [Time] Ring?

Rebecca Crockett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Something concerning the Twelfth Doctor’s costume has also been noticed as possibly being significant – a change in his ring.

It’s well known that Peter Capaldi most always wears the wedding ring he exchanged with his wife some 23 years ago even if the character he’s playing isn’t married. Fans noted back when filming began in January that he was wearing what seemed to be that same ring, a plain gold band.

But recent images show Capaldi is wearing a second ring, described as having a green stone. Whatever the significance of the ring is, we don’t think it’s compatible with a chameleon arch.

Now to this writer there also seems to be some kind of symbol or something surrounding the stone. I wonder if this will be something that we will get an explanation for or if it will be a detail whose significance will be left a mystery, one that will be left to fans to speculate about.

Given that the good Doctor is technically not married (remember, time was reset with a kiss after the “marriage” to River back in Series 6) what could this be?

Defend Arcadia with Sci-fi & Fantasy Modeller #33!

Danny_Weasel is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

If, like me, you’re the kind of person who loves to know the ins and outs of the special effects side of things then you may want to get your hands on this month’s issue of Sci-fi & Fantasy Modeller, as it contains what looks to be a rather impressive look behind the scenes of the miniatures used in the 50th anniversary episode The Day of the Doctor.

The special anniversary episode used a wonderful mix of old school miniature effects and up to date CGI and merged the two together so well that there were times even my well trained eye was stumped as to which was which. Turns out  from reading Sci-fi & Fantasy Modeller most of the Time War sequences set on Arcadia were miniatures.

The article looks at the genesis of the project, how they came to be involved (due to their sterling work with the submarine in Series 7 episode Cold War) and how they would face the challenge of shooting high speed miniature sequences in 3D.

Personally I love that for the 50th year the show is still using the tried and tested (and sometimes better looking) miniature effects, and hope that this article will spark more interest in the field and bring it back to more common usage over the CG alternative. You can pre-order your copy of issue 33 of Sci-Fi & Fantasy Modeller today from Forbidden Planet.

What are your feelings on this subject? Are miniatures still the number one effects choice for you, or do you see it as a remnant from the past that should be left there in favour of new techniques? As always our comments section is there for you to fill up people.

(With thanks to Phil)

Capaldi “Accident” Turns Out To Be A Spoiler!

Rebecca Crockett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

There are a few bits of filming news we have for you today. BEWARE!! There may or may not be potential spoilers ahead!

Capaldi injured?

We’ve already shown you a few photos in recent days of the cast of Doctor Who filming in and around the Cardiff University campus for the upcoming 8th series of the popular show.

Recently, eagle-eyed fans noted that Who star Peter Capaldi had apparently been sporting a minor head wound, seemingly suffered while filming a scene where he is in a tree.

Yet both Capaldi and costar Jenna Coleman were seemingly all smiles on set!

So what happened?

According to a spokesperson for the production, the wound Mr. Capaldi was seen sporting was in fact a bit of trickery and makeup related to the scene they were filming.

The source told MailOnline that ’No injury was suffered, it’s just make-up and part of an upcoming storyline.’

Hmm…wonder what the dear Doctor will be up to that would get him injured?!

RIP Comics Legend Steve Moore, 1949-2014

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

The Doctor Who comics community has come together to praise the life and work of the extraordinary writer, contributor and editor, Steve Moore, who passed away at the weekend.

Moore, a knowledgeable, humorous writer with a warmth that pervaded all of his work, was a long-standing editor and contributor to The Fortean Times magazine from the beginning, as well as the creator of 2000AD‘s Future Shocks, of Red Fang and Valkyries, of Lazer Erazer and Axel Pressbutton, a contributor to Warrior Magazine, 2000AD, Doctor Who Magazine and so much more.

He was also the subject of Alan Moore’s novella, gallery and album, Unearthing; and was cited by the Watchman creator as being a principal creative influence since they first became friends during childhood.

Writer and former editor of 2000AD Andy Diggle, took to Twitter to pay respects to Moore’s legacy and his generosity:

Steve Moore’s LASER ERASER & PRESSBUTTON was one of the comics that put me on the path, and he was generous with advice on writing. #RIP

— Andy Diggle (@andydiggle) March 19, 2014

DWM also doffed their caps and acknowledged his ground breaking work for the magazine:

Doctor Who Magazine is sad to hear of the death of Steve Moore; a brilliant writer and contributor to the DWM comic strip in its early days.

— Doctor Who Magazine (@DWMtweets) March 19, 2014

While Al Kennedy, co-host of Comics podcast House to Astonish, summed up just how important Moore’s standing was with anyone who picked up a copy of DWM or 2000AD during their formative years:

If you ever enjoyed Future Shocks in 2000AD, you can thank Steve Moore, who came up with the idea. RIP.

— Al Kennedy (@housetoastonish) March 19, 2014

At the time of his passing, Moore was working on the Bumper Book of Magic with Alan Moore for Top Shelf and Knockabout.

His influence on Doctor Who was considerable, having created Kroton the Cyberman and Dalek Killer Abslom Daak, and written some major strips including Dragon’s Claw.

Kasterborous would like to extend our condolences to his family, friends and those influenced by his work at this difficult time.

(With thanks to Gareth | Additional information from Bleeding Cool)
