Iris Wildthyme and Jo Grant Together!

Danny_Weasel is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Big Finish have released the covers for a couple of their upcoming titles and one in particular looks rather fascinating, The Elixir of Doom (fantastic title by the way) stars Katy Manning as Jo Grant and Katy Manning as Iris Wildthyme and is written by Wildthyme creator Paul Magrs.

For those of you not in the Big Finish loop, and by now that really should be a minority who should know better, Iris Wildthyme is a Time Lord who has had dealings with the Doctor in the past (see – or should that be “hear”? – the Excelis saga) she is rather like that mad, drunk aunt you find at most weddings; in fact, knowing Iris she probably is that mad aunt at every wedding. Oh, and she has a TARDIS that looks like a red double-decker bus (the No. 22 to Putney Common) and travels with a talking 10-inch-tall sentient, stuffed panda called Panda.

The setting, golden age Hollywood,  looks like it could be a lot of fun with the addition of all the classic universal monsters (as seen on the rather impressive cover art) as well as seeing Katy interact with, well, herself I suppose. The pairing of Jo and Iris together is pure genius so it makes sense that it should have happened before – in 2010′s Companion Chronicles installment Find and Replace.

If you head over to Big Finish’s website you can pre-order it and check out the trailer, but remember to come back here and let us know what you think about it. Does the idea of Jo and Iris meeting up fill you with joy or dread? Could it be the start of a beautiful partnership? Let us know in the usual way below.

Tom Riley Cast In Mark Gatiss’ Doctor Who Series 8 Episode

Jonathan Appleton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Casting news for Doctor Who Series 8 continues to emerge, with confirmation today that Tom Riley will appear in the forthcoming run of episodes.

The story, scripted by Mark Gatiss, is scheduled to be the third in Peter Capaldi’s first season as the Doctor.

Tom Riley has come to prominence recently playing Leonardo in Da Vinci’s Demons, the second series of which is about to appear on Fox in the UK. This series has some high level Who connections, with Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner in charge as Executive Producers.

Riley has previously appeared in hit detective drama Lewis and Olympic Games send up Twenty Twelve. Other credits include ITV’s Monroe and the film St Trinian’s II: The Legend of Fitton’s Gold, alongside Tenth Doctor David Tennant.

Paul Murphy is on directing duties for this episode, with recording now underway as part of block three, where a second episode will be written by Gareth Roberts.

Simon Fisher-Becker’s One-Man Show: My Dalek Has A Puncture

Rebecca Crockett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Being such a large production, Doctor Who requires scores of actors to fill small and large parts in every episode. Sometimes those characters that start out as minor parts become something more, becoming fan favorites even if they don’t have much screen time.

Many appear only in one episode, but they play a pivotal role, advancing the story or being the heart of the episode. Others are fortunate enough to have their roles span more than one episode, some more than one series in the life of the show.

Simon Fisher-Becker is one such actor, well-known to Doctor Who fans as the robust Dorium Maldovar, the black market seller who famously procured the vortex manipulator for River Song “fresh off the wrist of a handsome Time Agent” and who warned the Doctor about his future and Trenzalore.

Along with his other numerous television and film roles, Fisher-Becker also has a one-man stage show called “My Dalek Has A Puncture,” where he talks about his years in the acting business as well as his role on Doctor Who.

This Friday, 4th April, Fisher-Becker will be staging his one-man show at the Gordon Craig Theatre at the  Stevenage Arts & Leisure Centre at 730pm. The show is open to all ages, but carries a parental guidance warning for mild adult themes occasional expletives.

For more information about tickets and directions to the theatre, please see the Gordon Craig Theatre website.

The show will also be held Saturday, 26th April, at the Misty Moon Gallery, Ladywell, Lewisham. See the Misty Moon website for show information!

Not The Best April Fool Ever… [UPDATE]

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Marco…Polo…Marco…wait where’s it gone? More to the point, where has it been?

Eagle-eyed Doctor Who fans yesterday spotted something that dear reader, we hoped was a sign that the legendary lost First Doctor serial Marco Polo has been found. Indeed, we originally posted a completely different article.

Was Marco Polo listed on DVD at the BBC Shop?

Sadly, despite boasting a brand new commentary track recorded by William Russell, Carole Ann Ford, Mark Eden and Director Waris Hussein and a documentary on the men who made the discovery of what is regarded as the ‘holy grail’ of missing Doctor Who episodes, we’ve been informed that it was – as we suggested at the close of the original article.

Indeed, we’ve also been reliably informed that Waris Hussein has not recorded any commentary for this release.

It seems instead that this was perhaps the most ill-judged Doctor Who April Fool yet, apparently perpetrated by another website. We continue to ponder, largely bewildered, what exactly possessed them to run this story.

We should also add that the story was scheduled to run here on Kasterborous at 4.46am to cater to our massive US audience. If you’ve stumbled across it in the UK and taken it as gospel on non-April Fools Day then you have our sincere apologies.

(With thanks to Paul Gee, Gareth Kavanagh)

Get Your Script Seen by Doctor Who Producer!

Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Fancy your work being judged by Nikki Wilson, producer of Doctor Who Series 8? Well, you’re in luck.

The Screenwriting Goldmine Awards is looking for new, talented screenwriters to impress a host of 24 industry professionals on the judging panel – but you’ve got to be fast because the absolute latest submission date is Thursday 8th May. In fact, the standard deadline has already passed. It does cost, but it may just be worth it; the awards give you potential access to some very influential people in the TV biz. Aside from cash prizes, some will also win the chance to have meetings with a range of people, including Roberto Troni, commissioning editor for Channel 4 Drama; Literary agent for Sayle Screen, Matthew Bates; and producer, Steve Matthews. If you’re in the top 5 finalists, you get to pick whichever person you think will help most with your writing.

The finalists will be announced across September and October, and the overall winner on 30th October.

Basically, you have to send them 45-120 pages of script, pay a fee, and twiddle your thumbs for a bit. Well, okay, so there are more rules than that, but they’re obvious ones, like: don’t rewrite Dickens, it’s got to be written in English (no translations), and you’ve got to be over 18.

It’s a very cool opportunity, folks.

Phil Gladwin, organiser and writer of The Sarah Jane Adventures’ Warriors of Kudlak, says:

“It’s a pretty exciting prospect to consider that each of these judges is guaranteed to read every single one of the short-listed scripts. Trust me, that’s the sort of access to pure power that can change your life.”

Find out more at the awards’ official site. Oh, and good luck!

Doctor Who Sites Produce A Great April Fool’s Day!

Alex Skerratt is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

While some of us may have been holding out for a Frobisher the Penguin spin-off series, or even a redesigned Kamelion for Series 8, the internet found other amusing ways to be inventive this April Fool’s Day!

Fans who had forgotten to check their calendars were shocked to learn that Time Lord Peter Capaldi had been cast in an entirely new role! In a ‘statement’ which appeared on DoctorWhoTV.co.uk, sources reported:

In one of the most surprising plot twists in Doctor Who history Capaldi is not actually the Doctor. Fans will learn in Series 8 that he will instead be playing the latest incarnation of the Doctor’s arch-nemesis, the Master. Capaldi’s Master has in fact just assumed the Doctor’s identity, fooling everyone around him including Clara.

This was a potential setback for actor Arthur Darvill who, according to another site, had already filmed some of his first scenes in his new role as the Master, (thanks to some rather impressive Photoshop trickery.)

In a fake interview that very likely never happened, Arthur Darvill said:

It’s amazing to be back on Doctor Who. It’s different though, Jenna and Peter have been just phenomenal and the Master’s such a different role from Rory.

Finally, feline-focused Kasterborites might have stumbled upon our own ‘exclusive’ news story – the arrival of the Twelfth Doctor’s new cyborg cat known as “Fuzz-E”, (to be portrayed by Peter Catapaldi, naturally.) Our sources claimed that he was due to debut in the upcoming New Year’s special, tentatively titled “The Night of the Animal Doctor”, in which our furry friend would save the Time Lord’s life after he mistakenly landed the TARDIS on Earth during April Fool’s Day.

In short, today has been nothing but “a farrago of distortion which would have had Ananias, Baron Munchausen and every other famous liar blushing down to their toenails!”

It’s been fun, though!

Matt Smith and Karen Gillan Witness Marriage Proposal In Photo Op!

Nick Kitchen is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

A marriage proposal is likely something every couple will never forget. It usually takes loads of planning and creativity to create the perfect moment. However, having the Doctor and one of his companions on hand never hurts either!

Seizing the golden moment, a rare joint photo op with Matt Smith (the Eleventh Doctor) and Karen Gillan (Amy Pond) at Louisville, Ky’s Wizard World, an adventurous Whovian brandishes a ring and pops the question! In addition to getting the answer he was hoping for (she said yes!), the couple also briefly celebrated with the genuinely happy Smith and Gillan in the form of a group hug. Another sterling example of grace and warmth from two of the most popular performers from the long running show.

You can witness the moment for yourself by clicking the video at the top. Congratulations to the couple and kudos to the young man for taking the risk and seizing a once in a lifetime opportunity. If only some one would create and press some “Gallifrey is for Lovers” t-shirts for moments like this…

Has McGann Worked With Capaldi On Doctor Who? “Not Yet”

Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Do you listen to Chris Evans’ breakfast radio show? No, me neither – but maybe I should start doing so. (Maybe.) Because he’s had some great guests on – including Eighth Doctor, Paul McGann, and Sean Pertwee (son of Jon, the Third Doctor, and recent guest star of The Musketeers finale). And when Evans asked McGann if he’d worked with Peter Capaldi for Doctor Who, he, naturally, said not. Well – “Not yet“!

Now, maybe we’re looking too much into things, but what he actually said was:

“Errr, no, not yet.”

… Maybe like it’s being considered!

After his shock appearance last year in The Night of the Doctor, it seems everyone wants to see the Eighth Doctor return. He is a fantastic Doctor and McGann also reveals that, when he got the part, one of the first things he did was watch a video of Jon Pertwee in the Whomobile! This leads Sean to reminisce about when his Dad took the winged car on the road – and got pulled over by the police!

They talked extensively about Capaldi, who appeared as Cardinal Richelieu in The Musketeers, and Sean was especially impressed with him, even saying:

“He really is The Man.”

He also calls the Third Doctor “camp but manly”, which sums him up surprisingly well!

The really interesting stuff starts about 2 hours, 12 minutes in…
